Booking Shinkansen tickets means choosing a seat tier first and then choosing where to buy, whether you hold a rail pass or pay per ride.1 The system rewards travelers who match the tier to their schedule and the channel to their route.

This guide covers the full booking task for all visitors, with or without a rail pass. It explains seat tiers, operator-specific booking channels, peak timing, and platform mechanics.
There is no single nationwide Shinkansen booking site. Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu routes use SmartEX while JR East routes use JR-EAST Train Reservation (Eki-net), with JR West also offering its online reservation lookup.2341
Rail pass holders follow the same seat logic as other travelers. Seat tiers: reserved, non-reserved, and Green Car
Shinkansen seating has three booking options: 自由席 (jiyūseki, "non-reserved seat"), 指定席 (shiteiseki, "reserved seat"), and グリーン車 (gurīnsha, "Green Car, first class car").61

Non-reserved seats use designated cars only. If those cars fill, you stand or wait for a later train.6
Reserved seats name your train, car, and seat in advance. Green Car adds a wider 2 plus 2 layout and a quieter cabin, not a separate reservation system.1
Nozomi trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen run as all-reserved during designated 2026 peak periods, with no non-reserved setting (as of 2026-09; confirm current designations with JR Central or JR West).5 Green Cars on those peak Nozomi services are identified as Cars 8 to 10 and are excluded from standing use on a non-reserved ticket (as of 2026-09).5
Some JR East services including Hayabusa and Kagayaki have only reserved-seat cars year round, as does the Narita Express (as of 2026-09).6 Non-reserved tickets are not valid on those services.

How a Shinkansen fare is built
A Shinkansen ride needs two parts: a basic fare ticket plus a super (limited) express ticket, issued combined or separately.6 Reserved versus non-reserved appears on the express portion.
A pass bundles both fare parts. On Shinkansen services, a pass alone covers non-reserved cars while reserved cars need an additional reserved seat ticket slip.6
A seat with an oversized baggage area costs the same as an ordinary reserved or Green Car reserved seat, with no surcharge for the baggage space itself (as of 2026-09).7

Which tier suits which trip
Reserved seats suit groups, fixed schedules, long routes, and peak travel because the seat is guaranteed.51 Families who want to sit together should reserve rather than gamble on adjacent open seats.
Non-reserved seats suit flexible solo travel on quieter services. The ticket covers designated cars without a fixed train assignment, but seating is not guaranteed.61
Reserve when your party must sit together or your date falls in a holiday peak. Use non-reserved only when you can accept standing or waiting for the next train.
Green Car suits travelers seeking wider seats and a quieter cabin. It is a comfort upgrade worth considering on long rides, not a requirement for a comfortable trip.1
How to book: online, app, and station channels
Online booking has shifted toward app and website reservation with QR or IC-linked ticketless boarding. Channel coverage keeps changing, so confirm the current scope on the operator page before your trip.
Standard reserved seats go on sale from 10:00 AM one month before departure, using the same day of the previous month (as of 2026-09; confirm current windows with the relevant JR operator).5 With SmartEX online reservation, some products open earlier, from 5:30 AM one year before boarding with limited seat counts and train number finalization after 8:00 AM one month before departure (as of 2026-09).5

Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu routes
SmartEX covers Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen reservation and purchase with a smartphone and credit card, usable from inside or outside Japan.2
SmartEX requires membership registration, charges no annual or service fee, and issues a QR code ticket that can be scanned at gates without a counter visit (as of 2026-09).2 Open the reservation site, log in, and find the QR code in the ticket confirmation.
SmartEX reservations can be changed free of charge up to 4 minutes before departure, including departure or arrival station changes (as of 2026-09).2 Seat maps show availability by train.
SmartEX offers an app in listed countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand, plus a Taiwan variant, while travelers elsewhere use the browser site (as of 2026-09).2
JR East, Hokkaido, and northern routes
JR East tickets can be reserved online via JR-EAST Train Reservation (Eki-net) from Japan and abroad, or at stations after arrival.63
The JR East Shinkansen e-ticket is a ticketless service requiring Eki-net membership plus one transportation IC card per person, such as Suica, PASMO, or Welcome Suica Mobile (as of 2026-09).8 You board by tapping the linked IC card at the automatic gate and use the reserved seat.
The Eki-net top page separates pass holders from non-pass purchasers.3 Note that Japan Rail Pass seat reservations cannot be made through that particular seat reservation path, so pass holders use machines, counters, or the pass-specific online path instead (as of 2026-09).3
JR West regional and Sanyo area options
JR West points Tokaido and Sanyo ticketless users to SmartEX and separately offers station or route search reservation plus a lookup, change, and refund path labeled e5489.4
Ticket collection for JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION products is limited to major stations and travel agencies within JR West jurisdiction (as of 2026-09).5 Confirm the pickup point before you travel if your trip starts outside that area.
JR-WEST RAIL PASS products that include the Sanyo Shinkansen in their area can use Nozomi and Mizuho with an advance seat reservation, unlike the nationwide Japan Rail Pass default (as of 2026-09).5
Booking at stations: machines and counters
At stations, reserved seats are bought at JR counters, known as みどりの窓口 (midori no madoguchi, "JR staffed ticket office"), at reserved seat ticket vending machines, or at travel agencies before boarding.56
JR East reserved seat vending machines include passport reader equipped units for inbound travelers.6 Machines show English menus and issue the seat ticket on the spot.
Booking with a rail pass
With a Japan Rail Pass or JR-WEST RAIL PASS, reserved seats are obtained at reserved seat vending machines, ticket offices or travel centers, or via the pass-specific online reservation path, with pickup at machines or counters before boarding.5
Nozomi and Mizuho cannot be used on the nationwide Japan Rail Pass alone. Pass holders must additionally purchase a Nozomi Mizuho Ticket, called a 特急券 (tokkyūken, "limited express ticket"), per ride before boarding (as of 2026-09).51
JNTO notes GranClass premier seats on Tohoku, Hokkaido, Hokuriku, and Joetsu lines require an additional ticket even for rail pass users.1 Check the surcharge before assuming the pass covers the top cabin.
Peak periods and reservation timing
Peak crowding concentrates around long holidays such as New Year, Golden Week, and Obon, plus cherry blossom and autumn foliage peaks.25 Non-reserved cars can fill and require standing or waiting during those windows.
Reserve ahead during peak windows. Allow extra station time for pickup queues and congested gates.5
Nozomi all-reserved operation during peaks
During designated 2026 peak periods, every Nozomi seat including normally non-reserved cars requires a reserved seat ticket (as of 2026-09; confirm current periods with JR Central or JR West).5 A reserved seat ticket must be purchased in advance to ride Nozomi in those windows.
Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho, Sakura, and Tsubame retain non-reserved seats during those periods, but those cars may be overcrowded and seating is not assured (as of 2026-09).5 Arrive early if you rely on them.
A non-reserved limited express ticket on a peak Nozomi does not grant a seat. Holders may stand on the deck of an ordinary car, excluding Green Cars, and risk being unable to board an overcrowded train (as of 2026-09).5
During all-reserved operation, a non-reserved Nozomi ticket means standing on an ordinary car deck at best. If sitting matters, book a reserved seat on another train or travel at a less crowded time.5
If a reserved train is full, operator guidance is to shift time or day to a train with vacant reserved seats rather than forcing boarding (as of 2026-09).5
What standing or waiting for the next train means
On non-reserved services, a full car means standing in the aisle or deck area of the non-reserved car, or waiting for a later train. Reserved cars cannot be occupied on a non-reserved ticket even when seats look empty.6
A missed reserved Nozomi train converts to same-day standing on a Nozomi ordinary deck or a non-reserved seat on Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho, Sakura, or Tsubame. A new reserved seat requires a new reserved express ticket (as of 2026-09).5
A non-reserved express ticket can be changed to a reserved express ticket once without a fee before boarding, paying only the price difference, at major station counters or some machines (as of 2026-09).5 Make the change before passing through the gate.
At the station and on the platform
Departure boards show the platform and car positions. Platforms carry car number and door position markings where queues form before arrival.1
At gates, passengers insert the paper ticket, tap the linked IC card, or scan the QR code, and keep reserved or special tickets ready for onboard checks.1
Finding your car and door position
Non-reserved cars are typically lower-numbered cars at one end of the train on reservable services, but exact numbers vary by service and must be checked on platform displays before boarding (as of 2026-09).6
Boarding means queuing at the marked position for the ticketed car and entering only that car class. Cutting in line is not permitted, and large bags should not block seats or aisles.6
Oversized baggage rules and last row seats
On Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, baggage with total dimensions over 160 cm requires a seat with an oversized baggage area reserved in advance, known as 特大荷物スペースつき座席 (tokudai nimotsu supēsu tsuki zaseki, "seat with an oversized baggage area") (as of 2026-09; confirm current rules with JR Central).71
Oversized means total dimensions between 161 and 250 cm. Baggage over 250 cm total or longer than 200 cm on one side cannot be brought aboard, and carry-on is limited to two pieces of 30 kg or less each (as of 2026-09).7
Baggage of 160 cm or less uses overhead racks, foot space, or deck storage with no reservation (as of 2026-09).7 Deck compartments on some services are trial no-reservation storage.
Oversized space sits behind the last row seats of designated cars and is shared among those seat holders. Non-reserved cars and some reserved cars have no such seats, and the space cannot be used without the matching reservation (as of 2026-09).7
Boarding with oversized baggage and no reservation draws a ¥1,000 fee including tax and storage where the conductor directs, or a request to rebook to another train when full (as of 2026-09).7
Reservations are made by telling station staff, selecting the option at vending machines, or choosing it online via SmartEX, JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, or JR-KYUSHU Train Reservation. Japan Rail Pass holders use the counter or Japan Rail Pass Reservation path (as of 2026-09).7
The oversized reservation rule does not apply to conventional line trains (as of 2026-09).7
Good to know
Non-reserved flexibility ends where peak demand begins
Peak Nozomi trains drop the non-reserved option entirely, so a flexible ticket strategy needs a reserved fallback. Designated 2026 peak periods run Nozomi as all-reserved, and Hikari and Kodama non-reserved cars may still be overcrowded (as of 2026-09; confirm current periods with JR Central or JR West).5
Reserve ahead rather than assuming same-day freedom. Shifting to an earlier or later train is easier than standing for two hours.
There is no single nationwide Shinkansen booking site
Opening the wrong JR booking site wastes time because coverage splits by operator. SmartEX serves Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu routes while Eki-net serves JR East routes, with e5489 lookup for JR West products (as of 2026-09).2341
JNTO lists purchase links per JR company rather than one portal.1 Start from the operator that runs your route.
Some Shinkansen services have no non-reserved cars at all
Assuming every Shinkansen has a non-reserved car leads to a forced reservation or a missed train. Hayabusa, Kagayaki, and similar services run reserved seating only year round, so non-reserved tickets are not valid on them.6
Check the service type before buying. If your route uses one of these services, reserve from the start.
A missed reserved train does not always mean a lost ticket, but the seat is gone
Missing a reserved train converts the ticket to standing or non-reserved same-day travel, not a new seat. Missed Nozomi reservations allow same-day deck standing or non-reserved travel on other service types, while sitting again requires a new reserved express ticket (as of 2026-09).5
JNTO notes missed-train handling varies by ticket type and advises consulting JR staff.1 Ask before boarding the next train.
Oversized baggage without a reservation can cost a fee and a forced move
Large suitcases over 160 cm total dimensions need the matching seat reservation or they draw a fee and directed storage. Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi-Kyushu rules require advance reservation of the baggage area seat at no extra seat cost, with a ¥1,000 fee and conductor-directed storage for non-compliant boarding (as of 2026-09).7
Reserve the baggage seat when you book. Without it, you cannot use the oversized space even when it looks empty.
