Narita and Haneda: Tokyo Airport-to-City Transfer Options

Narita to Tokyo takes planning because Narita sits far outside the city, while Haneda sits close enough that the transfer is short and cheap.12

Pick by airport plus hotel district, luggage load, and arrival time. The matrices below give dated fares and times so you can match your case to a row.

Confirm current details with official sources

Fees, rules, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA) and Tokyo International Air Terminal (TIAT) operator sites.

Overview

Narita and Haneda serve the same city with very different first legs. Narita needs an express train or a bus plan, while Haneda often needs only a short rail ride plus one transfer.12

How far each airport sits from central Tokyo

Narita Airport connects by the Narita Sky Access line, Keisei line, and JR line, with the Narita Express reaching Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yokohama, and Ofuna.13

The fastest Narita Express run from Narita Airport Station to Tokyo Station takes 53 minutes with no transfer to major stations (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current timetables with JR East).3

Haneda Airport connects directly to the Keikyu Line and the Tokyo Monorail Line.2 Official Haneda estimates put Shinagawa at about 15 minutes, Hamamatsucho at about 20 minutes, and Tokyo Station at about 30 minutes (as of 2026-09-04).2

Keikyu publishes 11 minutes from Terminal 3 to Shinagawa, 20 minutes to Tokyo Station, 23 minutes to Shibuya, and 30 minutes to Shinjuku, with about 3 minutes added from Terminals 1 and 2 (as of 2026-09-04).4

How to pick from this article

Narita frames access by rail, bus, car, parking, taxi, and inter-terminal shuttle, while Haneda frames it by train, monorail, bus, taxi, and terminal transfers.12

Use the decision below, then read only the section for your airport. Hotel district matters more than raw speed once you are in the city.

Narita Airport Transfer Options

Narita rewards a direct express or a one-seat bus. Commuter rail saves money but adds time and crowding.

Narita Express (NEX) to Tokyo, Shinjuku, and Shibuya

The Narita Express is a JR East limited express linking Narita Airport with Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Yokohama.3

Cars carry luggage space and power outlets, with Ordinary and Green first-class seating on reserved seats (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current rolling stock with JR East).35

Luggage spaces need no reservation and work first come, first served. Oversized items may not fit, and full racks mean bags stay at your feet.3

One-way Ordinary fares are ¥3,140 to Tokyo and ¥3,330 to Shinagawa, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, with the same price all year (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with JR East).5

Yokohama costs ¥4,480 Ordinary and Ofuna costs ¥4,810 Ordinary (as of 2026-09-04).5

Save with a round trip if you return to Narita

The NEX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket costs ¥5,200 for round-trip use within 14 days, which beats two singles for Tokyo-area returns (as of 2026-09-04).35 Pickup is only at Narita Airport Terminal 1 or Terminal 2/3 stations.3

NEX boarding uses a base fare ticket plus an express ticket, or an IC card such as Suica plus an express ticket.5

Keisei Skyliner to Nippori and Ueno

The スカイライナー (Sukairainā, "Skyliner, Keisei reserved-seat airport express") runs between Narita Airport and Ueno with non-stop Nippori service for JR connections.6

Trains run three times per hour at up to 160 km/h excluding the bullet train, and each car holds dedicated luggage space with security cameras.6

The fare for Keisei-Ueno and Nippori to the airport is ¥1,267 base by IC or ¥1,280 by magnetic ticket plus a ¥1,300 Skyliner surcharge, so ¥2,567 by IC or ¥2,580 by paper for adults (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with Keisei).7

Boarding without a Skyliner ticket adds ¥300 for adults or ¥150 for children to the express fee (as of 2026-09-04).7

Buy the Skyliner ticket before you board

All Skyliner seats are reserved, and the surcharge applies on top of the base fare.7 Keisei also sells e-ticket and subway combo sets on its official pages.7

Narita Airport Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Nippori, and Keisei Ueno are the core stops, with some trains also calling at Shin-Kamagaya and Aoto.1

Budget rail: Keisei Access Express and JR Sobu Rapid

The Keisei Access Express needs no limited-express fare and links the airport directly with the Shinagawa, Shimbashi, and Nihombashi corridor.10

The Keisei Main Line Rapid Limited Express and Limited Express also need no limited-express fare and run via Funabashi with wider connections.10

JR lines from the airport terminals reach Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Yokohama, and other major stations for commuter fares.1

These trains suit light luggage and off-peak arrivals. Expect standing room and no dedicated luggage racks during rush hours, so check the operator fare search with Transit Apps and Route Planning for Japan for your date.

Limousine buses and low-cost airport buses from Narita

Direct buses link Narita Airport with many destinations, and tickets are sold at airport counters.11

The Airport Limousine Bus from Terminals 3, 2, and 1 to Tokyo City Air Terminal and Tokyo Station Yaesu North Gate costs ¥3,100 adult and ¥1,550 child (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with Airport Transport Service).8

Timetables publish about two months ahead, and operators and times can change outside the booking window (as of 2026-09-04).8

Airport Bus TYO-NRT runs Tokyo Station to Narita Airport with a fastest time of 65 minutes and a ¥1,500 daytime one-way fare, excluding late-night and early-morning runs (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with TYO-NRT).9

Road conditions lengthen rides, so allow buffer on arrival day (as of 2026-09-04).9

Buses store luggage in the hold

Buses are not low-floor non-step vehicles, but folding wheelchairs ride in the luggage compartment and staff handle large bags.8 Motorized wheelchairs need advance inquiry.8

Taxis and pre-booked transfers from Narita

Fixed-fare taxis at Narita charge by Tokyo zone plus expressway tolls, with no advance booking needed and free choice of vehicle.12

Central zones via Keiyo Road cost ¥29,000 for Zone C covering Chuo, Chiyoda, Taito, Bunkyo, and Arakawa, and ¥31,500 for Zone D covering Shinjuku, Shibuya, Nakano, and nearby wards, plus tolls (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with NAA).12

Outer zones via Keiyo Road run ¥23,500 for Zone A, ¥28,000 for Zone B, ¥34,000 for Zone E, and ¥35,500 for Zone F, plus tolls (as of 2026-09-04).12

Bayshore Freeway routings cost more at ¥26,500 to ¥38,500 by zone plus tolls (as of 2026-09-04).12

Tolls and night surcharges sit on top of the fixed fare

Late-night and early-morning surcharges apply from 22:00 to 5:00, Aqua-Line routing adds a charge, and non-expressway trips switch to the meter.12 Taxi stands are No. 15 at Terminal 1, No. 28 and No. 31-A at Terminal 2, and the marked stand at Terminal 3.12

Haneda Airport Transfer Options

Haneda transfers are short, so the choice turns on your hotel station and luggage rather than raw speed.

Keikyu Airport Line to Shinagawa and Asakusa

Keikyu runs through to the Toei Asakusa Line, so riders select a Toei Line or JR transfer ticket at the machine for Tokyo-area trips.4

IC-only rides calculate in 1-yen units when one card enters and exits, while mixed ticket and over-ride cases calculate in 10-yen units.4

Contactless tap-to-ride cards and phones from Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners, Discover, and UnionPay work at gates.16 Child fares do not apply to tap rides, Toei transfer discounts do not apply, and substitute transport during disruptions is excluded.16

Through trains reach Shimbashi, Higashi-Ginza, Asakusa, and Oshiage without a transfer on the right service (as of 2026-09-04).4 Check the destination board, since not every train continues past Shinagawa.

For schedules and exact fares, TIAT points riders to Keikyu official channels.2

Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho and the Yamanote loop

The Monorail from Haneda terminals to Monorail Hamamatsucho costs ¥519 by IC or ¥520 by paper for adults (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with Tokyo Monorail).13

The Monorail and Yamanote Line Discount Ticket costs ¥590 adult and ¥290 child for one-way travel from Haneda through Hamamatsucho to any Yamanote Line station (as of 2026-09-04).17

It is sold only on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays from 2026-03-14 to 2027-03-31 plus listed peak windows, valid only on the purchase date at Haneda station machines (as of 2026-09-04).17

Suica works as stored value deducted at the gate after advance charging.18 A ¥500 deposit applies and is refunded on return.18

TIAT estimates about 20 minutes Haneda to Hamamatsucho and about 30 minutes onward to Tokyo Station by rail routing (as of 2026-09-04).2

Limousine buses from Haneda

Haneda buses reach Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and wider Kanto.14 Tickets come from machines at Terminals 1 and 2 and from machines or counters at Terminal 3.14

Haneda to Tokyo Station Yaesu North Gate costs ¥1,200 adult and ¥600 child (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with Airport Transport Service).15

The operator table puts Haneda to Tokyo Station at about 35 minutes, though traffic shifts the real ride (as of 2026-09-04).14

Late-night and early-morning buses cover Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Yokohama YCAT, and Sakuragicho with flight-dependent times (as of 2026-09-04).14

Taxis and pre-booked transfers from Haneda

Taxi stands sit on the first floors of Terminals 1 and 2 and via the second-floor hall to the first-floor lanes at Terminal 3.19

App-dispatched and reserved taxis use separate stands, including near Exit 7 on the Terminal 1 second floor and near Exit 2 on the Terminal 2 second floor.19

Haneda flat-rate taxis run between the airport, central Tokyo, and Kanagawa under fares approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.19 Tolls sit on top, and some areas still use the meter.19

TIAT points riders to the Tokyo and Kanagawa taxi associations for exact ward fares, so confirm your zone before you ride.19

IC Cards and Luggage Forwarding

An IC card plus the right ticket covers almost every airport leg. Heavy bags can skip transit entirely through forwarding.

Which airport services accept an IC card

NEX accepts Suica plus a separate express ticket as an alternative to paper base fare plus express ticket.5

Skyliner base fares split by payment at ¥1,267 by IC versus ¥1,280 by magnetic ticket, but the ¥1,300 surcharge still applies either way (as of 2026-09-04).7

The Monorail Haneda to Hamamatsucho leg costs ¥519 by IC versus ¥520 by paper (as of 2026-09-04).13

Keikyu calculates IC-only rides in 1-yen units and also accepts contactless bank cards and phones at gates within the limits above.416

The 交通系ICカード (kōtsūkei IC kādo, "rechargeable transportation IC card") needs charging before the gate, with Monorail Suica deducting stored value on touch.18

Sending heavy bags ahead with takkyubin

宅急便 (takkyūbin, "door-to-door parcel delivery service") sends suitcases and bulky bags to the airport or from the airport to a home or hotel.20 Parcels over 30 kg are not accepted.20

Airport handling of ¥660 sits inside the listed Yamato rate, charged one way per parcel with tax included (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with Yamato).20

Drop bags by the deadline two days before departure, or three days in some areas. Yamato delivers to major airports by the day before departure, and you collect at the airport counter with the sender receipt.20

Coverage carries insurance up to ¥300,000 tax included per parcel.20

JAL ABC runs hands-free counters at Narita Terminals 1 and 2 and Haneda Terminals 2 and 3, with airport, hotel, and storage services.21

Good to know

Narita Terminal 3 means a walk to the trains

Narita Terminal 3 has no station of its own. Terminal 1 sits 5 minutes on foot from Narita Airport Station, while Terminals 2 and 3 share Terminal 2/3 Station at 5 and 10 minutes on foot respectively.1

Budget the walk plus the transfer if you land on a low-cost carrier. Buses and taxis do serve Terminal 3 directly, which can beat the walk with heavy bags.11

Late arrivals can outlast the last train

Overnight Haneda buses cover Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Yokohama, and Sakuragicho with flight-dependent times (as of 2026-09-04).14

Narita publishes its own night and early-morning terminal use guidance.22 Check the live operator timetable for your date rather than trusting a static last-train minute.

Bus times are estimates, not promises

TYO-NRT lists 65 minutes fastest but warns that road conditions lengthen rides (as of 2026-09-04).9 Limousine departures show roughly 80 to 100 minutes Narita to Tokyo Station across the day (as of 2026-09-04).8

Build buffer into arrival-day hotel check-ins and onward Shinkansen bookings. Trains hold their times better than any road option in peak hours.

A rail pass does not cover every airport leg

JR passes load onto NEX through discount passes such as the NEX round trip, JR East Pass, and Tokyo Wide Pass.35 Keisei, Keikyu, and bus pages list their own tickets with no JR pass coverage.10423

Activating a multi-day pass only for one short airport ride burns a pass day. Buy the single airport ticket and start the pass when intercity travel begins; see Is the JR Pass Still Worth It? The Post-2023 Price-Hike Math for the break-even method.
