Power Adapters and Voltage in Japan: What Visitors Actually Need

What Plug Shape Japan Uses
Japanese outlets resemble North American ones, most commonly non-polarized and ungrounded with two pins.2 The standard form is Type A, two straight flat prongs, very similar to a standard US two-prong plug.3 Grounded forms exist with three pins or two pins plus a ground wire.2
A 変換プラグ (henkan puragu, "conversion plug adapter") changes plug shape only.1 A 変圧器 (hen'atsuki, "voltage transformer") is the separate device that changes voltage for foreign appliances on 100V.1
Visitors from North America
Your two-prong plug often fits a Japanese socket directly, and some North American equipment works in Japan without an adapter and vice versa.23 That fit covers shape only, so still check the voltage label before you assume everything runs the same.
Three-prong plugs are the exception. A Type B plug with a round grounding pin below the two flat pins will not fit a standard two-pin Japanese socket without an adapter.23 Pack a small 3-to-2 adapter or plan to charge that device through a grounded outlet where one exists.
Even with matching Type A plugs, prong-length differences mean fit is not guaranteed in every socket, so travelers from a Type A country may still want one or two adapters.3
Visitors from Europe, the UK, Australia, and elsewhere
If your home country does not use Type A plugs, bring an adapter for every device you intend to plug in.3 Most of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand run around 230V to 240V, far above Japan at 100V.3 The adapter solves the shape problem, and the voltage label decides whether anything else is needed.
Buy adapters before leaving home so devices work the moment you arrive. Shops selling travel goods and most electrical stores in Japan stock them, but arriving prepared beats hunting for one while jet-lagged.3
Voltage in Japan: 100V and What It Means
Japan runs on 100V, lower than North America at about 120V and far below Europe and Australia at 230V to 240V.3 The voltage is uniform nationwide, and although 200V exists for some fixed appliances, the traveler supply is basically 100V.14
Note that 100V and 200V sockets differ in shape, so a 200V appliance does not fit the standard traveler outlet.4 You will only meet the 100V socket in hotels and rentals.
How to read your charger label
Look for the input range printed on the brick or underside. Many phone and laptop chargers are made to operate across 100V to 240V, and those common chargers need only the correct plug shape in Japan.3

If voltage is incompatible, the device may simply run below full capacity rather than being broken. That shortfall shows most clearly in heating-element electronics.3 For North American devices, where home voltage is close to Japan, a converter may not be necessary, though checking device guidance remains advisable.3
High-wattage devices that need a second thought
Heat is where voltage matters. Equipment involving heating, for example hair dryers, may not work properly or may be damaged on the wrong voltage.2 The check-worthy category includes hair dryers, curling irons, travel irons, and shavers.123
JNTO limits its should-work statement to dual-voltage hair dryers, travel irons, and shavers, and says other cases may need a step-down transformer.1 If your dryer or straightener is single-voltage, leave it home and use the accommodation dryer or buy a Japan-market model.
Travelers who intend to buy appliances in Japan for use outside Japan should look for equipment made for overseas tourists.2 Japan-only models assume 100V and will not suit a 230V home without conversion.

The 50Hz/60Hz East/West Split, Briefly
Eastern Japan runs 50Hz and western Japan runs 60Hz, with Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka on the 60Hz side.1 The boundary follows the Fujigawa River in Shizuoka Prefecture and Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, 50Hz east and 60Hz west.4

What it means for your devices
Eastern Japan at 50Hz includes Tokyo, Yokohama, Tohoku, and Hokkaido. Western Japan at 60Hz includes Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Shikoku, and Kyushu.2 Most visitor electronics ignore the difference entirely.
Most equipment is not affected by the frequency difference, with timing devices such as some clocks as a stated possible exception.2 Frequency is the least likely of the three factors to cause difficulty, and most items operate across frequencies.3
Utility guidance groups cross-frequency behavior this way: televisions and radios work in either area, refrigerators and fans work but less efficiently, and washing machines and microwaves may not work in the other area.4 Those groupings are general examples with exceptions, so check the operating manual or consult the manufacturer for any appliance you plan to move.4 You do not need a different adapter when you ride from Tokyo to Kyoto, since the plug and voltage are the same on both sides of the line.14

A minimal charging kit
One or two Type A adapters cover most kits, since fit is not guaranteed in every socket even for matching plugs.3 Add a compact multi-port USB charger so phones, cameras, and earbuds share one outlet.
