Japan attractions requiring advance booking now include Mount Fuji trail entries, reservation-only museums and parks, and capacity-capped nature zones where showing up without action risks refusal.1 This checklist tells you exactly what to do before departure or the day before, how far ahead to act, and which official channel to use.

The Advance-Booking Checklist
If you only scan one section, scan this table. It answers the underlying worry directly: will I get turned away.

All release times run on Japan Standard Time. Convert the hour before you set an alarm abroad.1 Before you pay, check deposit, cancellation, refund, change-deadline, and late-arrival terms.1
Mount Fuji: Trail Entry, E-Learning, and Hut Reservations
Which side you climb sets your booking system. Yamanashi controls the Yoshida Trail through a gate, a daily cap, and a night closure window. Shizuoka controls the Fujinomiya, Gotemba, and Subashiri trails through pre-learning plus a QR entry pass.23
Both sides target overnight 弾丸登山 (dangan tozan, "bullet climb, overnight ascent without hut stay") without a hut stay, which drives summit congestion and raises altitude sickness risk.4 This section covers procedure only.
Yoshida Trail entry reservation
The 2026 Yoshida season runs July 1 to September 10, with possible delay for weather or snow (as of 2026-04-17; confirm current figures with the Official Website for Mt. Fuji Climbing).2 Summit access is not permitted until June 30 on a tentative basis (as of 2026-04-17).2
The 5th station gate closes from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next day (as of 2026-04-17).2 No summit-bound entry is allowed during closure, but descent is allowed anytime (as of 2026-04-17).2 The daily cap is 4,000 climbers, and unreserved arrivals are refused once it is reached, excluding hut guests who may still pass (as of 2026-04-17).2
The reservation is passage only, not a hut booking.2 Reservations with advance payment can be made until climb day and close at the daily limit.2 Even with a paid reservation, you cannot pass after 2 p.m. unless you are staying in a hut.2
The hiking fee is 4,000 yen per person per visit beyond the gate (as of 2026-04-17).2 Fifth station sightseeing and Ochudo strolling outside the gate carry no fee (as of 2026-04-17).2 Cancellation fees apply from two days after the payment date, personal cancellations including transit delays are non-refundable, and prefecture-attributable closures trigger automatic refund (as of 2026-04-17).2
The gate check covers cold-weather clothing, separate top and bottom rain gear, and climbing footwear, plus trail, trash, lava and plant, graffiti, rockfall, volcano, and ranger-instruction terms.2 Same-day registration tickets are held back, so come early without a reservation and expect weekends to be tightest.4 The cap has never yet closed the gate during permitted hours, with zero days at the limit in 2024 and 2025 (as of 2026).4
The night window is enforced at the gate.2 If your plan needs night entry, the hut reservation is the entry ticket, not an optional comfort.
Shizuoka trails pre-registration and e-learning
Shizuoka trails open on different dates. Subashiri opens July 1 at 9 a.m. while Fujinomiya and Gotemba open July 10 at 9 a.m., all closing September 10 at 5 p.m. (as of 2026-04-27; confirm current figures with the Official Website for Mt. Fuji Climbing).3
All Shizuoka-side entrants must pre-register in the FUJI NAVI app and obtain a QR hiking permit for each trailhead.3 Pre-registration opens May 8, 2026, the pass expires at 23:59 on entry day, and date or trail changes must be updated before entry day (as of 2026-04-27).3
Pre-learning means completing video or text e-learning and passing the Mt. Fuji test with all answers correct before the permit is issued.3 Night entry from 2 p.m. to 3 a.m. requires a hut stay verified at on-site authentication, and the app does not book huts.3
The hiking fee is 4,000 yen per person, payable by card or e-money, with full refund until entry day and no cancellation after on-site authentication (as of 2026-04-27).3 Shizuoka sets no daily climber limit (as of 2026-04-27).3
Climbers without smartphones can finish learning, paperwork, and payment on site in about 30 minutes, but peak queues extend the wait.3 Exempt routes are the Gotemba Futagoyama course, the Subashiri Kofuji course, and Komitake Shrine visits, while the Fujinomiya Hoei Crater course is covered.4
Mountain hut reservations on all trails
Hut accommodation and trail entry are separate processes on both sides.4 Paying the hiking fee does not book a bed, and a hut bed does not pay the fee. Confirm both.
Hut guests show the reservation confirmation email printed or as an offline screenshot to pass during restrictions.4 The ticket date is the gate-passing day at the 5th station gate, or the 6th station reception day for from-below climbs, not the sunrise day.4
The best hut booking time varies by hut, so check each hut directly.4 The crowded core is late July to late August, especially weekends and holidays, and officials ask visitors to spread into weekdays (as of 2026).4 In peak weeks, lock the hut before the trail entry. A 山小屋 (yamagoya, "mountain hut") stay on 富士山 (Fuji-san, "Mount Fuji") is basic shared lodging, not a hotel room.
Timed-Entry Attractions That Sell Out

teamLab Planets and Borderless timed slots
teamLab Planets runs July 7, 2018 through the end of 2027 (as of 2026-09).7 Entry uses timed slots sold through the official ticket store, with December dates released in late September in the current pattern (as of 2026-09).7
JNTO names teamLab Borderless as a typical popular attraction that requires reservations.1 Many attractions use scheduled slots to stagger arrivals while generally leaving visit length unrestricted.1 A チームラボ venue rewards early booking and loose scheduling around the slot.
Ghibli Park reservation-only entry
Advance reservations are required on weekdays, weekends, and holidays with no exceptions.5 No tickets are sold at any park area gate.5 This is an Aichi operator rule, not a nationwide museum rule.
O-Sanpo passes go on sale two months ahead on the 10th at 2 p.m. Japan time (as of 2026-09).5 November 2026 tickets went on sale September 10, 2026 at 2 p.m. (as of 2026-09).5 Child tickets for ages 4 to 12 are half the adult figures, age 0 to 3 enters free and is not counted (as of 2026-09).5
Each ticket type is limited to once per person per month with a maximum of six tickets per order (as of 2026-09).5 Parties of 7 or more split into small groups of 6 or less (as of 2026-09).5 Only the Grand Warehouse has an assigned entry time; other areas admit until 4:30 p.m. and queue when waiting.5
Ghibli Museum and other dated-ticket venues
All Ghibli Museum admission is by advance reservation only.6 No reservation or purchase is available at the museum.6 This is a Mitaka operator rule for that museum only.
Overseas Lawson Ticket sales open at 10 a.m. Japan time on the 10th each month for the following month (as of 2026).6 Tickets are valid only for the specified date and entry time, with no set exit time.6
JNTO lists Saihoji in Kyoto as a reservation-required temple example alongside premium festival seating, castle sections, priority passes, and special exhibits.1 Some services require confirmation 24 to 48 hours before the booking, so watch email and SMS.1
Shirakawa-go winter light-up event controls
The 41st light-up runs on only 4 dates: January 11 (Monday holiday), 17, 24, and 31, 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30 (as of 2026-09-02; confirm current dates with the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).8 This is a Shirakawa Village rule for this event only.
The event is strictly advance-reservation only with an admission ticket system (as of 2026-09-02).8 No tickets are sold on the day, and arrivals without a reservation are turned away (as of 2026-09-02).8 An entrance gate operates from 15:30, daytime visitors without tickets cannot remain, and regular-bus arrivals after 15:20 cannot enter that evening (as of 2026-09-02).8
Admission tickets are neck-holder passes color-coded by date and valid only on the indicated date.8 The ticket covers the illuminated village walk, not the observation deck.8 A 白川郷ライトアップ (Shirakawa-go raito-appu, "winter illumination event in Shirakawa-go village") evening only works when ticket, transport, and return plan share the same date.
Private-vehicle participation requires a Midashima Parking Lot reservation for regular vehicles only, maximum 10 people per vehicle, entry from 15:00 and exit by 20:00 (as of 2026-09-02).8 Round 1 sales start September 10, 2026 at 1 p.m. Japan time at 6,000 yen for 1 to 5 people and 9,000 yen for 6 to 10 people (as of 2026-09-02).8 Round 2 sales start December 1, 2026 at 1 p.m. at 7,000 yen and 10,000 yen, with a 4,000 yen day-of upgrade for extra headcount (as of 2026-09-02).8
Observation deck access requires a separate deck ticket via an overnight stay in Shirakawa Village on the event day under a deck-included plan or via a participating bus-operator tour (as of 2026-09-02).8 Participating operators are Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway Bus, Hokuriku Railway Bus, and Iruka Kotsu.8
Overnight stays are allocated by lottery with applications from October 1, 2026 at 1 p.m. to October 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Japan time (as of 2026-09-02).8 Bus tour sales are staggered per event date in mid-October to early November at 2 p.m. (as of 2026-09-02).8
Capacity-Capped Natural Areas
Ecology-driven limits protect habitat and safety, not comfort. Each system below is set for its own road, trail, or marsh, so a rule at one park says nothing about the next park; for the ecology background, see Permit and Reservation Systems in Japan's Protected Natural Areas.

Shiretoko Five Lakes ground pathways
From May 10 to July 31, ground pathways allow only registered-guide tours (as of 2026-09-04; confirm current figures with the Shiretoko Goko Lakes site).9 Tours leave at 10 minute intervals with a maximum of 10 participants, guides carry radios reporting bear activity, and tours may cancel when bears appear.9
Advance long-loop tours run from 6,000 yen for adults 12 and older and from 3,000 yen for children 6 to 11, take about 3 hours, and vary by guide company (as of 2026-09-04).9 Advance short-loop tours cost 4,000 yen for adults and 2,500 yen for children 6 to 11 and take about 1 hour 45 minutes (as of 2026-09-04).9 Same-day places cost more and exist only when advance bookings leave seats, with registration from 8:00 a.m. by phone or Field House (as of 2026-09-04).9
In eco seasons from opening to May 9 and August 1 to closing, visitors walk independently after a 10 minute lecture (as of 2026-09-04).9 Entry is capped at 50 visitors at 10 minute intervals, and lecture reservations run from 10 days to 30 minutes before (as of 2026-09-04).9
Lecture admission is bought at the Field House vending machine (as of 2026-09-04).9 The elevated wooden path needs no procedure and carries no charge.9 The ヒグマ (higuma, "brown bear") is the safety reason behind the seasonal split.
Ground pathways close and tours cancel at short notice when bears appear, even with a valid slot (as of 2026-09-04).9 Build a fallback around the free elevated wooden path.
Yakushima Arakawa trail shuttle and contribution
From March 1 to November 30, the Arakawa route is regulated around the clock from the gate to the trail entrance (as of 2026-03-10; confirm current figures with Yakushima Town).10 Climbers starting at the Arakawa entrance must ride the Arakawa Mountain Bus, while chartered buses and taxis may still pass.10 This is a Yakushima Town rule for that road only.
The official fare is 700 yen one way and 1,400 yen round trip for junior high and older (as of 2026-03-10).10 Elementary fares are 350 yen one way and 700 yen round trip (as of 2026-03-10).10 Buy tickets before boarding at the Yakusugi Museum office, Miyanoura, airport, and Anbo info centers, the Environmental and Cultural Village Center, or listed partner lodgings.10
The shuttle has no seat-reservation system, runs to a published timetable with reduced service in June and November, and may suspend for road or weather.10 Buyers are asked to cooperate with the 山岳部環境保全協力金 (sangakubu kankyo hozen kyoryokin, "mountain conservation contribution") when buying the ticket.10 All climbers are also asked to file a climbing notification, with search costs on the climber.10
Oze marshes and lodge reservations
Oze is normally open from mid-May to late October (as of 2026; confirm current dates with the Oze Preservation Foundation).11 Skunk cabbage peaks in late May to early June, daylilies carpet the marsh in late July, and autumn color arrives in early October (as of 2026).11
Oze has 22 lodges under a capped reservation system dating to 1992, so reserve the lodge stay ahead.12 Dinner sittings start around 17:30 with shared rooms as the norm.12 Mt. Shibutsu closes in May and June for plant recovery, with its east-slope trail ascent only (as of 2026).11
Boardwalk duties are stable: do not step off boards onto marshes, place tripods on marshes, or sit with feet on the marsh; keep right and give ascending hikers priority; do not smoke while walking.12 There are no bathrooms on Mt. Shibutsu and Mt. Hiuchigatake, so bring portable facilities from trailhead shops.12
How to Book Without Getting Turned Away
Run the same checks for every stop, since no two venues share a channel. Good to know
A trail entry ticket is not a hut bed
Trail entry and hut stay are separate purchases on both Fuji sides.4 Confirming only one leaves you blocked at the night gate or without a roof. Hut guests pass restrictions by showing hut confirmation, but the hiking fee is still due where the pass booking requires advance payment.24
The same separation trips up Shizuoka climbers who finish FUJI NAVI but skip the hut call. The app explicitly does not book huts, so reserve directly with the hut.3
Release times run on Japan Standard Time
Ghibli Park at 2 p.m., Ghibli Museum at 10 a.m., Shirakawa-go parking at 1 p.m., and bus tours at 2 p.m. are all Japan Standard Time.568 An overseas alarm set to local time misses the window by hours. Convert once, then book.
Daylight saving does not exist in Japan, so the offset stays fixed through the season. Recheck the official page before each release, since sale dates can shift.51
Same-day slots are a gamble, not a plan
Yoshida holds some same-day tickets, but weekends and the 2 p.m. gate can still refuse you.4 Shiretoko same-day places exist only from leftover capacity.9 Shirakawa-go sells nothing on the day and turns away unreserved arrivals.8
Use same-day only as a fallback for a flexible weekday. For peak weekends, Obon, and event dates, treat advance booking as mandatory. Late July to late August is the crowded core on Fuji, with Obon at the peak (as of 2026).4
A venue rule covers only that venue
Yamanashi cap and Shizuoka e-learning rules cover only their own Fuji trails.23 Shirakawa Village controls cover only that event.8 teamLab and Ghibli terms are per-operator policies.57 None of them generalizes to Japan as a whole.
Read each source at the scope it covers. A single temple pre-registration rule or one museum lottery does not describe temples or museums generally.1
