Setting Up Your eSIM Before You Land: A Pre-Departure Checklist
Setting up your Japan eSIM before departure means installing the profile on home WiFi and holding activation until you land.12 Get the order wrong and you either debug a failed install with no internet at the airport or burn days of a short plan before the trip starts.

This checklist serves travelers who already chose the eSIM route. It covers the full pre-departure sequence: confirm compatibility, buy without starting the clock, install on home WiFi, activate on landing, and fix the two failures that strand people most often.
Install and activate are different actions. Installing downloads the profile to your phone. Activating starts the plan clock. Before You Buy: Compatibility and Plan Timing
Buying the wrong plan for the wrong phone is the failure you cannot fix at the airport. Two checks at home prevent it.
Confirm the phone is eSIM capable and unlocked
Your phone must be both eSIM capable and carrier unlocked. A handset locked to a home carrier may refuse to accept a travel eSIM at all, so confirm the unlock with your home carrier before you pay.81
Apple supports eSIM on iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, and later models.4 On a Pixel 3a or later you can use one physical SIM plus one eSIM, and on a Pixel 7 or later you can use two eSIM profiles at once where the carrier allows it.6 One fast self-check before buying: dial *#06# and look for an EID code, which confirms the device has eSIM hardware.9
Confirm the unlock with your home carrier before you pay. Provider install checklists require the device to be network unlocked, and support teams treat a locked device as the first suspect when nothing connects.1
Buy the plan without starting the clock
Read the Activation Policy under Additional Information before you pay (as of 2026-09; confirm current plan terms with your provider). Most plans start on first network connection, but a few start at installation, and that difference decides how early you may safely install.2

Install the Profile on Home WiFi
Installation downloads the profile, so it needs stable internet. Home WiFi is the right place. Airport WiFi can carry an install in principle.10 But it is a poor venue for discovering a locked phone or a missing confirmation code for the first time.18

iPhone install path
Apple lists QR code setup as a supported path. Open the Camera app and scan the carrier QR code. Tap the Cellular Plan Detected notification, tap Continue, tap Add Cellular Plan, and enter the carrier confirmation code if asked.4
The Airalo in-app path follows the same logic. Go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, then Add eSIM, then Use QR code, and scan the code shown in the app. Enter the confirmation code if one is provided, wait for activation to finish, and tap Done.1
Give the new line a unique label such as Japan so it is easy to identify among multiple lines.111 If the app asks whether you are already at your destination, choose Connect Later while still at home.1
Android install path
On a Pixel, open Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, then Add SIM, then Set up an eSIM. Choose the provider of your eSIM, complete the setup, then set your SIM preferences for calls, texts, and data.6
Ubigi offers Android installation both by QR code and through the Ubigi app, so follow whichever path your provider documents.9 Keep provider-specific steps provider attributed. Menu names shift between makers and OS versions, and the provider app shows the exact flow for your handset.1
Save the activation details offline
A phone with no connection cannot open an inbox. Save everything the setup might need before leaving WiFi.
Run this checklist before heading to the airport:
- QR code email or activation code saved where it opens offline
- APN value from the provider instructions screenshotted
- Japan line labeled and visible under the SIM settings
- Data roaming still off for the Japan line
Japan Wireless delivers the QR code by email right after purchase, flagged as arriving in about 2 minutes, and each code installs only once (as of 2026-09; confirm current reinstall rules with your provider). Deleting the installed line means it cannot be reinstalled.10
On Landing: Activate Without Burning the Plan
Activation happens at touchdown, not before. Switch the data line, then verify the connection while airport WiFi is still available as backup.
Set the Japan line as mobile data
Open Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, select the eSIM, and toggle Turn On This Line if it is disabled. Then select the eSIM as the data line.1 On a Pixel only one SIM can hold the mobile data default, chosen under Network and internet, then SIMs, then Mobile data.6
On iOS, turn Allow Cellular Data Switching off so data stays pinned to the eSIM line.1 Set data roaming on for the eSIM line exactly as the provider instructs. Keep roaming off for the home SIM to avoid home-carrier charges, noting that on Android roaming often applies to all SIMs in use, so switch the primary SIM off.11
Confirm APN only if data does not connect
Many plans configure the APN automatically and need no change. Enter values manually only when data fails to connect after the line switch.111
The iPhone path runs Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, then the eSIM, then Cellular Data Network. Enter the APN exactly as shown in the provider app and leave the other fields blank.1 On Ubigi iPhones the manual method means opening Mobile Data Network on the Ubigi profile and typing the provider value in each APN field.5
Treat the APN as conditional, not routine. When everything else looks right but pages will not load, a missing or wrong APN is the usual culprit.8
When It Does Not Work: Honest Troubleshooting
Most failures land in one of two buckets. Work them in order before assuming the plan itself is broken.
Profile installed but the phone will not switch
Installed is not connected. Installed means the profile downloaded and appears under the SIM settings. In Use means it connected to a network with an active data session, and only the connect steps get it there.1
Confirm the eSIM is on, selected for data, and uniquely labeled. Temporarily switch off other lines that may interfere, then restart the device to refresh the connection.11 On a Pixel, note that some SIM network combinations report Voice unavailable or Voice interruptions, which is a handset-side carrier issue to raise with the carrier.6
Deletion is not a reset. Provider eSIM installs are single use, so a deleted line needs a replacement profile before anything works again.10 Run line selection, roaming, APN, and restart steps first.
Plan active but no signal or no internet
Work the provider troubleshooting order. Switch airplane mode off and wait for the network search, then check the APN values.
Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. Then try manual network selection.11
For manual selection, open the eSIM Network Selection setting, turn Automatic off, and choose the network named in the provider connection instructions.111 Restart the phone if the line still will not attach, since a restart finalizes network registration on both iOS and Android.118
Weak local coverage defeats every settings fix. If nothing above helps, move location or wait before retrying rather than rewriting correct settings.11
The fallback plan if setup fails after landing
Every traveler needs a backup that does not depend on home WiFi. Narita Airport lists SIM card sales plus mobile phone and WiFi rental counters and vending machines across Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 (as of 2026-09; confirm current counter locations with the airport before relying on one). Operators include JAL ABC, SoftBank Global Rental, J WiFi and Mobile with Global WiFi, and GPA SIM vending machines.7
Typical counter windows run morning to evening, for example 07:00 to 21:00 at some counters (as of 2026-09). Late-night arrivals may find counters closed, so check the hours for your terminal before counting on a walk-up fix.7
Decide the fallback before departure, not at the arrivals hall:
- Note the rental counter location and hours for your arrival terminal
- Keep a payment method ready for a counter rental or SIM purchase
- Know whether your group shares one pocket WiFi or each phone needs its own fix
Installing at home before departure, while support channels and stable internet are still reachable, is the real safety net, and the airport counter is the second one.110

Deleting the profile destroys a single-use QR code
Provider eSIM installs are single use, so deleting the installed line removes the only copy (as of 2026-09).10 The fix path for a dead connection runs through line selection, roaming, APN, and restart. Deletion sits at the end of that list, paired with a request for a replacement profile, never at the start.
The home line is the roaming bill risk, not the eSIM
Prepaid travel eSIMs cannot bill beyond their plan, but the home SIM can. Leaving the home line as the data line or leaving its roaming on routes usage to the home carrier.11 Pin data to the Japan line, switch the home line off, and disable automatic data switching on iOS before the first train ride.1
Airport WiFi is backup, not a setup venue
