Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages

Takayama and Shirakawa-go are the classic pairing of Gifu Prefecture's Hida region: an old merchant town of preserved Edo-period townhouses and morning markets, and a World Heritage village of steep thatched-roof farmhouses.12 The scenery is the easy part; the planning work is in partly reserved buses, farmhouse rooms that are hard to book, and a winter light-up that admits reservation holders only.345

Fees, rules, and requirements can change. Confirm current details with the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Hida Takayama Tourism (Takayama City).

Overview

Takayama's old town is a former commercial center lined with traditional townhouses, many of them historically significant structures.1 Shirakawa-go's main village, Ogimachi, is about 50 minutes from Takayama by bus (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current figures with Nohi Bus).6

JNTO presents the two as a route with Kanazawa to the west, and the same bus network ties all three together.7

Three places, two prefectures

The UNESCO World Heritage property "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama" was inscribed in 1995.2 It covers three villages along the Sho River: Ogimachi in Shirakawa-go (Gifu Prefecture), and Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama (Toyama Prefecture).2 UNESCO inscribed them as traditional settlements adapted to their environment.2

Gokayama's two villages belong to Nanto City, Toyama, not to Shirakawa Village.8 That matters in practice: Shirakawa Village and its tourist association publish Shirakawa-go's visitor rules, parking fees, and light-up system, and those do not automatically apply in Gokayama or in Takayama City.9

How long to give it

JNTO (the Japan National Tourism Organization) recommends at least half a day for Shirakawa-go, or an overnight stay, and at least one to two days for Kanazawa (as of 2026-10-10).7 The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association estimates about 2–3 hours to walk around the village itself (as of 2026-10-10).12

Travel times between the stops shape how much fits in a day. The table below uses operator and tourist-association figures, which carry their own check dates.

Takayama also connects to the mountains to the east, covered in The Japanese Alps: Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Takayama: Old Town, Morning Markets, and Festivals

Sanmachi and the old town

The 三町 (Sanmachi, "the old merchant district") area is the preserved core of Takayama's old town.1 Old-town shops are typically open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 (as of 2025-02-21; confirm current hours with the individual shops).14

Sake breweries are marked by 杉玉 (sugidama, "cedar ball"), balls of cedar leaves hung at their entrances.114 Some breweries sell small tasting samples (as of 2025-02-21).14

The Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets

Takayama has two 朝市 (asaichi, "morning markets"): one along the Miyagawa riverside and one in front of Takayama Jinya.1516 Takayama City lists the same seasonal hours for both and gives no winter closure for either, so both run year-round with shorter winter hours.1516

Jinya-mae7:00–12:008:00–12:002024-07-0216

These hours come from city pages last updated in July 2024 (as of 2024-07-02).1516 The Miyagawa market stretches about 350 m between the Kaji-bashi and Yayoi-bashi bridges, with about sixty shops and stalls (as of 2024-07-01).15

Expect far fewer stalls in bad weather. Both market pages say the count drops to about 10 in rain or winter (as of 2024-07-02).1516

The Jinya-mae market started more than 300 years ago, and only farmers may operate stalls there today.16

Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village

高山陣屋 (Takayama Jin'ya, "Takayama government office") was an Edo-period local government office, in official use from 1692 to 1969.17 It is the only one left of more than 60 such offices.17

飛騨の里 (Hida no Sato, "Hida Folk Village") is an open-air museum of about 99,000 m² with over 30 structures, including thatched-roof houses.18 If Shirakawa-go does not fit your schedule, it is a way to see thatched-roof farmhouses without the bus leg to the village.

The Takayama Jinya fee is from the Gifu Prefecture operator's own page (as of 2026-10-10); Takayama City's English page, last updated 2022-08-31, still shows ¥430 (as of 2026-10-10).1917 Groups of 30 or more pay ¥450, and visitors of high-school age and younger enter free (as of 2026-10-10).19

Jinya hours are 8:45–17:00 from April 1 to October 31 (last entry 16:30) and 8:45–16:30 from November 1 to March 31 (last entry 16:00) (as of 2026-10-10).19 It closes over the year-end and New Year holidays and occasionally for weather or maintenance.19

Hida Folk Village is open all year, 8:30–17:00, and elementary and junior-high students pay ¥200 (as of 2026-10-10).18 It is about 10 minutes from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on the Sarubobo Bus, which costs ¥210 one way (as of 2026-10-10).18

The spring and autumn Takayama Festival

The Takayama Festival runs twice a year, on dates fixed by custom. It is said to have started sometime between the late 16th and 17th centuries.20

TermMeaning
山王祭 (Sannō Matsuri)The spring festival of Hie Shrine21
八幡祭 (Hachiman Matsuri)The autumn festival of Sakurayama Hachimangū22
屋台 (yatai)Festival float, in Takayama usage21
からくり (karakuri)Mechanical marionette performed on a float22
夜祭 (yomatsuri)Night festival with lantern-lit floats21

The spring festival takes place on April 14–15 at Hie Shrine, with 12 floats, three of which stage marionette shows.21 On the night of the 14th, each float carries about 100 lanterns.21

The autumn festival takes place on October 9–10 at Sakurayama Hachimangū, with a night festival on the 9th and a karakuri performance on the Hotei-tai float.22 Of its 11 floats, only 10 are currently displayed because the Gyojintai float is under repair (as of 2026-10-03).22

Rain changes the program. The procession, float display, marionette performances, and night festival are cancelled in rain, and the spring festival is not postponed.2122

Lodging is the main planning constraint. japan-guide.com reports that Takayama hotels get booked out many months in advance for festival dates and suggests Furukawa and Gero Onsen as alternatives for a festival that draws several hundred thousand people (as of 2026-09-19).23

Shirakawa-go and Gokayama: The Gassho Villages

What gassho-zukuri means

合掌造り (gasshō-zukuri, "praying-hands construction") is the steep thatched-roof farmhouse style of these villages. The name refers to the triangular shape made by hands pressed together in prayer.24

The steep roofs shed snow more easily, and the large attics were used for silkworm cultivation, sometimes divided into several levels.24 UNESCO notes that the houses evolved around mulberry cultivation and sericulture.2

Thatch was replaced every few decades in a one-day communal effort involving up to 200 villagers.24

Ogimachi and the observation deck

Walking through Ogimachi is free. Individual facilities charge about ¥300–400 per person, and the 合掌造り民家園 (Gasshō-zukuri Minkaen, "gassho-house open-air museum") charges ¥800 (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current figures with the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).2512 Each house sets its own fee, so expect some variation.

The 荻町城跡展望台 (Ogimachi Jōseki Tenbōdai, "Ogimachi Castle Ruins observation deck") overlooks the village and is reached by shuttle bus or on foot. Its parking lot has been closed to vehicles since 2023-12-28 (as of 2024-06-14).26

The shuttle leaves from in front of 和田家 (Wada-ke, "Wada House") daily from 9:00 to 15:40, every 20 minutes, with no service in the 12:00 hour (as of 2026-10-10).25 The adult fare is ¥300 one way, paid in cash when you get off, and pets are not allowed (as of 2026-10-10).2527

The Tourist Association's English FAQ still lists a ¥200 fare and 10:00–14:40 hours (as of 2026-10-10); the Japanese FAQ and the village's own page give the ¥300 figure.122527 Hakusan Taxi runs the shuttle, and it may be delayed or suspended for snow, ice, or poor visibility.27

Gokayama: Ainokura and Suganuma

Gokayama is an area of about 40 hamlets in Nanto City, Toyama, where people still live in traditional gassho houses in Ainokura and Suganuma.8 Snow builds up to 2–3 m in winter.8

Ainokura is the larger of the two, with 20 gassho houses, most of them 100–200 years old and the oldest dating to the 17th century.10 Some are still lived in; others are restaurants, museums, shops, and lodgings.10

Suganuma is smaller, with only 12 traditional buildings, 9 of them gassho style.11 Most date from the late Edo period to the Taisho era, and the oldest is now the Gokayama Folk Museum.11

Gokayama runs its own rules and events

Gokayama is in Nanto City, Toyama, not Shirakawa Village. Shirakawa Village sets Shirakawa-go's parking fees, visitor rules, and light-up reservation system; check the Gokayama Tourist Information Center or Nanto City for Gokayama's own terms.89

Ainokura holds its own light-up events. The Gokayama Tourist Information Center lists "Mado-Akari" window-light nights on October 14, 2026 and January 13 and 27, 2027 (17:00–20:00), and an Ainokura light-up on February 20–21, 2027, from sunset to 20:00 (2026–2027 season, as of 2026-04-22).28 Its page asks only buses to reserve parking; it shows no reservation requirement for individual visitors (as of 2026-04-22).28

Getting There and Between: The Bus Network

Takayama to Shirakawa-go

Buses leave from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, next to JR Takayama Station.29 The ride takes about 50 minutes and the adult fare is ¥2,800 one way (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current figures with Nohi Bus).6 Nohi has announced a rise to ¥2,900 for rides from 2026-12-01 (as of 2026-10-11).3031

Nohi Bus, Hokuriku Tetsudo (Hokutetsu), Kaetsuno Bus, Iruka Kotsu, and Toyama Chiho Tetsudo run the line jointly (as of 2026-10-10).6 It is partly reserved: Nohi's Japanese page says some departures are 予約制 (yoyakusei, "reservation-only"), and the English timetable marks those departures "R" (as of 2026-10-10).36

On the timetable shown in October 2026, 12 of 19 departures from Takayama and 12 of 18 departures from Shirakawa-go were reserved (as of 2026-10).6 The page shows no effective date, and the timetable changes seasonally, so check the current one for your travel day.6

Mobile tickets cover unreserved departures only

Nohi sells mobile tickets only for departures without the R mark. For a reserved departure, book through Japan Bus Online, the Hassha Orai Net booking site, or the Nohi Bus Reservation Center at (0577) 32-1688, open 9:00–17:00 (as of 2026-10-10).36

On weekdays, three unreserved departures also stop at Iijima and Hatogaya and reach Shirakawa-go about 67 minutes after leaving Takayama on the timetable (as of 2026-10-10).6 Trunk space is limited, and Nohi warns it may be unable to accommodate large items.6

The joint line also links Shirakawa-go with Kanazawa, Toyama, and Takaoka. The fares below are adult, one way, and change with the operator's fare schedule (as of 2026-10-10).6 The "From 2026-12-01" column gives the Nohi fares announced for rides from 2026-12-01 (as of 2026-10-11).3031

Reaching Gokayama and the Takaoka route

Kaetsuno Bus runs the World Heritage Bus from Takaoka Station via Shin-Takaoka Station and Johana Station to Gokayama (Ainokura and Suganuma) and on to Shirakawa-go.33 It is the bus route serving both Gokayama villages.

Since 2025-11-01, the bus has offered optional seat reservations for 16 designated seats per bus; other seats remain unreserved (as of 2026-10-11).3433 Reservations open one month ahead and close the day before, through Hassha Orai Net, WILLER Travel, Kosoku Bus .com, or Rakuten Travel, up to six seats per booking, and cannot be combined with free passes or multi-ride tickets (as of 2026-10-11).33

Check fares, free passes, and the current timetable on Kaetsuno's World Heritage Bus route page before planning more than one stop in a day.33

If the bus is full: tours, driving, and winter roads

Hokutetsu sells a guided sightseeing bus from Kanazawa on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays between 2026-04-01 and 2027-03-31, at ¥8,000 for adults and ¥7,000 for children (as of 2026-10-10).32 Other operators and agencies run their own tours; check their current schedules.

Which route makes sense depends on where you start and what is still available. The diagram below summarizes the options covered in this section.

If you drive, park at the village-run Seseragi Park lot across the Sho River; the village asks tourist vehicles not to enter the World Heritage area.9 The lot holds about 200 standard cars and 40 large vehicles, opens 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), and charges ¥2,000 per car, ¥10,000 per bus or microbus, and ¥500 per motorcycle (as of 2026-10-10).359 Midashima and Terao serve as temporary overflow lots (as of 2026-10-10).35

Winter driving needs preparation. The Tourist Association advises studless winter tires and highly recommends 4WD.36

Snow also affects the village itself. The observation-deck shuttle may be delayed or suspended for snow or ice, and the light-up may be cancelled if severe cold threatens transport safety (2027 event, as of 2026-07-01).275

Staying Overnight in a Gassho Farmhouse

What a farmhouse stay is like

The Tourist Association directory lists gassho farmhouse lodgings alongside ryokan and guesthouses, and several describe themselves as 民宿 (minshuku, "family-run guesthouses").37 A typical stay means tatami rooms with futons, bathrooms and toilets that are modern but shared among guests, and an 囲炉裏 (irori, "sunken hearth") in the common areas, though details vary by house (as of 2025-10-14; confirm current details with the individual inn).4

The main reason to stay is the evening. Shirakawa-go is closed to sightseeing at night, and only overnight guests get nighttime access to the village.9

The houses are small. Three listings on the Tourist Association site show 2 rooms at Kayabuki, 3 at Shimizu, and 4 at Kanjya (as of 2026-10-10).383940

Check-in and check-out times vary by house: 15:30 / 9:00 at Kayabuki, 15:00 / 9:00 at Shimizu, and 13:00 / 9:00 at Kanjya (as of 2026-10-10).383940

Booking and what it costs

The Tourist Association directory lists 41 accommodations, including gassho houses, ryokan, and guesthouses (as of 2026-10-10).37 japan-guide.com reports that farmhouse stays have become very popular and difficult to reserve (as of 2025-10-14).4

Online booking through the Tourist Association site opens about 3 months in advance (as of 2026-10-10).41 If a card payment fails, the system blocks the room for one hour (as of 2026-10-10).41

Prices vary by inn, and so does the way they are quoted. One inn states that its rates change with season, number of guests, and booking platform, and its listing does not say whether the headline price is per person or per room (as of 2026-10-10).42 Check each listing for whether a price is per person or per room and whether dinner and breakfast are included.

Each house also sets its own cancellation and payment terms. Whether a cancellation fee applies is at the facility's discretion, and at least one listed property accepts cards, smartphone payments, and IC cards (as of 2026-10-10).4137

The Winter Light-Up

Every fact in this section applies to Shirakawa Village (Ogimachi) only. Gokayama runs separate events on different dates.28

How the reservation-only system works

The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up runs on four nights: January 11 (Monday, a holiday), January 17, January 24, and January 31, 2027, each from 17:30 to 19:30 in Ogimachi (2027 event, as of 2026-07-01; confirm current details with the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).5 Visitors without a reservation will not be admitted, even if they arrive on the event day, and drones are prohibited (2027 event, as of 2026-07-01).5

No light-up tickets are sold on the day

Admission tickets will not be sold on the day of the event (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02). Turning up in Ogimachi on a light-up evening without a booking means not getting in.4344

Admission tickets are neck holders worn visibly, color-coded by date, and valid only on that date (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).4344 The observation deck needs a separate Observation Deck Ticket, available only through accommodation packages or participating bus tours; resale and transfer are prohibited, and so are tripods (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).4344

The 2026 event also ran on four nights, chosen because of a shortage of snow from warmer winters and the timing of sunset, with entry by full advance reservation (2026 event, as of 2025-07-03).45 The organizer is the Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up Committee inside the Tourist Association, at +81-5769-6-1013 (as of 2026-07-01).5

The ways in: overnight stay, parking reservation, or bus tour

For 2027 there are five ways in, each booked separately and on its own schedule (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).43 The table gives each route's booking dates as published.

The overnight-stay route is a lottery because demand outgrew first-come booking, and winning guests receive the observation-deck ticket at check-in (2027 event, as of 2026-10-01).46 Application terms are on the Tourist Association's accommodation-lottery announcement.46

The choice mostly comes down to whether you want the observation deck. This diagram follows the 2027 routes.

Taxis have no waiting area, and passengers may not get on or off on the roadway (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).43 Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway Bus, Hokuriku Railway Bus, and Iruka Kotsu sell the highway-bus tours (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).43 The parking booking site warns of heavy traffic when sales open (as of 2026-09-10).47

Daytime visits on light-up days

On light-up days the village is not simply cleared at one time. For 2027, day visitors arriving by car have a final entry time of 15:00 and must leave by 17:00, and buses have a final entry of 14:00 and must leave by 16:00 (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).4344

From 15:30 an entrance gate is set up, and visitors without an admission ticket are not let in (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).4344 Daytime sightseeing buses must depart by 16:00 on event days (2027 event, as of 2026-07-01).5

These times are published for the 2027 event. Do not assume an earlier or later year used the same schedule.

Visiting a Living Village: Resident Privacy and Local Rules

Shirakawa-go's responsible-tourism rules

Shirakawa Village says nearly 500 residents live in and maintain the gassho village (as of 2026-10-10; figure undated; confirm current figures with Shirakawa Village).9 It publishes five rules for visitors, which apply in Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi):9

  1. Parking: use the designated Seseragi Parking; tourist vehicles should not enter the World Heritage area.
  2. Fire prevention: no smoking, cigarette litter, or fireworks; smoking is allowed only at three designated areas, because thatched roofs are extremely flammable.
  3. Trash: there are no rubbish bins in the village, so take everything back out with you.
  4. Night sightseeing: the village is not open to tourists at night, to protect residents' lives and privacy.
  5. Drones: drones are prohibited in the village.

The night rule is the one most tied to residents' privacy. Overnight guests at village lodgings are the exception.9

For photography, the published restriction is the light-up organizers' tripod ban at the observation deck on light-up nights (2027 event, as of 2026-09-02).43 These rules are Shirakawa Village's; Gokayama, in Nanto City, sets its own.

Crowds, parking fees, and why they rose

The same village page cites about 1,500 residents in the wider area and 2.15 million tourist visitors, without stating the year (as of 2026-10-10).9 The weekly magazine Shūkan Josei PRIME reported in March 2026, citing the village's tourism division, that about 2.08 million people visited in 2024, about 1.11 million of them from abroad, the first year foreign visitors exceeded half (2024 data, as of 2026-03-01).48

Parking fees at the village-run Seseragi Park Oro, Midashima Agricultural Park, and Terao lots rose on 2025-10-01 (as of 2025-03-10).49 Current village and tourist-association pages show the new fees (as of 2026-10-10).359

Large bus or microbus¥3,000¥10,00049359

The stated reasons were higher maintenance costs from rising visitor numbers and inflation, with overtourism mitigation named as a key issue (as of 2025-03-10).49

From 2026-12-01, tour groups arriving by large, medium, or micro bus at the Seseragi Park Oro lot must reserve parking in advance; this does not affect individual drivers (as of 2026-03-14).505152

The village closed the observation-deck parking lot on 2023-12-28 because of congestion and parking violations (as of 2024-06-14).26

When to Go

Snow season, foliage season, and the quieter months

Shirakawa-go is a heavy-snowfall area. First snow usually comes around early December, and snow builds up from late December to late February.36

Autumn foliage is best from the end of October to the beginning of November, and cherry blossoms around the second week of April, with exact dates depending on each year's temperatures (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current forecasts with the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).36

Snow cover is not guaranteed even in winter. The 2026 light-up was cut to four nights partly because of a snow shortage (2026 event, as of 2025-07-03).45

In Takayama, the festivals are especially crowded when their fixed dates fall on a weekend or holiday (as of 2026-09-19).23

Good to know

Buses and rooms sell out before the scenery does

Book in order of scarcity. Tourist Association accommodation booking opens about 3 months ahead, and Hokutetsu bus and Kaetsuno reserved seats open one month ahead (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current booking windows with each operator).411333

For the 2027 light-up, the first round of car-parking reservations sold out, the second round has a sale date of 2026-12-01 at 13:00, and the accommodation-lottery application period is 2026-10-01 13:00 to 2026-10-31 23:59 (2027 event, as of 2026-10-10).4746 No tickets are sold on the day.43

Forward large luggage before the village leg

Nohi warns that bus trunk space is limited and large items may not be accepted (as of 2026-10-10).6 Sending suitcases ahead between Takayama and Kanazawa avoids the problem.

The Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal has coin lockers.25 Staffed luggage storage near the terminal and at the Tourist Association takes bags from 8:00 to 17:00, from ¥500 for small and medium items and from ¥1,000 for large ones, with same-day drop-off and pick-up only (as of 2026-10-10).25

Carry cash for farmhouses, stalls, and small museums

The observation-deck shuttle takes cash only (as of 2026-10-10).2527 Payment elsewhere depends on the establishment: the Tourist Association's booking system takes credit cards, and at least one listed lodging accepts cards and e-money (as of 2026-10-10).4137

An automatic currency-exchange machine handling 12 currencies stands at the Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal (as of 2026-10-10).12

Gokayama is not Shirakawa-go

Gokayama's Ainokura and Suganuma are in Nanto City, Toyama, while Ogimachi is in Shirakawa Village, Gifu.82 Shirakawa-go's light-up reservations and parking fees do not carry over, and Ainokura's own light-up falls on February 20–21, 2027 (as of 2026-04-22).28

The Hokutetsu bus from Kanazawa stops at Gokayama (Suganuma) only from April to November (as of 2026-10-10).32

Winter footwear and snow delays

Snow lies on the ground in Shirakawa-go from late December to late February, so plan footwear for snow-covered lanes. The Tourist Association advises drivers to use winter tires and recommends 4WD.36

The observation-deck shuttle may be delayed or suspended for snow, ice, or poor visibility.27
