Planning a Shikoku Trip: What It Takes and What It's Not
Planning a Shikoku trip means choosing which of the island's three draws earns your limited days. Shikoku rewards a dedicated multi-day block, and it punishes the idea that it can work as spare days tacked onto Kansai.12

Overview
Shikoku is Japan's smallest main island, set in four prefectures (Tokushima, Kagawa, Ehime, and Kochi), and most itineraries visit a subset rather than circling the whole island.34 Its three main draws are distinct products: the 88-temple pilgrimage circuit, the Naoshima and Setouchi art islands, and nature plus onsen in places like the Iya Valley and Dogo Onsen.3567
No Shinkansen crosses onto Shikoku, so every visit starts with conventional rail or bus over a Honshu bridge or with a regional flight.14 This article sets realistic minimums per draw, explains why combining all three in one trip fails, and gives a decision framework for matching one draw to your interests and time budget.
Why Shikoku is not a Kansai day trip
Himeji and Kobe work as Kansai day trips because the rail math is short and the return is certain. Shikoku fails on both counts, and understanding the gap prevents the most common planning mistake for this island.
What a Himeji or Kobe day trip actually costs in time
Himeji, covered in Himeji Castle Day Trip, sits on the Sanyo Shinkansen corridor, with official access guidance listing about 28 minutes from Shin-Osaka and about 44 minutes from Kyoto by Shinkansen, plus about 40 minutes from Sannomiya (Kobe) by JR (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current figures with Visit Himeji).8 A loop bus links the station with the castle, so the visit fits inside a single day from a Kansai base with hours to spare.8
Kobe is closer still (see Kobe Day Trip: Beef, the Port, and Mount Rokko), which is why both cities absorb spare days so easily. No Shikoku destination has an equivalent sub-one-hour Shinkansen leg, because Shinkansen tracks do not cross the Seto Inland Sea to the island.1
What reaching Shikoku actually costs in time
The standard rail gateway runs through Okayama, itself a Sanyo Shinkansen station, where you transfer to the Rapid Marine Liner across the Great Seto Bridge to Takamatsu in approximately 55 minutes (as of 2026-04).1 The Marine Liner is a Rapid (kaisoku) service covered by the standard fare, while the Limited Express Shiokaze onward to Matsuyama and the Nanpu onward to Kochi are separate express services.1
A traveler starting in Osaka or Kyoto therefore spends most of a half day reaching a first Shikoku base once Shinkansen time, transfer time, and the bridge crossing are added (as of 2026-09-07).81 The return leg costs the same, so a two-day Shikoku detour yields roughly one usable sightseeing day.
How many days Shikoku actually needs
Minimums below describe a meaningful visit to one draw, not a token stop. Each figure includes the draw itself; transit into and out of Shikoku sits on top.
Minimums by draw: pilgrimage, art islands, nature and onsen
The Shikoku pilgrimage, or 四国遍路 (Shikoku Henro, "Shikoku pilgrimage"), links 88 temples associated with the monk 空海 (Kukai, posthumously 弘法大師 Kobo Daishi, "founder of Shingon Buddhism") across all four prefectures.3 The full walking course runs approximately 1,200 km and takes 35 to 60 days on foot, averaging about 45 days (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current figures with henro.org).39
Motorized options compress the circuit substantially: typical figures run 9 to 10 days by car, 8 to 9 days by a taxi and public transport mix, and 12 to 13 days by organized bus tour (as of 2026-09-07).9 A temple sampler of a handful of temples near one base still needs at least one full day beyond transit days to rise above a token stop (as of 2026-09-07).39
Naoshima's core art sites, including Benesse House Museum and Chichu Art Museum alongside the outdoor works, need at minimum a half day for the Benesse House area alone and a full day to two days with an overnight stay to add Honmura and Teshima.5 The wider 瀬戸内国際芸術祭 (Setouchi Triennale, "triennial contemporary art festival") activates 17 islands and coastal areas, but only during festival sessions; the 2025 edition ran spring, summer, and autumn sessions (as of 2025).10
The nature draw pairs the Iya Valley with Dogo Onsen. The Iya vine bridge, or かずら橋 (kazurabashi, "vine suspension bridge"), stretches 45 meters across its gorge and is rebuilt about every three years; it sits roughly an hour by car from Ikawa-Ikeda IC or at the end of an infrequent bus ride from JR Oboke Station.7 The 道後温泉本館 (Dogo Onsen Honkan, "historic Meiji-era public bathhouse") in Matsuyama completed its defining renovation in 1894, became the first public bathhouse designated a National Important Cultural Property in 1994, and reopened fully on July 11, 2024 after conservation work.6

Why combining all three in one trip fails
The three draws sit in different corners of the island: art islands in the Seto Inland Sea to the north, the Iya Valley deep in Tokushima's mountains, and Dogo Onsen over in Matsuyama, Ehime.576 Chaining them multiplies transit legs instead of sharing one base, so each added draw costs disproportionate daylight.
A full perimeter drive runs about 1,000 to 1,200 km, with mountain and coastal roads holding daily progress near 100 to 150 km, which is why 8 to 10 days is the recommended full-loop figure (as of 2026-09-07).2 A 3 to 4 day driving plan only allows expressway city-hopping with short sightseeing stops and accumulating driver fatigue, so it cannot stand in for the loop (as of 2026-09-07).2 Attempting temples, art islands, and Iya plus Dogo inside five days leaves each draw at sampler depth and spends a large share of the trip in transit (as of 2026-09-07).211
The geometry decides this, not taste. Each draw has its own base city and its own transit rhythm, so splitting five days across three corners means checking in and out more often than sightseeing.

JNTO's official model itinerary for Shikoku nature and traditions uses six days, which lands squarely in the five to seven day band for a single-theme visit.12
Which Shikoku draw fits your trip
Pick the draw first, then let it choose your base city. The decision below compresses the section into one branching read before the per-band detail.
The introducing logic is straightforward: short windows force one corner, medium windows reward depth in one draw, and only long windows support two draws.1112
If you have 2 to 3 days: pick one corner
With two to three days, base in one city and visit one draw, since intercity moves consume the rest (as of 2026-09-07).11 Takamatsu suits art, Matsuyama suits onsen and castle, and Tokushima suits Naruto plus the Iya edge.
Naoshima works as a ferry day trip from Takamatsu or Uno, which makes the Takamatsu corner the lowest-transit option for a short window.5 Ferry schedules are set by individual operators and differ by port and season, so confirm the timetable for your exact date rather than assuming any port works any day.
If you have 5 days: one draw done well
Five days suits Takamatsu plus Naoshima plus Matsuyama and Dogo Onsen at pace, or a slower single-draw stay such as art with an overnight or the Iya Valley with Kochi (as of 2026-09-07).11 Resist the urge to add a third corner; the extra transit day comes directly out of sightseeing.
Rail travelers should know the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass comes in 3, 4, 5, and 7 consecutive-day versions, so a five-day rail itinerary maps neatly to the five-day pass version (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current figures with JR Shikoku).4 Pass prices below are per adult, with child prices roughly half; eligibility is limited to holders of non-Japanese passports with Temporary Visitor status.4

A five-day trip with a two-day car leg may only need the three-day pass. Price your long JR legs first, then pick the shortest pass version that covers them.
If you have 7 or more days: two draws at most
Seven days allows two draws, for example art plus nature or nature plus onsen with Kochi, while keeping nights per base at two or more (as of 2026-09-07).1112 Three draws in one trip needs ten or more days, and even then the southern capes and western Ehime side trips compete for the extra nights (as of 2026-09-07).112
One-night stops across Shikoku turn the trip into packing and transit. If your plan cannot give each base two nights, cut a draw instead of cutting nights.
Getting to and around Shikoku in brief

Gateways: Okayama, Honshu bridges, and regional flights
Okayama is the main rail gateway (see Okayama and Kurashiki): ride the Sanyo Shinkansen to Okayama, then continue by conventional rail over the Great Seto Bridge into Takamatsu.14 Shikoku also holds four regional airports at Takamatsu, Matsuyama, Kochi, and Tokushima, which matter for travelers short on time or heading straight to a far corner.1 From Tokyo, the hop is short: Haneda to Tokushima Airport runs about 1 hour 10 minutes (as of 2026-09-07).12
The ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass covers JR Shikoku and partner lines plus the Takamatsu to Tonosho ferry and Shodoshima bus lines, but from October 1, 2026 it can no longer be used on Shodoshima Ferry or Shodoshima Olive Bus services, while passes bought on or before September 30, 2026 keep the old coverage (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current figures with JR Shikoku).4 Separately, Iyotetsu lines left the pass coverage from March 7, 2026 (as of 2025-10-31).13
The ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass is valid on the Seto-Ohashi Line only from Kojima Station southward. Buy a separate ticket for the Okayama to Kojima segment instead of assuming the pass covers the whole bridge crossing.4
Moving inside Shikoku: rail, ferry, and when a car earns its place
JR Shikoku limited expresses link the four prefectural capitals, but frequencies run lower than Honshu main lines, so a missed connection costs more time.111 The Kochi to Matsuyama leg deserves special attention: with no fast direct train, the JR highway bus covering the run in about 2.5 to 3 hours is normally the practical link, and pass holders ride it at a discounted 3,000 yen against the 4,000 yen regular price (as of 2026-09-07).4 Art islands are reached by ferry from Takamatsu, Uno, or nearby ports on operator-specific timetables that vary by season and can suspend in bad weather.510
The Iya Valley leg earns a rental car: the valley road from Ikawa-Ikeda IC takes about an hour by car, while bus access from JR Oboke Station runs on limited schedules set by the local operator.7 Rural bus timetables differ by operator and stop, and mountain roads reward a driver comfortable with narrow winding routes.

Spare days attached to Kansai evaporate in transit
Two days peeled off a Kansai stay yield roughly one usable Shikoku sightseeing day once both bridge crossings are subtracted (as of 2026-09-07).81 Travelers who treat Shikoku like Himeji discover the arithmetic only after the accommodation is booked and nonrefundable. Commit a genuine multi-day block or save Shikoku for a trip that has one.
The full art island experience follows festival sessions
The Triennale spreads its fuller multi-island program across spring, summer, and autumn sessions, and outside those windows some installations close; each museum also follows its own open-days calendar.105 A traveler visiting between sessions still gets Naoshima's permanent museums but not the multi-island festival. Check both the festival schedule and the Benesse open-days calendar for your exact dates before building an itinerary around art islands.
Iya Valley punishes timetable-based day planning
Rural buses from JR Oboke Station run too thinly to stack several valley sights in one day, while a car covers the Ikawa-Ikeda IC approach in about an hour and links the bridge, gorge viewpoints, and onsen lodgings on your own schedule.7 The valley's small fees add up against a rail-only budget: the vine bridge charges 550 yen adult admission and the municipal lot charges 500 yen per standard car (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current figures with Miyoshi City).7 Travelers uneasy with narrow mountain roads should overnight in the valley with a lodgings pickup or join a tour rather than improvising connections.
Temple samplers still demand fitness and advance lodging
Even a partial pilgrimage route involves mountain paths and long stone steps between temples along a circuit built for 20 to 40 km walking days, so plan footwear and pacing rather than treating temples as casual photo stops.39 Small pilgrim lodgings along the route hold few rooms and tighten in spring and autumn walking seasons, so reserve ahead instead of walking in (as of 2026-09-07).911 Local residents frequently offer お接待 (osettai, "alms or kindness offered to pilgrims"), which deserves a respectful bow of thanks rather than payment.3
