The Japanese Alps: Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route are two of the most accessible high-mountain destinations in the Japanese Alps, both within the Northern Alps of central Honshu and both open only from mid-April to mid- or late November.123 Kamikochi bans private vehicles and requires advance bus reservations from the Matsumoto side, while the Alpine Route is a ticketed multi-vehicle traverse where same-day ticket sales may be restricted at peak periods.456

Overview

Where the Japanese Alps are and why these two gateways

The Japanese Alps are three roughly parallel mountain ranges running north to south through central Honshu: the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi mountains, known as the Northern, Central, and Southern Alps.78 Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route both sit within the 飛騨山脈 (Hida Sanmyaku, "Hida Mountains," also called the Northern Alps), the northernmost of the three ranges.1

中部山岳国立公園 (Chūbu-Sangaku Kokuritsu Kōen, "Chubu-Sangaku National Park"), established in 1934, contains both Kamikochi and the Alpine Route corridor.13

Kamikochi is a valley along the 梓川 (Azusa-gawa, "Azusa River") at roughly 1,400–1,600 m elevation, about 18 km long.9 It is flanked by high peaks including 奥穂高岳 (Oku-Hotaka-dake, 3,190 m) and the active volcano 焼岳 (Yake-dake, 2,455 m).1 The Alpine Route is a 37.2 km sightseeing corridor through the same range, using six different vehicles to cross from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture with a maximum elevation difference of 1,975 m.310

Kamikochi sits between Takayama (Gifu Prefecture, to the west) and Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture, to the east), with park-and-ride access from each side.4 The Alpine Route runs between Toyama (north/west) and the Shinano-Omachi area (south/east).10 The two are not directly connected by road but share the same mountain range and combine naturally in a Takayama, Matsumoto, and Toyama loop.

The Chubu and Hokuriku Orientation: Japan's Mountain Heartland article covers the wider regional context.

Kamikochi or the Alpine Route: choosing one or both

The table below compares the two destinations on the factors that shape a trip-planning decision. Season dates and reservation rules reflect 2026 figures (as of October 2026; confirm current figures with the Alpine Route official site and Kamikochi Official Website).

Travelers with limited time or mobility may prefer the Alpine Route's vehicle-based scenery. Hikers and photographers benefit more from Kamikochi's trails. Both fit into a combined 3–5 day loop through the Chubu region.

The following decision tree sketches the main choice points.

Kamikochi

The private-car ban and how access works

Private cars, including motorcycles and rental cars, may not enter Kamikochi at any time of year. The ban protects the valley's natural environment and scenery by reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.416 This restriction is specific to Kamikochi within Chubu-Sangaku National Park; it does not apply to other Japanese mountain areas or national parks.

Access is by park-and-ride. Visitors park at either 沢渡 (Sawando) on the Matsumoto/Nagano side or 平湯/あかんだな (Hirayu/Akandana) on the Takayama/Gifu side, then take a shuttle bus or taxi into the valley.4

Sawando transfer point (Matsumoto side)

Parking at Sawando costs ¥700 per day per the Kamikochi Official Website and ¥800 per day per WaTabi (as of October 2026; confirm current figures with the Kamikochi Official Website).416

No reservation is needed on the Hirayu/Akandana shuttle (as of October 2026). Buy tickets at the window or vending machine, or pay on board if both are closed.12

Getting there from Matsumoto

Via Shin-Shimashima (train + bus)

Take the 松本電鉄 (Matsumoto Dentetsu, "Matsumoto Electric Railway") Kamikochi Line from Matsumoto Station (Platform 7) to 新島々 (Shin-Shimashima) Station, approximately 30 minutes.5 The fare is ¥710 (as of October 2026), cash only; IC cards and credit cards are not accepted on this private railway.52 The JR Pass is not valid on this line.5

From Shin-Shimashima, board the bus to Kamikochi Bus Terminal, approximately 60 minutes. The bus fare is ¥3,100 one-way (as of October 2026).2

All Matsumoto-side Kamikochi buses require reservations

Since 2025, all buses between Shin-Shimashima/Matsumoto and Kamikochi require reservations in both directions. Reservations open one month in advance through JapanBusOnline.5218

Same-day tickets are sometimes available at Shin-Shimashima Station or Kamikochi Bus Terminal, but your preferred departure may be full.5 This reservation rule is specific to the ALPICO-operated Matsumoto-side buses; buses from the Takayama/Hirayu side do not require reservations.12

The Local Buses: Getting Around in Rail-Sparse Regions article covers local bus travel more broadly.

Direct bus (National Park Liner)

Two direct buses per day run from Matsumoto Bus Terminal to Kamikochi during the April 17–November 15 season (as of October 2026). There is no direct return bus from Kamikochi to Matsumoto; return by bus to Shin-Shimashima, then train.52

Children ride at half fare. Reservations are required and these buses are usually fully booked (as of October 2026).2

Highway bus from Tokyo/Shinjuku (Sawayaka Shinshu Go)

ALPICO and Keio Bus jointly operate the Sawayaka Shinshu Go between Busta Shinjuku and Kamikochi. The 2026 operating period runs April 17–November 14 departing Shinjuku and April 18–November 15 departing Kamikochi (as of October 2026).19

Fares use a three-tier calendar system and vary significantly by date, seat type, and day or night service.

The Highway Buses: The Budget Alternative to the Shinkansen article covers highway bus booking and travel more broadly.

Getting there from Takayama and Hirayu Onsen

濃飛バス (Nōhi Basu, "Nohi Bus") operates the Takayama-to-Hirayu Onsen-to-Kamikochi line. There is no direct bus from Takayama to Kamikochi; a transfer at Hirayu Onsen is required.12

From Takayama Bus Center to Hirayu Onsen takes approximately 1 hour, with buses running roughly hourly (as of October 2026).12 From Hirayu Onsen to Kamikochi takes approximately 30 minutes, with shuttle buses every 30 minutes (as of October 2026).12

The following table shows Nohi Bus fares for the Kamikochi corridor.

No reservation is required on either the Takayama-to-Hirayu or the Hirayu/Akandana-to-Kamikochi legs (as of October 2026). Buy tickets at the ticket window or vending machine, or on board.12 This contrasts with the Matsumoto side, where all buses have required reservations since 2025.512

The Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages article covers Takayama as a base city.

Season dates and the last-bus cutoff

Kamikochi's 2026 operating period runs from April 17 (when the Kama Tunnel opens) to November 15 (as of October 2026).217 The April 27 opening festival is a ceremony, not a prerequisite for access; the road opens April 17.16

No buses run between November 16 and April 16, and the valley is closed to visitors over winter.217

The last shuttle buses leave Kamikochi in the late afternoon. Missing the last bus means hiring a taxi (last boarding approximately 18:00) or an unplanned overnight stay.16

DirectionLast departure (approximate)As of

To Shinjuku (Sawayaka Shinshu Go)16:50October 202616
Taxi (last boarding)~18:00October 202616

The Nohi Bus times come from the operator's own timetable. Its Kamikochi and Hirayu Onsen timetables show that the 17:30 from Kamikochi reaches Hirayu Onsen after the last bus to Takayama has left, so for a Takayama day trip the last workable departure is the 17:00 (as of October 2026).12

The Sawando, Matsumoto, Shinjuku, and taxi rows are approximate figures from WaTabi, a third-party guide. ALPICO's own timetable pages for those routes showed the 2026 timetable as "in preparation" (準備中) as of October 2026.1617219

These times shift across seasonal timetable editions (as of October 2026). Verify the specific travel date's schedule before planning walks.16 The Kama Tunnel access window is approximately 5:00–19:00, extended to 20:00 in July and August (as of October 2026).16

Valley walks: Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge, Myojin, and Tokusawa

Kamikochi's main draw for day visitors is a network of riverside walking routes along the Azusa River, with views of the Hotaka peaks and the active volcano Mt. Yake.114 The following walking times come from the Kamikochi Official Website.14

SegmentDistanceWalking time
Kappa Bridge to Weston Monument1.1 km~20 min
Weston Monument to Tashiro Bridge0.5 km~10 min
Tashiro Bridge to Tashiro Pond1.0 km~20 min
Tashiro Pond to Taisho Pond1.2 km~25 min
Kappa Bridge to Taisho Pond total (one-way)~3.8 km~75 min
Kappa Bridge to Myojin (one-way, via Dakesawa Marsh)~3.0 km~60 min
Myojin to Tokusawa (one-way)~3.0 km~60 min
Start at Taisho Pond to walk the route one way

Buses stop at the 大正池 (Taishō-ike, "Taisho Pond") bus stop before reaching the terminal. Getting off here and walking one-way toward 河童橋 (Kappa-bashi, "Kappa Bridge") avoids retracing the route and roughly halves the walking time.14

The Kappa Bridge to Taisho Pond route takes approximately 2.5 hours round trip and is rated beginner-friendly, with views of the smoking Mt. Yake and reflections in Taisho Pond.14 The Kappa Bridge to 明神池 (Myōjin-ike, "Myojin Pond") route takes approximately 2 hours round trip.14 Myojin Pond admission is ¥500 for adults and ¥200 for elementary-school children (as of October 2026).16

Reaching 徳沢 (Tokusawa) adds approximately 60 minutes each way beyond Myojin, making the round trip from Kappa Bridge roughly 4–5 hours.14 Tokusawa has lodges and is the practical boundary of casual valley walking.14

For shorter loops, the Bus Terminal to Kappa Bridge round trip via Tashiro Bridge takes approximately 55 minutes; extending it to Tashiro Pond takes approximately 75 minutes.14

When a walk becomes a mountain climb

The Kamikochi Official Website's walking routes end at Tokusawa.14 Beyond Tokusawa and 横尾 (Yokoo), trails become multi-day alpine routes that call for mountain-hut bookings, proper gear, and mountaineering experience. Key peaks reached from Kamikochi include 槍ヶ岳 (Yari-ga-take, "Mt. Yari") and the 穂高連峰 (Hotaka Renpō, "Hotaka Ridge"), whose Oku-Hotaka-dake (3,190 m) is the highest point in the Northern Alps.1

This article covers only valley-level walks. The Hiking in Japan: Trail Grades, Seasons, and Mountain Huts article covers alpine routes, hut booking, and gear requirements.

Staying overnight in Kamikochi

Kamikochi has hotels, mountain lodges, and campsites inside the valley, operating seasonally within the valley's open period.20 Each lodge sets its own rates, booking procedures, and policies; the information below is general guidance, not a fixed rule for every property.

Lodges near the bus terminal (5–20 minutes' walk) include several hotels and mountain lodges. Most accept credit cards, and most include dinner and breakfast in the nightly rate.20

Remote mountain lodges (55–150 minutes' walk from the terminal, including Kamikochi Myojinkan, Tokusawaen, and Yokoo Sanso) accept cash only and need advance booking, in some cases by phone only.20

小梨平キャンプ場 (Konashidaira Kyanpujō, "Konashidaira Campsite") is approximately 10 minutes' walk from the bus terminal. It offers cabins and fixed tents as well as own-tent pitches, and own-tent campers do not need a reservation (as of October 2026).2021

Overnight guests get the valley's early mornings and evenings after the day-trip buses have left; the official site highlights the tranquil mornings and starry skies.20

Hirayu Onsen and Matsumoto are common alternative bases for day trips into Kamikochi.512

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

How the traverse works: stations and vehicles in order

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture via six vehicles between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa, with connecting transport at each end.103 The following table lists every segment in the Toyama-to-Nagano direction.10

An express bus also runs from Ogizawa directly to Nagano Station (approximately 100 minutes, 61 km) as an alternative to the local bus to Shinano-Omachi.10

Between the Kurobe Cable Car and the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus, you cross Kurobe Dam on foot, a walk of about 10–15 minutes.22

The Highland Bus can stop at 弥陀ヶ原 (Midagahara) and 天狗平 (Tengudaira) en route to Murodo, but reboarding requires a reservation at each station (as of October 2026; confirm current booking requirements with the Alpine Route official site).10

Both tunnel segments formerly used trolleybuses. The Kanden Tunnel segment (Kurobe Dam to Ogizawa) switched to battery-electric buses in April 2019, and the Tateyama Tunnel segment (Murodo to Daikanbo) followed in April 2025, ending the last trolleybus service in Japan.232425

The following diagram shows the traverse sequence from the Toyama side.

Which direction to travel

The operator names two starting points: Tateyama Station on the Toyama Prefecture (west) side and Ogizawa on the Nagano Prefecture (east) side. Crossing between them usually takes 6–8 hours, including transfers and sightseeing.11 Most people ride the route one way in either direction; a round trip to Murodo and back the way you came is also possible.26

Connections at each end

Each terminus sits at the end of a lowland link, and each link joins the JR network.

From Matsumoto, the Ogizawa end is about 1 hour 40 minutes away by JR Oito Line and local bus.2610 Travelers arriving on the Hokuriku Shinkansen can start from either Toyama or Nagano Station.2810 Choose the direction that puts your next overnight accommodation at the exit end, since the crossing fills most of a day.11

What changes with direction

Your direction decides which segment needs a designated departure time: the Tateyama Cable Car from Tateyama Station if you start in Toyama, or the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus from Ogizawa if you start in Nagano (as of October 2026).6 WEB ticket booking closes at 15:00 the day before departure (as of October 2026).29

The last buses out of Murodo also differ by direction. The operator's notice on Murodo's last shuttles gives these times (as of October 2026).30

After the last bus leaves Murodo, there are no alternative transportation options.30 Plan stops so that you reach the bus stop with time to spare, whichever direction you are traveling.

Baggage forwarding runs in both directions, with different windows at each end (as of October 2026).31 The Luggage forwarding across the route section below covers fees and exclusions.

When the Toyama side is busy, the operator has pointed travelers east. In a notice dated October 9, 2026 about limited same-day ticket availability at Dentetsu Toyama and Tateyama Station on mid-October dates, it asks travelers to "consider starting from Ogizawa (Nagano Side) or traveling on a different day if available" (as of October 2026).29 That is date-specific guidance, not a standing rule that one direction is better.

Tickets, WEB tickets, and boarding-time reservations

WEB tickets are online advance-purchase tickets that let you reserve a boarding time for the first vehicle segment. They are sold through the official WEB ticket site.13

Two segments require a designated departure time when purchasing either WEB or same-day tickets: (1) the Tateyama Cable Car departing from Tateyama Station, and (2) the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus departing from Ogizawa (as of October 2026). Intermediate segments do not require time designation.6

The official site posts the WEB ticket sales schedule and updates it through the season; the version live at edit time was dated October 1, 2026.13 Check it for current availability and remaining time slots.

Same-day tickets carry real risk at peak periods

Same-day tickets are sold at counters on the day of travel and cannot be bought in advance.6 During early May (Golden Week), mid-August (Obon), and early October (foliage peak), sales of some tickets may be restricted (as of October 2026).6

At these times, arriving without a WEB ticket risks finding your preferred departure unavailable. The Sites in Japan That Require Advance Booking article lists other destinations where advance booking is critical.

Same-day ticket counters are at Dentetsu Toyama (7:30–11:00, opening at 5:00 on some days), Tateyama Station (from 20 minutes before first service), and Ogizawa (from 40 minutes before first service) (as of October 2026). Counters accept cash and major credit cards (JCB, Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, Diners, UnionPay, Discover).6

Tickets are valid for 5 days from first use, covering continued travel if you stay overnight on the route. They do not provide unlimited rides.116

Fares and what a through ticket covers

The through fare from Tateyama to Ogizawa covers the six vehicle segments between those stations. It does not include the Toyama Chiho Railway (Dentetsu Toyama to Tateyama, ¥1,420) or the bus from Ogizawa to Shinano-Omachi (¥2,000) (as of October 2026, fares effective 2026-04-15).32

The following table shows the main fare options, taken from the operator's fare table dated February 27, 2026 (as of October 2026, fares effective 2026-04-15).32

Ogizawa–Shinano-Omachi (bus)¥2,000¥4,000October 2026 (fares effective 2026-04-15)32

On the mountain segments, round-trip fares work out to roughly 10% less than two one-way tickets; the rail and bus legs at each end cost exactly double, so the end-to-end saving is smaller. Individual segment fares are available for partial rides, such as a round trip to Murodo only from either side.32

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers JR Group lines plus a short list of named non-JR rail segments, none of them on the Alpine Route; on any other private railway, you pay the fare for the section used.33 The Alpine Route's operators are not JR companies: they include Tateyama Kurobe Kanko and Kansai Electric Power, and the Dentetsu Toyama–Tateyama line belongs to the Toyama Chiho Railway.242327

Neither the pass's official site nor the route operator states the exclusion outright, but it follows from the pass's scope and the operators' identity that the pass does not cover the route. japan-guide.com's suggested itineraries say so directly, describing a trip covered by the pass "except for the Alpine Route itself."28

The approaches at each end are JR lines that the pass covers: the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama and the JR Oito Line to Shinano-Omachi.282733 The Is the JR Pass Still Worth It? The Post-2023 Price-Hike Math article covers JR Pass break-even math. The Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes article covers regional passes that may bundle Alpine Route segments.

Credit cards are accepted at 10 stations along the route: Dentetsu Toyama, Tateyama, Bijodaira, Midagahara, Murodo, Daikanbo, Kurobedaira, Kurobeko, Kurobe Dam, and Ogizawa (as of October 2026). There are no ATMs on the route.11

The Snow Corridor (Yuki no Otani) and the seasons

The 雪の大谷 (Yuki no Ōtani, "Snow Corridor") is a section of road near Murodo carved through deep snow and opened to pedestrians as a walking zone.34 The walking zone extends approximately 500 m and requires no separate entry fee beyond the route transit ticket.35

The 2026 Snow Corridor walk ran from April 15 to June 25, 9:30 to 15:00 daily (as of October 2026).34

Snow-wall height varies by year and diminishes through the season. Walls typically reach up to approximately 20 m near opening in mid-April, approximately 15 m during Golden Week, and approximately 10–15 m in May and June.35

The Alpine Route's overall season runs from April 15 to November 30, 2026 (as of October 2026). The route is completely closed in winter.3

Stops worth leaving the vehicle for: Murodo, Midagahara, and Kurobe Dam

Murodo (室堂, 2,450 m)

室堂 (Murodō) is the highest point on the route. Its bus terminal complex offers the widest range of meals and services on the Alpine Route.36

みくりが池 (Mikurigaike) is an alpine pond near the Murodo terminal.36

Trails in the 地獄谷 (Jigokudani, "Hell Valley") volcanic area near Murodo are usually closed because of high concentrations of volcanic gases (as of October 2026).36 See the Good to know entry below before approaching.

A summit hike to Mount Tateyama from Murodo takes approximately 2 hours one-way and requires proper hiking shoes.36 Mountain lodges near Murodo, many with hot-spring baths, offer accommodation, and the Raichozawa camping ground is approximately 1 hour's walk from the terminal.36

Midagahara (弥陀ヶ原, ~1,930 m)

弥陀ヶ原 (Midagahara) is a wetland plateau with elevated wooden boardwalks. Two popular circuits are available: a 1 km loop (~30 minutes) and a 2 km loop (~1 hour).37

The Highland Bus stops at Midagahara, but reboarding requires a reservation (as of October 2026).10 The Midagahara Hotel, next to the bus stop, is the main overnight option at this altitude.37

Kurobe Dam (黒部ダム)

黒部ダム (Kurobe Damu, "Kurobe Dam") is Japan's tallest dam at 186 m, completed in 1963.2238 A steep flight of stairs leads to the observation deck, about a 15-minute climb.22

The dam's seasonal water discharge, 観光放水 (kankō hōsui, "sightseeing water release"), runs from June 26 to October 15 (as of October 2026), weather permitting.11

Luggage forwarding across the route

The route operator runs a same-day baggage forwarding service between the Toyama end and the Nagano end of the route, operating from April 15 to November 8, 2026 (as of October 2026).31

The service endpoints are Dentetsu Toyama Station or Tateyama-area hotels on one side and Shinano-Omachi Station or Omachi Onsen on the other. It does not run between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa within the mountain segment; it carries baggage around the entire route between the lowland terminals.31

Dentetsu Toyama to Tateyama-area hotels (local)¥2,000October 202631
Shinano-Omachi to Omachi Onsen (local)¥2,000October 202631

The service is cash only; no credit cards are accepted (as of October 2026).31 No advance reservation is needed, but arrive 20–30 minutes before departure.31

Drop-off windows: Dentetsu Toyama 5:00–10:00 AM; Shinano-Omachi 7:40–10:30 AM; hotels until 8:30 AM (as of October 2026).31 Pick-up windows: Dentetsu Toyama 3:30–6:00 PM; Shinano-Omachi 3:00–5:45 PM; hotels after 4:30 PM (as of October 2026).31

Cash, valuables, fragile items, and improperly packed baggage are excluded. The service is weather-dependent and may be suspended.31

The alternative is standard 宅急便 (takkyūbin, "courier delivery") service, which delivers next-day rather than same-day. The Luggage Forwarding in Japan: How Takkyubin Courier Services Work article covers that option.

Altitude and Weather Preparation

Temperatures at Murodo and in Kamikochi

At Murodo (2,450 m), temperatures run approximately 15°C lower than at sea level.11

MonthLow (°C)High (°C)
April-36
May310
June714
July1116
August1218

October310
November-52

These are long-term averages, not year-specific forecasts.11

Near-freezing conditions persist after the April opening, and highs reach only the high teens at midsummer.11

Kamikochi sits at approximately 1,500 m.1 Expect noticeably cooler conditions than in lowland cities, with cold mornings in spring and autumn.

Wind, rain, and service suspensions

Alpine Route suspensions

The operator states that vehicles on the Alpine Route may stop running because of weather-related traffic restrictions, facility failures, or other unavoidable circumstances.39 It does not specify which segments are most weather-sensitive. Because the six vehicles run in sequence, a suspension on any one of them interrupts the traverse.

If a vehicle you reserved on a WEB ticket is suspended, WEB tickets you have not yet collected are refunded to the original credit card with no fee (as of October 2026; confirm current terms with the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route official site).39 If you have already collected your tickets, ask the staff at the station where you collected them.39

The operator's 運行情報 (unkō jōhō, "operating information") page lists the six vehicles and posts current operating notices. The page is in Japanese; the site's language menu leads to each language's top page, not a translated status page.40 Check it on the morning of travel.

Murodo's last buses leave at 16:20 toward Toyama and 16:30 toward Nagano, and after the last bus there is no alternative transportation (as of October 2026).30 A delay earlier in the day eats directly into that margin.

Kamikochi: rainfall closures on the access road

Nagano Prefecture applies a 雨量事前規制 (uryō jizen kisei, "precautionary rainfall road closure") to Prefectural Road 24, the Kamikochi Park Line, between Nakanoyu and Kamikochi in Matsumoto City, a 7.6 km section. The road closes when rainfall reaches 80 mm in total, 20 mm in one hour, or 10 mm in 15 minutes (as of October 2026).41 This rule applies to that road section only, not to other mountain roads in the region.

If you have a tight onward connection (an evening Shinkansen from Toyama or Nagano, for example), build slack into the schedule. The Typhoon Season and Tsunami Awareness for Visitors article covers seasonal typhoon patterns.

What to carry for a day in the mountains

The operator's FAQ gives seasonal clothing guidance for Murodo.11 In general, pack layers, a windproof shell, a warm mid-layer, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen regardless of valley forecasts.

Sturdy walking shoes suit the maintained valley paths in Kamikochi and the paths around the Murodo terminal. The Mount Tateyama summit hike from Murodo requires proper hiking shoes.36

Murodo's bus terminal has the widest range of meals and services on the Alpine Route.36 Carry water and snacks for walks away from the terminals.

At 2,450 m, Murodo is below the altitude where serious altitude illness is typical, but mild symptoms (headache, nausea) can occur, especially with exertion. Walk slowly, drink water, and descend promptly if symptoms set in.

The What to Pack for Japan: Weather, Footwear, and Cash-Carrying Norms article covers general packing guidance.

Bears in Kamikochi

Asian black bears, ツキノワグマ (Tsukinowaguma, "moon bear"), are present in Kamikochi with regular sightings. The Kamikochi Visitor Center (Ministry of the Environment) maintains an updated bear-sighting map for the area.42

Bears are an active concern on Kamikochi trails

The visitor center categorizes three encounter types: adult bears, mothers with cubs (particularly dangerous), and food-conditioned bears that seek human food and sometimes attack tents or other equipment.42 On September 27, 2023, a bear attacked a solo walker on the Dakesawa Marsh boardwalk on the route toward Myojin Pond.43

Follow visitor-center notices on recent sightings, and stay on the marked paths as Kamikochi's park rules require.4244 Bear spray may not be carried inside the cabin of the Sawando shuttle bus (as of October 2026).17

To report a bear sighting, contact the Kamikochi Information Center at 0263-95-2433.42

The Bear Safety in Japan for Hikers and Rural Travelers article covers bear encounter protocols in more detail.

Fitting Both Into a Takayama, Matsumoto, and Toyama Loop

A sample loop and its direction

Kamikochi pairs most naturally with a Matsumoto base (direct bus connection) or a Takayama base (via Hirayu Onsen). The Alpine Route pairs with Toyama or Shinano-Omachi/Nagano at either end.51210

A natural loop through the region connects Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Takayama, Toyama, and the Alpine Route. The following diagram shows one clockwise option.

An alternative with Kanazawa: Kanazawa to Toyama to the Alpine Route to Shinano-Omachi to Matsumoto, then Kamikochi as a day trip, then Takayama and Shirakawa-go, returning to Kanazawa.

The Matsumoto and Nagano: Castles, Temples, and Snow Monkeys, Kanazawa: Gardens, Geisha Districts, and Crafts, and Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages articles cover each base city.

How many days to allow

Kamikochi as a day trip from Matsumoto or Takayama takes one full day (early departure, return by last bus).512 An overnight stay inside the valley extends this to 1.5–2 days, with evening and early-morning hours after the buses have left.20

The Alpine Route traverse is a full travel day (usually 6–8 hours from Tateyama to Ogizawa, including transfers and sightseeing, per the operator FAQ).11

The minimum for both destinations is 3 nights / 4 days: for example, Matsumoto (night 1), Kamikochi day trip, transit to Alpine Route start (night 2), traverse day, exit city (night 3). A spare day gives room if weather suspends a segment, since the operator states that Alpine Route vehicles may stop running because of weather.39

The A Nature and Outdoors-Focused Japan Itinerary Framework article covers broader multi-day itinerary planning.

Passes and tickets that cover the loop

The アルペン・高山・松本エリア周遊きっぷ (Arupen Takayama Matsumoto Eria Shūyū Kippu, "Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass") covers the full Alpine Route, the Toyama Chiho Railway, and JR lines from Nagoya to Toyama and from Nagoya to Shinano-Omachi via Matsumoto; its coverage list does not include Kamikochi buses (as of October 2026; confirm current terms with the Tourist Pass site).27

The Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes and Regional and Area Rail Passes: Alternatives to the Nationwide JR Pass articles cover pass options and eligibility in detail.

Good to know

Golden Week and foliage weekends are the pressure points

Early May (Golden Week), mid-August (Obon), and early October are the Alpine Route's peak periods, when same-day ticket sales may be restricted (as of October 2026; confirm current booking windows with the Alpine Route official site and ALPICO).6 Kamikochi's buses and parking are most crowded on weekends and holidays from late July through August, during Obon, and in the October foliage season.15

Book Alpine Route WEB tickets and Matsumoto-side Kamikochi bus reservations as soon as sales open. ALPICO opens Kamikochi bus reservations one month ahead (as of October 2026),5 and the Alpine Route posts its WEB ticket sales schedule on the official site.13

The Golden Week and Obon: The Domestic-Travel-Crowding Weeks to Plan Around article covers domestic holiday crowd patterns.

The last bus, not the trail, sets your Kamikochi day

The last Nohi Bus shuttle from Kamikochi to Hirayu Onsen leaves at 17:30, and the last one that connects through to Takayama is the 17:00 (as of October 2026).12 On the Sawando side, the last shuttle leaves around 17:55, per third-party figures (as of October 2026).16 Missing it means a taxi (last boarding approximately 18:00) or an unplanned overnight in the valley.16

Plan walks backward from the booked return departure, and verify the specific date's timetable, since last-bus times shift across seasonal editions (as of October 2026).16

Carry cash for mountain counters

The Alpine Route baggage-forwarding service is cash only (as of October 2026).31 The Matsumoto Dentetsu train (Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima, ¥710) is also cash only, and IC cards are not accepted; ALPICO and WaTabi report IC card support planned for 2027 (as of October 2026).516

Remote Kamikochi mountain lodges 55 minutes' walk or more from the terminal are cash only.20 Kamikochi public toilets operate on an approximately ¥100 tip or donation system (as of October 2026).16

Credit cards are accepted at ticket counters at 10 stations along the Alpine Route, but there are no ATMs on the route (as of October 2026).11

Murodo's Jigokudani area can be closed

地獄谷 (Jigokudani) trails near Murodo are usually closed due to high concentrations of volcanic gases (as of October 2026).36 Closure status can change depending on gas levels; check with the Murodo visitor center before approaching.36 This is a Murodo-specific condition, not a general Alpine Route restriction.

Mobile signal is patchy in side valleys and tunnels

The Alpine Route FAQ notes that mobile phones get reception at most stations, and free WiFi is available at six stations: Tateyama, Bijodaira, Murodo, Daikanbo, Kurobedaira, and Kurobeko (as of October 2026).11 Signal in transit between stations (inside tunnels, on the ropeway, on highland buses through mountain terrain) is not guaranteed. Kamikochi side valleys and trails away from the bus terminal area have limited coverage, typical of mountain areas.

Download bus timetables, tickets (mobile tickets for ALPICO), and offline maps before ascending. The Transit Apps and Route Planning for Japan article covers useful apps.

The new Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route is a package tour, not a casual add-on

The 黒部・宇奈月キャニオンルート (Kurobe-Unazuki Kyanion Rūto, "Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route") links Kurobe Dam (on the Alpine Route) to Keyakidaira (on the Kurobe Gorge Railway) via approximately 18 km of infrastructure originally built for hydroelectric construction.45 Its first season runs from October 2 to November 30, 2026 (as of October 2026).46

Access is by package tour only; visitors must book a travel package that includes accommodation, and no individual access is available. Capacity is limited to approximately 400 tourists per week.46

Packages start from around ¥130,000 per person, not including transportation to the route, and are sold through JTB, NTA, Hankyu, and Kintetsu (as of October 2026).46 No English-language packages had been identified (as of October 2026).46

Dates for 2027 have not been officially announced; the season is expected to run from mid or late April through November (as of October 2026).46

Separately, the 黒部峡谷鉄道 (Kurobe Kyōkoku Tetsudō, "Kurobe Gorge Railway") resumed full-line service between Unazuki and Keyakidaira on October 1, 2026. The Nekomata–Keyakidaira section had been suspended since the January 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.4748 Restricted areas remain in the Keyakidaira sightseeing area, and passenger numbers on trains to Keyakidaira are limited (as of October 2026).4748
