Chugoku's Connecting Logistics: Threading San'yo and San'in

How to get around Chugoku region starts with one distinction: the San'yo coast is a Shinkansen trip, while the San'in coast is a separate limited express and bus trip across the mountains.12 This guide shows how to thread the two together without treating them as a single fast loop.

Overview

Chugoku divides into 山陽 (San'yo, "south side of the mountains") along the Seto Inland Sea and 山陰 (San'in, "north side of the mountains") along the Sea of Japan.3 The San'yo side runs through Okayama, Hiroshima, and Shin-Yamaguchi on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata.41

The San'in side runs through Tottori, Yonago, Matsue, and Izumo, and no Shinkansen reaches it.25 You reach it by conventional limited express, highway bus, or rental car, and you move along it station by station rather than on one through ride.65

Plan San'yo and San'in as two segments with separate nights. The rest of this article explains the spine, the crossings, the coastal movement, the ticket math, and the night counts that make the combination work.

The San'yo spine: Shinkansen connected coast

The Sanyo Shinkansen is the fast, frequent spine. Limited expresses and local JR lines feed off it, and the Miyajima ferry extends it to the island gate.41

Where the Shinkansen stops in Chugoku

Okayama, Hiroshima, and Shin-Yamaguchi are the practical Chugoku gateways on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata.4 The Sanyo-San'in Area Pass covers reserved seats on this Shinkansen section when you reserve before boarding (as of 2024-08-01; confirm current coverage with JR West).4

Ordinary reserved and non-reserved cars in the valid area are covered, while Green Car travel needs a separate Green ticket plus express ticket.4 The Tokaido Shinkansen toward Tokyo and the Kyushu Shinkansen south of Hakata are not covered.4

If you carry large luggage, note the oversized baggage rule. Bags totaling over 160 cm and under 250 cm on three sides need a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area on the Sanyo Shinkansen.4

Why San'yo feels easy compared with San'in

San'yo has Shinkansen frequency plus JR West conventional lines and a published route map and route finder for planning.7 Special rapid, rapid, and local JR West trains in the pass area are covered, so day trips stack easily.4

The JR West Miyajima Ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima is also covered.4 Boarding requires a 100 yen visitation tax payment (as of 2023-10).4

San'in has no such spine. Its limited expresses run less often, and coastal movement depends on timed connections, buses, and cars.68

Crossing the mountainous interior

Every San'yo to San'in move crosses mountainous interior. Expect a multi hour leg, not a quick hop.98

Okayama to Yonago, Matsue, and Izumo by limited express

The limited express Yakumo links Okayama Station to Yonago, Matsue, and Izumoshi Station, with onward connections toward Izumo Taisha.9 JR West groups Yakumo with Super Inaba as the Okayama to Tottori, Yonago, and Izumoshi corridor family.2

The train is a tilting 273 series set built for mountain curves, running at 120 km/h with about a three hour travel time between Okayama and the Izumo area.9 Green and ordinary seats are offered, with luggage areas and power outlets in the current sets.9

Service runs at about 30 trains daily on this corridor (as of 2024-10-31; confirm current timetable with JR West).9 Reserve when your dates are fixed, especially around holidays.

Use Okayama as the transfer base for the Yakumo corridor

Okayama keeps you on the Shinkansen until the last minute. Arrive by Shinkansen, change to the Yakumo in the same station, and start the San'in block in Matsue or Izumo without an extra overnight on the San'yo side.92

The limited express Super Hakuto connects Osaka to Tottori, with some trains starting in Kyoto and some continuing to Kurayoshi.102 The Kamigori to Chizu section uses the Chizu Express Line shortcut across the mountains.10

Service runs at about eight round trips per day between Osaka and Tottori (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current timetable with JR West).10 All cars are reserved seats with no non-reserved option, including a small Green section, so you need a reserved or Green limited express ticket before boarding (as of 2026-09-07).10

The limited express Super Inaba connects Okayama Station and Tottori Station, jointly operated with Chizu Express.112 It runs as a two car set with ordinary reserved seats only and no Green car or onboard sales.11 JR West status pages list Super Inaba as Tottori to Okayama and Super Hakuto as Tottori and Kurayoshi to Kyoto and Osaka.6

Board Super Hakuto only with a reserved ticket in hand

There is no non-reserved car to fall back on. If you miss your booked departure, you can use a later Super Hakuto the same day on the deck standing area, but you still need a valid limited express ticket for the day.10

Hiroshima and Shin-Yamaguchi to the San'in side

From the western San'yo side, rail options narrow. The limited express Super Oki connects Shin-Yamaguchi with Yonago and Tottori, while Super Matsukaze connects Tottori with Yonago and Masuda.62

JR West groups Super Oki and Super Matsukaze as the Shin-Yamaguchi to Izumoshi and Tottori family.2 On the Tottori to Shin-Yamaguchi section, Super Oki runs with the fewest services among JR West conventional limited expresses: two southbound and one northbound between Tottori and Shin-Yamaguchi, plus one southbound and two northbound between Yonago and Shin-Yamaguchi (as of 2026-09-07).12 It usually runs as two cars with reserved and non-reserved seats in a 2 plus 2 layout and no power outlets, and it is scheduled to become all reserved from spring 2027 (as of 2026-09-07).12

Buses fill much of this gap. The San'in Tourism Organization tables list Hiroshima Bus Center links to San-in stations and Okayama links to Izumo, Matsue, Yonago, and Kurayoshi through Ichibata, Hinomaru, and Chugoku JR Bus.5

City guidance gives the shape: Hiroshima to Matsue runs about 3 hours with about 18 round trips, while Okayama to Matsue runs about 3 hours with about 7 round trips (as of 2026-09-07; confirm current timetables with the operators).8

Highway buses where rail runs thin

Highway buses link Matsue with Tokyo (overnight only), Kyoto, Osaka, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Okayama, Kobe, and Nagoya (overnight only).8 Osaka to Matsue takes about 4.5 hours with about 8 round trips including 1 overnight, while Kyoto to Matsue takes about 5 hours with about 4 round trips including 1 overnight (as of 2026-09-07).8

The Sanyo-San'in Area Pass covers West Japan JR Bus route buses inside the valid area but not expressway buses.4 So a highway bus leg is a separate ticket even when you hold the rail pass.4

Discount offers for overseas visitors appear from time to time. Examples listed on the San'in portal include Hiroshima to Izumo from 1,000 yen, Hiroshima to Matsue at 1,400 yen, Osaka to Shimane points at 2,000 yen, and an Osaka to Tottori 1,000 yen campaign (as of 2026-09-07).13

Overnight buses save a hotel night but cost a sightseeing day

A Tokyo or Nagoya overnight bus arrives with limited sleep. Daytime buses from Hiroshima or Okayama cost a half day but leave you fit for the San'in block. Choose based on recovery time, not ticket price alone.8

Moving along the San'in coast

Once you arrive, movement slows. Think in station anchored days, not in a coastal cruise.5

Rail along the coast and where it slows down

The coastal limited express skeleton is Super Matsukaze between Yonago, Masuda, and Tottori plus Super Oki between Shin-Yamaguchi, Yonago, and Tottori.6 Local trains, station transfer guides, and airport shuttles fill the gaps station by station.5

The San'in Tourism Organization publishes station by station transfer PDFs for Tottori, Kurayoshi, Yonago, Sakaiminato, Matsue, and Izumo, plus how to ride trains and airport shuttles.5 Use them to check the last mile before you fix an overnight stop.

Loop buses help inside the main cities. Examples cited on the regional portal are the Loop Kirinjishi Bus in Tottori and the Matsue Lake Line Bus in Matsue (fares cited around 400 yen and 210 yen per ride respectively, as of 2026-09-07).13

Why a rental car changes the San'in math

A car buys schedule freedom where trains and buses run rarely. It suits rural stops, dune and mountain trailheads, and multi stop rural days with luggage.13

The San'in portal frames rental cars as airport pickup links, including Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport, Izumo Airport, Yonago Kitaro Airport, Hagi/Iwami Airport, and Oki Airport connections.13 Pickup at arrival and drop off at departure keeps rental days tight.

Driving documents must be arranged before departure. Japan accepts an original paper international driving permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, valid up to one year from issue and further limited to one year after arrival as shown by the passport entry stamp.14

If you pass through an automated gate with no stamp, visit a staffed gate or the customs inspection desk to get the stamp before renting.14 Permits under other conventions, including the Vienna Convention, are not valid even if the issuing country also signed the Geneva Convention.14

Confirm driving eligibility before paying for a San'in car leg

Bring the original home license plus the correct permit or, for licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, the official Japanese translation route. A phone image or unofficial online document does not count at the counter.14

Paying for a two coast trip

Two coasts mean two cost shapes. The decision below shows when an area pass fits and when point to point wins.

What the Sanyo-San'in Area Pass covers

The Sanyo-San'in Area Pass gives unlimited rides from Kansai and Fukuoka to Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tottori, and Shimane.4 It is valid for 7 consecutive days, usable all year, from 00:00 on the start day to 24:00 on the last day Japan time.4

Figures in this table describe pass and add-on shape (as of dates in the As of column; confirm current figures with JR West and bus operators).413

Reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and on limited expresses including Haruka, Yakumo, and Konotori are covered when reserved before boarding.4 Trains with only reserved seats have no non-reserved fallback.4

Eligibility is narrow. You must hold a foreign government passport and enter as a Temporary Visitor, present the passport to receive the pass, and carry it with the pass when staff ask.4 One person cannot hold two copies of the same pass for the same period.4

Reservations open one month before boarding from 10:00 am Japan time on the same day of the preceding month, and the sales price follows the purchase date rather than the exchange or use date (as of 2024-08-01).4 From the 7th reservation, book at a JR ticket office.4

When point to point tickets win

A 7 day area pass only pays off when you stack enough long JR legs inside its area.4 A San'yo only trip of two or three Shinkansen hops, or a short Hiroshima plus Okayama run, often costs less as point to point tickets checked in the JR West route finder, which shows regular ticket searches outside passes (as of 2026-09-07).7

Pass prices are subject to change, and reservation and receipt methods change with them.4 Compare before buying, and do not buy the nationwide pass by reflex for a Chugoku only itinerary.

Highway buses sit outside the rail pass calculation

Expressway buses need separate tickets even with the area pass. Add them as cash lines in your budget rather than assuming the pass absorbs them.4

Realistic time budgets

Chugoku is not a Kobe or Nara style add-on. Each interior crossing consumes a half day, and coastal frequency is lower than Shinkansen frequency.98

San'yo only, San'in extension, and full two coast minimums

A San'yo only run with Okayama, Hiroshima, and Miyajima works as a compact multi day block on the Shinkansen spine.41 Adding San'in means adding a separate block, not stretching the same nights thinner.98

Benchmarks set expectations. Hiroshima to Matsue runs about 3 hours by bus, Okayama to Matsue about 3 hours, Osaka to Matsue about 4.5 hours, and Kyoto to Matsue about 5 hours (as of 2026-09-07).8 The Yakumo corridor takes about three hours through mountainous terrain at 120 km/h.9

Count each crossing as a transit day. A full two coast trip needs San'yo nights plus San'in nights plus the move days between them.

Two sample segment splits

Split one keeps a San'yo base in Okayama or Hiroshima, then moves once into a San'in block in Matsue and Izumo or in Tottori.98 Split two enters San'in from Kansai by Super Hakuto, works east to west along the coast, then exits south to the Shinkansen by Yakumo or Super Oki routing.10912

Both splits treat the interior legs as fixed transit anchors. Fix the limited express or bus first, then place sightseeing around it, since the last connection of the day decides where you sleep.68

Good to know

Do not plan San'yo plus San'in as a single fast loop

San'yo to San'in crossings run through mountainous interior and take hours in each direction.92 A loop that looks tidy on a map becomes two long transit days with no buffer for missed connections.

Give each coast its own nights. If nights are short, choose one coast and save the other for a return trip.

Interior crossings eat half a day each

The Yakumo corridor takes about three hours, while Matsue bus benchmarks run 3 to 5 hours from Hiroshima, Okayama, Osaka, and Kyoto (bus times as of 2026-09-07; rail shape as of 2024-10-31).98 Station transfers, seat reservations, and luggage handling add time on top.

Start crossings in the morning. An afternoon start risks arriving after local connections thin out.

San'in frequency drops shape your overnight stops

The long Tottori to Shin-Yamaguchi Super Oki section runs with the fewest daily workings among JR West conventional limited expresses (as of 2026-09-07).12 Coastal limited expresses as a group run less often than the Shinkansen spine, with fewer backup departures.6

Missing the last connection costs a night, not an hour. Check the last departure before you commit to a late temple, dune, or museum finish.

Reserve seats on limited express legs in peak periods

Sanyo-San'in Area Pass reserved seats must be booked before boarding, with bookings from the 7th made at a JR ticket office.4 Super Hakuto has only reserved cars, so peak season riders need early reservations (as of 2026-09-07).10

Book the longest limited express first. Shinkansen legs have more alternatives when one departure fills.

Rental car permits and one way fees need advance checks

Only Geneva Convention conforming permits are valid, and permits under other conventions are invalid even from Geneva signatories.14 Arrange the original paper permit plus home license before departure, and secure the passport entry stamp for the arrival date check.14

One way fees, tolls, parking, and fuel sit on top of the daily rate. Get an operator quote for pickup and drop off points before locking the San'in driving days.
