Chubu and Hokuriku Orientation: Japan's Mountain Heartland

Chubu and Hokuriku are the mountainous center of Honshu and its Sea of Japan coast, the region you cross when you travel from Tokyo to Kyoto via Kanazawa, Takayama, or the Japanese Alps instead of on the Tokaido Shinkansen.12 Whether the trip works depends on season and bus bookings: the high Alpine roads close for winter, and several key bus links can only be boarded with a reservation.34

Fees, rules, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at the official sites of JR West, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, and the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, and with each bus operator named below.

Overview

This Chubu region travel guide is a planning map, not a destination guide. It covers four traveler sub-areas, the rail and bus links that join them into a loop, and what each season opens and closes.

Each sub-area has its own deep-dive article, named by title below. Fares and pass prices belong to Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes.

What "Chubu" and "Hokuriku" Actually Mean

The Chubu region is the part of central Honshu made up of nine prefectures: Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Nagano, Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Gifu, and Aichi.1 Reference works divide it into three parts.1

TermReadingMeaning
中部Chūbu"Central (region)", the nine-prefecture region of central Honshu1
東海TōkaiThe Pacific-coast part of Chubu1
中央高地Chūō Kōchi"Central Highlands", the inland part of Chubu1
北陸HokurikuThe Sea of Japan-coast part of Chubu12

This article uses Hokuriku in its narrow sense, the one the three prefectural governments use themselves: Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui.2 Some definitions add Niigata as a fourth Hokuriku prefecture.15

Since the Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Tsuruga in March 2024, the three prefectural capitals (Toyama, Kanazawa, and Fukui) are within one hour of each other by train.2

The four sub-areas below follow traveler routes, not prefecture lines. The Fuji Five Lakes in Yamanashi and the Niigata ski country are part of Chubu but outside the scope of this article.

Who This Region Suits, and What It Asks of You

The draws are specific. Kanazawa has Kenrokuen Garden, Omicho Market, the Higashi Chaya geisha district, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art; Takayama has a historic old town and sake breweries; Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage thatched-roof village.6

Further east, Matsumoto Castle's keep, built in 1594, is the oldest surviving example of a castle with five external stories and six internal floors.7

The friction is just as specific. Shirakawa-go has no railway station, so public-transport access is by bus.8 Hokutetsu's Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go to Takayama bus is seat-reserved on every service and must be booked before boarding (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current details with Hokutetsu).4

Winter in Hokuriku brings frequent cloudy, snowy, or rainy days, with heavy snow in the mountains and, in strong cold spells, on the plains.5 The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and Kamikochi only operate from spring to November (as of 2026-10-10).39

For the broader trade-offs of leaving the main tourist cities, see What You Gain and Give Up Beyond the Big Five: An Honest Guide.

The Four Sub-Areas at a Glance

The table gives the fast version; the subsections below add one or two lines each and name the deep-dive article. The season and access cells are dated in the table (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current details with each rail and bus operator).

Hokuriku Coast: Kanazawa, Toyama, and Fukui

Kanazawa is the cultural anchor of the coast: Kenrokuen Garden, Omicho Market seafood, the Higashi Chaya geisha district, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.6 The full guide is Kanazawa: Gardens, Geisha Districts, and Crafts.

Toyama is the western gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route; travelers take the Dentetsu Toyama line to Tateyama Station, one of the route's two entry points.17 Fukui and Tsuruga are stations on the Hokuriku Shinkansen segment that opened from Kanazawa on 2024-03-16, with Tsuruga as the current terminus.10

The Noto Peninsula, north of Kanazawa, is still recovering from the January 2024 earthquake; see the Noto entry under Good to know.

The Hida Mountains: Takayama and Shirakawa-go

Takayama is a mountain town with a historic center of old wooden houses, temples, shrines, and craft stores, plus a morning market and the Hida Folk Village of farmhouses.12 Gero, a hot-spring town on the same rail line, is about 105 minutes from Nagoya by Limited Express Hida (as of 2026-10-10).18

The World Heritage site "Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama" was inscribed in December 1995 and covers Ogimachi in Shirakawa Village (Gifu) and Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama (Toyama).1920 Its 合掌造り (gasshō-zukuri, "praying-hands construction") farmhouses have steep thatched roofs whose structure evolved around the local environment and around silkworm rearing.1920

None of these villages has a rail station, so the area runs on buses.8 The full guide is Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages.

The Japanese Alps and Nagano

Matsumoto's draw is its National Treasure castle; Nagano City has Zenkoji Temple, a 10- to 15-minute drive from Nagano Station, and is the base for Shibu Onsen and the Jigokudani snow monkeys.147 The full guide is Matsumoto and Nagano: Castles, Temples, and Snow Monkeys.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the mountains between Tateyama Station on the Toyama side and Ogizawa on the Nagano side, and private vehicles are not allowed between the two.17 Kamikochi is closed to private cars during its season; visitors switch to shuttle buses or taxis at Sawando on the Matsumoto side or Hirayu and Akandana on the Takayama side (as of 2026-03-23).9

Both are covered in The Japanese Alps: Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. For the Kiso Valley post towns, see Walking the Nakasendo: Magome to Tsumago and Beyond; for winter skiing at Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen, see Planning a Ski or Snowboard Trip to Japan: Season Timing and Regional Choice.

Nagoya: The Southern Gateway

Nagoya Station is where the Tokaido Shinkansen meets the Limited Express Hida to Takayama; JNTO's itinerary gives the Hida ride as about 2 hours 26 minutes on an undated page (as of 2026-10-10).12 That makes Nagoya a natural entry point or rest night for the Takayama end of the region.

Chubu Centrair International Airport is an alternative international arrival point. Its train station connects directly to the terminal, and the fastest Meitetsu train to Nagoya, the μ-SKY, takes 28 minutes (as of 2026-10-10).16

For Takayama, Nohi Bus sells a combined "Takayama-Centrair ticket" covering the Meitetsu train from Centrair to Meitetsu Gifu (56 minutes) and the highway bus from Meitetsu Gifu to Takayama; the bus leg needs a reservation, which opens on the same date one month before travel (as of 2026-10-10).21

For Gero, the airport's own route is the μ-SKY to Nagoya and then the Limited Express Hida, about 2.5 hours in total (as of 2026-10-10).18

How the Region Connects

Two rail lines and a handful of reserved bus routes form the skeleton. The Hokuriku Shinkansen runs along the coast from Tokyo, the Limited Express Hida climbs from Nagoya through the mountains, and buses fill the gap where Shirakawa-go has no railway.10812

The map below shows the hubs and the mode on each link. Journey times follow in the table.

All times below are approximate and dated in the As of column (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current timetables with JR West, JR Central, and each bus operator). Fares are deliberately left to the Logistics article.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen From Tokyo

The 北陸新幹線 (Hokuriku Shinkansen, "Hokuriku bullet train line") runs from Tokyo via Nagano, Toyama, and Kanazawa to Tsuruga; its Kanazawa to Tsuruga section opened on 2024-03-16.1011 Three train names matter for planning.

NameJapaneseRole
KagayakiかがやきFast Tokyo through service10
HakutakaはくたかStopping Tokyo through service10
TsurugiつるぎShuttle service connecting with trains at Tsuruga10

On the fastest train, Tokyo to Kanazawa takes 2 hours 24 minutes (as of the 2026-03-14 timetable).11 The last Tokyo departure that runs through toward Fukui leaves at 20:00 (as of the 2026-03-14 timetable).11

The Tsuruga Transfer to Kyoto and Osaka

Since 2024-03-16, the Limited Express Thunderbird runs only between Osaka and Tsuruga, and the Shirasagi runs to Tsuruga from Nagoya and Maibara.10 Through Thunderbird service to Kanazawa ended, so anyone traveling between Kansai or Nagoya and Hokuriku changes at Tsuruga to a connecting Shinkansen.10

The transfer is vertical, not cross-platform. Shinkansen platforms are on the third floor, a dedicated のりかえ改札口 (norikae kaisatsuguchi, "transfer ticket gate") is on the second floor, and the conventional limited-express platforms are on the first floor, linked by escalators, stairs, and elevators.1023 JR West's standard transfer time at Tsuruga is 8 minutes (as of the March 2024 timetable).10

Put both tickets through the transfer gate

At the second-floor transfer gate, insert the ticket for the train you arrived on and the ticket for the train you are boarding together. JR West asks passengers to check the car and seat number of the connecting train before they start the transfer (as of 2024-03-08).23

For trip planning, the Tsuruga change stays for the foreseeable future. According to Kyodo and Jiji Press reports, the ruling parties' committee chose a route via Obama and Kyoto for the Tsuruga to Shin-Osaka extension on 2026-07-15, with a new Kyoto station near JR Katsuragawa Station.2425 The plan has not yet been adopted by the national government; the reports put construction at about 26 years, and the committee's aim to start work in FY2027 has been publicly questioned by Kyoto's mayor (as of 2026-07-16).2426

The Nagoya Side: Limited Express Hida

The 特急ひだ (Tokkyū Hida, "Limited Express Hida") runs from Nagoya through Gero to Takayama on the 高山本線 (Takayama Honsen, "Takayama Main Line").1812 A limited number of services continue to Toyama: JR Central sells a discounted Hida round-trip ticket from Nagoya and Gifu to Toyama via the Takayama Main Line, and notes that some Hida trains do not run between Takayama and Toyama (as of 2026-10-10).27

That makes the Hida the Nagoya-side way into the mountains, and a rail link between Takayama and the Hokuriku coast. Part of the line was suspended in spring 2026; see Rail Disruptions and Substitute Buses under Good to know.

Shirakawa-go has no rail station. Shirakawa Village's access page lists bus links to Takayama, Kanazawa, Toyama, Takaoka, and Nagoya, run by several operators, though the page itself is old (page last updated 2018-02-07).8 Reservation rules are set by each operator, not region-wide.

Nohi Bus runs Takayama to Shirakawa-go in about 50 minutes, with services continuing to Kanazawa, Toyama, and Takaoka (as of 2026-10-10).2228 Reservations are required on some or all departures; check the operator's Japanese timetable (as of 2026-10-10).2228

Hokutetsu's Kanazawa to Gokayama to Shirakawa-go to Takayama bus is seat-reserved for every passenger, and bookings open on the same date one month before travel (as of 2026-10-10).4 Alpico's Matsumoto to Takayama express bus, which runs via Sawando and Hirayu Onsen, has been reservation-only since 2024-04-01 with the same one-month booking window, and its current timetable runs to 2026-11-15 (as of 2026-10-10).15

For how highway and local buses work in general, see Highway Buses: The Budget Alternative to the Shinkansen and Local Buses: Getting Around in Rail-Sparse Regions.

The Classic Tokyo, Alps, Kanazawa, and Kyoto Loop

The classic central Japan itinerary is the Kanazawa, Takayama, and Shirakawa-go route, run as a one-way traverse between Tokyo and Kansai or as a loop out of either end. Itineraries and guides on JNTO's site run it in both directions, and the choice mostly follows where you enter.1214

Which Direction to Run It

From Tokyo, the Shinkansen-first direction is the natural one: the Nagano, Kanazawa, Takayama and Shirakawa-go guide on JNTO's site runs Nagano, then Kanazawa, then Shirakawa-go, then Takayama.14 From Nagoya, JNTO's "Nagoya, Takayama and Kanazawa" itinerary runs the other way: Takayama first, then Shirakawa-go, then Kanazawa.12

At the Kansai end, any leg between Kanazawa and Kyoto or Osaka includes the Tsuruga change.10 JNTO's "Old Japan: Kanazawa to Kyoto" itinerary still describes a direct Thunderbird from Kanazawa to Kyoto, a service that ended in March 2024, so use it for stop order only.1029

The decision tree below sums up the direction choice.

Short Loop vs. Full Loop

Itineraries and guides on JNTO's site are the clearest anchors for day counts. Treat them as ranges, not rules.

JNTO itinerary or guideStopsLength
Nagoya, Takayama and KanazawaNagoya, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa5 days12
Old Japan: Kanazawa to KyotoTakayama, Shirakawa-go, Gokayama (Ainokura), Kanazawa, Kyoto6 days29
Guide to Nagano, Kanazawa, Takayama and ShirakawagoNagano 1–3 days; Kanazawa 1–2 days; Shirakawa-go and Takayama 2–3 days combinedPer-stop ranges14

Adding up the per-stop ranges in the Nagano guide gives roughly 4 to 8 days; that total is simple arithmetic, not a JNTO figure.14 A separate JNTO guide recommends at least 1 to 2 days in Kanazawa, a day trip or overnight in Shirakawa-go, and at least half a day in Takayama.6

A short loop covers Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, and Takayama. A full loop adds Matsumoto or Nagano and, in season, a day on the Alpine Route or in Kamikochi, both of which only operate from spring to November (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current dates with the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and the Kamikochi official site).39 For how much fits into a single day, see How Many Things Can You Actually Do in a Day? A Realistic Pacing Framework.

Luggage on a Multi-Stop Mountain Loop

Bus legs are where large bags cause trouble. Nohi Bus allows free carry-on inside the bus up to 10 kg in total, 0.027 cubic meters, and 1 meter long; highway buses and some sightseeing route buses have an under-floor trunk, but passengers are asked to keep luggage to a minimum (as of 2026-10-10).30 These are Nohi Bus's limits; other operators set their own.

At Shirakawa-go, coin lockers in the bus terminal and a nearby luggage-storage service take bags; when both are full, the Tourist Association stores luggage from 8:00 to 17:00, same-day drop-off and pick-up only (as of 2026-10-10).31

Forwarding large bags between hotels, or straight to the Kansai end, keeps bus days to a day bag. See Luggage Forwarding in Japan: How Takkyubin Courier Services Work, and Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes for passes and sample loops.

The Season Question

Season decides which parts of the region you can reach. The table shows the 2026 boundaries; every date is set by the operator or organizer named in the subsections (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current dates with the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kamikochi official site, and the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).

Winter: Snow Country and Closed Alpine Roads

Hokuriku winters bring frequent cloudy, snowy, or rainy days under the winter monsoon pattern. Heavy snow builds along the mountains and reaches the plains when upper-air cold is strong.5

The Alpine Route's 2026 operating period runs from 2026-04-15 to 2026-11-30, so it is closed through winter (as of 2026-01-28).3 Kamikochi's access road is likewise closed off-season; for 2026 it reopened on 2026-04-17 (as of 2026-04-17).32

Shirakawa-go's winter light-up is the main seasonal event, and its rules apply only to this event in Shirakawa Village. The 2027 edition runs on 2027-01-11, 2027-01-17, 2027-01-24, and 2027-01-31 from 17:30 to 19:30, under a full advance-reservation and entry-ticket system with no tickets sold on the day (as of 2026-09-02).13

There are five ways in: an overnight stay in the village, a reserved parking space reached by private car, a reserved parking space reached by taxi, a route-bus operator's tour, or a travel agency's bus tour (as of 2026-09-02).13 On light-up days the last regular buses leave before the event starts, and Nohi Bus states there is no route bus back to Takayama afterwards; bookings for its light-up bus tours open in stages from 2026-10-13, one opening date per event night (as of 2026-10-10).1337

No same-day entry to the Shirakawa-go light-up

Arriving on the day without a lodging, parking, or tour reservation does not get you in, and regular buses do not cover the event hours (as of 2026-09-02).13 Details are in Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages and Sites in Japan That Require Advance Booking.

Spring: Alpine Openings and April Cherry Blossoms

The Alpine Route opened for 2026 on 2026-04-15 (as of 2026-01-28).3 Kamikochi's private-car regulation began on 2026-04-17, and its season-opening ceremony was held on 2026-04-27 (as of 2026-03-23).938

This article does not give dates for the Alpine Route's snow-wall walk; check the operator's site before planning around it. In Takayama, cherry blossoms around Nakabashi bridge are at their best in mid to late April, per Gifu's official tourism site (as of 2026-10-10).33

Summer and Early Autumn: The Alpine Window

Summer is when both the Alpine Route and Kamikochi are reliably operating (as of 2026-10-10).39 It is also when the Alpine Route is busiest.

The operator warns that at peak hours passengers may not be able to board their preferred service, and asks visitors to plan flexibly (as of 2026-04-14).34 It also notes limited daily express-bus departures on the Nagano side and congestion from construction on the Omachi Alpine Line (as of 2026-04-14).34

For hiking, see Hiking in Japan: Trail Grades, Seasons, and Mountain Huts; for wildlife precautions, see Bear Safety in Japan for Hikers and Rural Travelers.

Autumn: Foliage and Crowd Peaks

紅葉 (kōyō, "autumn foliage") on the Alpine Route starts in September and moves down in elevation through November. The operator places the peak at Murodo from mid-September to early October, and at Daikanbo and Kurobe-daira from early to mid-October (as of 2026-10-10).35

The season ends in November. Kamikochi's 2026 season closes on 2026-11-15 (as of 2026-10-06), and the Alpine Route closes on 2026-11-30 (as of 2026-01-28).336 For foliage timing elsewhere in the country, see Koyo Forecasting and Regional Timing in Japan.

Good to know

Reserve the Bus Legs Before the Rail Legs

Hokutetsu's Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, and Takayama route and Alpico's Matsumoto to Takayama bus are both reservation-only, and both open bookings on the same date one month before travel (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current details with each operator).415 The highway-bus leg of Nohi Bus's Centrair to Takayama combination ticket works the same way (as of 2026-10-10).21

On the Alpine Route, the operator's web ticket lets you pick a boarding time at the entry station, subject to remaining capacity (as of 2026-10-10).39 Book these scarce legs first, then fit the trains around them.

Nohi Bus's own Takayama to Shirakawa-go pages disagree on which departures need a reservation (as of 2026-10-10), so check its Japanese timetable rather than assuming a rule from another operator.2228

Rail Disruptions and Substitute Buses

JR Central suspended the Takayama Line between Sugihara and Inotani from 2026-03-18 for bridge repairs, with substitute buses covering the gap.4041 It announced resumption from the first train on 2026-05-30, and Hida City expected normal service from 2026-06-01 (as of 2026-05-27).4041

JR Central posts service changes on its conventional-line status page and social-media accounts (as of 2026-05-26).40 JR West's English Train Status Information covers conventional lines in Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, and parts of Niigata and Nagano from 6:00 to midnight, and reports delays of 15 minutes or more (as of 2026-10-10).42

Cash and IC Cards on Rural Buses

Payment rules are each operator's own. Nohi Bus route buses do not currently accept smartphone payment, credit cards, or transit IC cards on board, only cash (as of 2026-10-10).30

Hokutetsu's reserved Shirakawa-go and Takayama route takes credit cards for online bookings, with mobile or printed web tickets (as of 2026-10-10).4 Alpico's ticket windows accept credit cards for most ticket types; its page does not state IC-card acceptance (as of 2026-10-10).15

Rail is moving the other way: from 2026-03-14, every station on JR West's Johana and Himi lines in Toyama Prefecture accepts transit IC cards (as of the 2026-03-14 timetable).11 For the national picture, see Is Japan Still a Cash-Only Country?

Accommodation Taxes Differ by Town

Several towns on the loop charge a 宿泊税 (shukuhakuzei, "accommodation tax"), each under its own rules. Kanazawa and Takayama charge per guest per night, not per room.4344 Rates below are dated in the As of column (as of 2026-10-10).

Nagano Prefecture lists Matsumoto, Karuizawa, Achi, Hakuba, and Nozawa Onsen as levying their own accommodation tax and says the amount may differ there, so check each municipality's page (as of 2026-07-21).47 In Matsumoto, the combined city-plus-prefecture amount equals the prefectural ¥200, split ¥100 each (as of 2025-07-16).48

Other stops on the loop are not listed here because their status was not confirmed; check each municipality before assuming either way, and see Japan's Accommodation Tax, City by City.

The Noto Peninsula After the 2024 Earthquake

Ishikawa's official tourism site says the Kaga area, including Kanazawa, has largely returned to normal daily life (as of 2026-02).49 Suzu, Wajima, Noto, Anamizu, Shika, and Nanao were severely damaged and need extended recovery, while Nakanoto, Hakui, and Hodatsushimizu have several facilities accepting general tourists (as of 2026-02).49

Many Noto lodgings accept general tourists, some prioritize recovery workers, and the prefecture asks visitors to contact lodgings directly (as of 2026-02).49 The Kanazawa City Tourism Association reports that travel times to Oku-Noto are now almost the same as before the earthquake, though some closures and detours remain (as of 2026-08).50 Kanazawa: Gardens, Geisha Districts, and Crafts covers visiting Noto from Kanazawa.

Regional Passes Are for Visitors, and the Math Is Route-Specific

JR West's Hokuriku Area Pass requires a passport issued by a foreign government and entry as a 短期滞在 (tanki taizai, "Temporary Visitor") (as of 2026-10-10).51 It covers Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui, and on the Hokuriku Shinkansen only between Tsuruga and Kurobe-Unazukionsen, not toward Tokyo (as of 2026-10-10).51

Whether any pass pays depends on your exact loop. Prices and comparisons are in Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes and Regional and Area Rail Passes: Alternatives to the Nationwide JR Pass.
