Chubu and Hokuriku Logistics: Passes, Buses, and Loop Routes
Chubu and Hokuriku logistics start from one fact: the Tokaido Shinkansen runs to Nagoya and Kyoto, while Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, and the Japanese Alps sit on a ring of other rail lines with gaps that only highway buses fill.123 With four overlapping passes on sale and bus reservation rules that differ by operator, the pass you pick and the order you book in decide what a central Japan rail pass actually saves you.
Fees, rules, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at JR West's, JR East's, and JR Central's official pass pages (touristpass.jp for the Takayama-Hokuriku and Alpine passes) and on each bus operator's own site.
Overview
This article is for travelers adding a Kanazawa and Takayama detour on a Tokyo to Kanazawa to Kyoto route, and for repeat visitors building a loop that starts and ends in central Japan. It covers which pass fits which loop, how to book the bus legs, how to move luggage, and what changes in winter.
If you have not chosen your stops yet, start with Chubu and Hokuriku Orientation: Japan's Mountain Heartland. This article assumes the towns are set and deals with getting between them.
The rail ring and the bus gaps
Four rail corridors carry most long-distance travel in the region:
- Hokuriku Shinkansen: Tokyo to Tsuruga, via Nagano, Toyama, and Kanazawa.41
- JR Takayama Line: the 特急 (tokkyū, "limited express") Hida runs from Nagoya to Takayama and on to Toyama.5
- JR Chuo Main Line: the Limited Express Shinano runs from Nagoya to Matsumoto and Nagano.67
- Tokaido Shinkansen: Tokyo to Nagoya, Kyoto, and Shin-Osaka, with the Limited Express Thunderbird linking Kyoto and Osaka to Tsuruga.412
Nagoya to Takayama takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes on the Hida (as of October 2026; confirm current timetables and fares with JR Central, JR West, and the bus operators).8
Two gaps have no rail at all. Shirakawa-go is reached only by express bus: about 50 minutes from Takayama Station, about 1 hour 20 minutes from Kanazawa or Toyama Station, and about 2 hours 30 minutes from Nagoya Station (as of October 2026).3 Takayama to Matsumoto runs by an express bus that Nohi Bus and ALPICO Kotsu operate jointly via Hirayu Onsen, taking 2 hours 20 minutes (as of October 2026).9
The map below shows how the corridors and the bus gaps fit together. Solid lines are rail; dotted lines are bus-only links.
A few ticket terms recur on every pass page and bus timetable for the region:
| Term | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 特急 | tokkyū | Limited express train, such as the Hida, Shinano, or Thunderbird |
| 高速バス | kōsoku basu | Highway or express bus |
| 指定席 | shiteiseki | Reserved seat10 |
| 自由席 | jiyūseki | Non-reserved seat10 |
The Tsuruga transfer since March 2024
The Hokuriku Shinkansen extension from Kanazawa to Tsuruga opened on 16 March 2024.11 Since then, the transfer between the Thunderbird and the Shinkansen has been at Tsuruga, not Kanazawa, so Kanazawa to Kyoto or Osaka means Shinkansen to Tsuruga, then Thunderbird.4
Any guide that describes a direct Thunderbird from Kanazawa to Kyoto predates this change. The old conventional Hokuriku Line between Tsuruga and Kanazawa passed to third-sector operators, Hapi-Line Fukui and IR Ishikawa Railway, on the same date.4
For a single Kansai to Hokuriku trip without a pass, JR West sells a visitor-only HOKURIKU One-way Ticket covering this Thunderbird and Shinkansen combination: ¥6,500 from Kyoto City to Kanazawa and ¥8,000 from Osaka City to Kanazawa (as of October 2026).12 It is sold as an e-ticket through overseas travel agencies, requires Temporary Visitor status, and becomes invalid if you get off at an intermediate station.12
Regional Passes Compared
Four passes on sale fit this region, and their coverage overlaps only partly; a fifth, the Shoryudo bus pass, is not on sale (as of 2026-10-11; see its section below). For how area passes work in general, see Regional and Area Rail Passes: Alternatives to the Nationwide JR Pass; this section compares only the options that matter here.
Prices in the table come from each issuer's own pass page (as of October 2026; confirm current figures with JR West, JR Central's touristpass.jp, and JR East).121314 The Hokuriku Arch Pass price applies to passes sold from 14 March 2026.10

Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass
JR Central and JR West's joint pass is valid for 5 consecutive days and covers JR trains from Nagoya to Toyama via the Takayama Line, Tsuruga to Kyoto and Osaka, and Osaka to Kansai Airport.2 On the Hokuriku Shinkansen it covers only non-reserved seats in ordinary cars between Toyama and Tsuruga, a stretch that includes Kanazawa; the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka is excluded.2
Reserved seats on JR limited expresses and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are free up to 6 times (as of October 2026).2 You can buy the pass online up to one month ahead (as of October 2026), through travel agents outside Japan, or at station ticket offices in Japan.2
The pass also covers three bus lines, which is what sets it apart for a Takayama and Shirakawa-go trip (as of October 2026):2
| Bus line | Section | Operators |
|---|---|---|
| Takayama to Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa or Toyama | Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa or Toyama | Nohi, Hokutetsu, Meitetsu, Toyama Chitetsu |
| Takayama to Shirakawa-go to Takaoka | Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Shirakawa-go, Shin-Takaoka | Nohi, Kaetsuno, Dolphin Traffic |
| World Heritage Bus | Shirakawa-go to Shin-Takaoka Station | Kaetsuno |
touristpass.jp describes the Takayama to Kanazawa line as covered end to end, "with some exceptions; reservations required."2 The Takaoka line and its operators were added from 16 March 2024, alongside the Tsuruga extension.4
JR West's release describes the covered highway buses as requiring "advance telephone reservations," with the exception of some buses (as of January 2024).4 japan-guide.com adds that the reservation is free and can be made by phone or at the bus terminal (as of March 2024).17 No official source describes booking a pass-covered seat through an online bus site, so plan the call before your travel day.
Eligibility is narrower than the price table suggests. touristpass.jp's usage guide, stamped up to date as of July 2021, limits the pass to travelers with a passport issued outside Japan who can show a "Temporary Visitor" stamp or seal at issuance; travelers who entered through automated gates should ask staff for one.18 JR West's January 2024 release states the same Temporary Visitor requirement for this pass.4
The same guide states that there is no refund or extension for train cancellations or delays, and no reissue if the pass is lost (as of July 2021).18
Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass
This 5-day pass costs ¥24,500, and that price includes the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route: touristpass.jp lists "all transportations of the Alpine Route" between Dentetsu-Toyama and Shinano-Omachi as covered (as of October 2026).13 The Alpine Route fare is not an add-on on top of the pass price. japan-guide.com gives the same ¥24,500 (as of February 2026).19
The rail part forms a ring: JR trains from Nagoya to Takayama and Toyama, Toyama Chiho Railway on the Alpine Route approach, then JR from Shinano-Omachi through Matsumoto back to Nagoya.13 Reserved seats on JR conventional lines are free up to 4 times (as of October 2026).13
Apart from the Alpine Route's own transport, the pass lists no bus services. The Takayama to Matsumoto express bus and the Kamikochi buses are paid separately, even though they run through the same area.13
The pass is sold and used only in season. The 2026 windows (as of October 2026):13
| Window | 2026 dates |
|---|---|
| Sales through overseas agents | 2026-02-01 to 2026-11-06 |
| Sales online and in Japan | 2026-03-15 to 2026-11-06 |
| Exchange | 2026-03-15 to 2026-11-06 |
| Use | 2026-04-15 to 2026-11-10 |
The 2027 season dates were not yet published on the pass page as of October 2026.13
For the Tateyama to Ogizawa section, holders take the pass to the counter at Tateyama or Ogizawa Station to receive a boarding pass.13 japan-guide.com notes that pass holders cannot use the reservation system for the cable car from Tateyama, which it calls "a big disadvantage on busy days" (as of February 2026).19
If your trip is cancelled because any Alpine Route transport is suspended, touristpass.jp's usage guide offers a refund without fees at the JR Central counter that issued the pass, but not if you continue traveling (as of July 2021).20 The same guide carries the Temporary Visitor stamp-or-seal requirement used for the Takayama-Hokuriku pass (as of July 2021).20 For the Alpine Route crossing itself, see The Japanese Alps: Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Hokuriku Arch Pass
JR West's January 2026 release raised the 7-day Hokuriku Arch Pass from ¥30,000 to ¥35,000, child half price, for passes sold from 14 March 2026 (as of January 2026).10 JR West's and JR East's own pass pages show ¥35,000 adult and ¥17,500 child (as of October 2026).115 This is the second increase in two years: the price went from ¥24,500 to ¥30,000 for passes sold from 16 March 2024.4
The pass runs 7 consecutive days, from 0:00 on the first day to 24:00 on the last day, Japan time (as of October 2026).1 It links Tokyo and Osaka through Kanazawa and Tsuruga, covering:115
- Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Tokyo, including reserved seats.
- Joetsu Shinkansen between Takasaki and Tokyo, and Tohoku and Yamagata Shinkansen between Omiya and Tokyo.
- Limited expresses including the Thunderbird and Haruka, plus rapid and local trains on JR West and JR East lines in the area.
- Tokyo Monorail to Haneda, and JR links to Narita Airport and Kansai Airport.
- Full-segment trips only on IR Ishikawa Railway (Kanazawa to Tsubata), Ainokaze Toyama Railway (Toyama to Takaoka), and Hapi-Line Fukui (Echizen-Hanando to Fukui).
The Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are excluded, and Green cars, sleeper cars, and GranClass need separate tickets.115 Neither pass page lists any bus (as of October 2026).115
The 2026 revision also widened the free area. JR West's release lists the additions as 「信越エリア(松本方面等)、舞鶴線、小浜線」: the Shinetsu area ("toward Matsumoto, etc."), the Maizuru Line, and the Obama Line (as of January 2026).10 Neither English pass page names Matsumoto in its text, so check the coverage map on the pass page before counting on any specific Shinetsu section.
On JR West's coverage maps, the Takayama Line appears inside the free area only as far as Inotani, so plan to pay separately for any rail leg into Takayama.104 Buy the pass through JR-WEST Online Train Reservation, JR-EAST Train Reservation, or an overseas travel agency, then pick it up at a main JR West or JR East station in the area (as of January 2026).10 Station sales in Japan ended in March 2024.4
Eligibility is limited to holders of a foreign-government passport entering with Temporary Visitor status (as of October 2026).10115
Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass and the nationwide JR Pass
The Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass costs ¥19,000 for 7 days (as of October 2026).14 It covers Kansai, Fukui, Ishikawa, and Toyama, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Joetsumyoko, but not the Tokaido Shinkansen.414 JR West's January 2026 release did not list it among the revised products.10
It fits a Kansai-based trip that adds Kanazawa without going to Takayama, since its coverage does not reach Takayama and includes no Takayama bus.414 Reservations open one month before travel through JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION, and the pass is limited to foreign-government passport holders entering as Temporary Visitors; Japanese nationals are excluded, including those with permanent residency abroad (as of October 2026).14
The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers JR Shinkansen (except Nozomi and Mizuho), limited express, and local trains, so the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the Hida, and the Shinano are all in scope (as of October 2026).21 It also allows pass-through travel on the IR Ishikawa, Ainokaze Toyama, and Hapi-Line Fukui sections above.
Its scope page excludes JR Bus express routes and lists no non-JR bus operator or Alpine Route transport, so plan to pay separately for Nohi, Hokutetsu, and ALPICO buses and for the Alpine Route.21 For its price and eligibility, see Is the JR Pass Still Worth It? The Post-2023 Price-Hike Math.
The Shoryudo bus pass
The Shoryudo bus pass was a bus-only regional ticket. Meitetsu's 2023 release describes it as a set combining free-ride tickets on express and local buses between Chubu and Hokuriku tourist bases with airport-access tickets, offered to foreign travelers, with a smartphone ticket from April 2023 (as of March 2023).16
The pass is not on sale (as of 2026-10-11). The sales site named in Meitetsu's 2023 release no longer loaded as of October 2026, and the reseller KKday lists the product as sold out and states that there are no sales plans for it after the end of June 2025 (as of 2026-10-11).1622 japan-guide.com's pass page also carries a notice that sales appear to have ended in 2025.23
The end-of-June 2025 date comes from that reseller; no official end-of-sales notice from Meitetsu was found (as of 2026-10-11). Price the bus legs in this region at regular point fares instead.
When Each Pass Pays Off
A pass pays off only when the regular single fares for the legs you actually ride add up to more than the pass price. Work it out for your own route:
- List every leg of your trip in order, including bus legs.
- Price each leg at its regular one-way fare. For JR legs, use the fare search on the JR operator's website or a route-search app.
- Add up only the legs the pass covers, within its consecutive-day window.
- Compare that total with the pass price. Legs the pass does not cover cost the same either way.
Use regular fares for this. Visitor-only products such as the HOKURIKU One-way Ticket, and multi-ticket books, are alternatives to a pass, not a measure of what a pass saves.
The bus operators publish their regular fares, which can go straight into step 2. The fares below are the operators' regular adult fares (as of October 2026; confirm current fares with Nohi Bus, Hokutetsu, and ALPICO Kotsu).
Nohi Bus has announced higher fares on the Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, Toyama, and Takaoka line for rides from 2026-12-01, shown in the "From 2026-12-01 (Nohi)" column (as of 2026-10-11).2425 Hokutetsu's own pages still showed the current fares and no revision notice for the shared line (as of 2026-10-11).26
| Bus leg | Adult fare, one way | As of | From 2026-12-01 (Nohi) | Covered by Takayama-Hokuriku pass |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Takayama to Shirakawa-go | ¥2,800 | 2026-1027 | ¥2,9002425 | Yes |
| Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa | ¥2,800 | 2026-102726 | ¥2,9002425 | Yes |
| Takayama to Kanazawa | ¥4,200 | 2026-102726 | ¥4,4002425 | Yes |
| Takayama to Toyama | ¥3,800 | 2026-1027 | ¥3,90025 | Yes |
| Takayama to Shin-Takaoka | ¥3,300 | 2026-1027 | ¥3,40025 | Yes |
| Takayama to Matsumoto | ¥4,400 | 2026-10928 | No change announced | No |
For a worked example from the issuer itself, JR East puts a Narita Airport to Kanazawa to Nagano to Narita Airport loop at approximately ¥38,000 in regular fares, against ¥35,000 for the Hokuriku Arch Pass (as of October 2026).15 Your own margin depends on how many legs you ride inside the 7 days.
This article groups common loops in the region into five shapes, and each shape points to one starting option.12131427
| Loop shape | Starting option | Not covered |
|---|---|---|
| Nagoya in, Kansai out, via Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa | Takayama-Hokuriku pass | Tokaido Shinkansen |
| Tokyo in, Kansai out, via Kanazawa | Hokuriku Arch Pass | All buses, including Kanazawa to Takayama |
| Kansai round trip to Kanazawa only | Kansai-Hokuriku pass | Takayama and its buses |
| Alpine Route crossing in season | Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass | Buses outside the Alpine Route, including Takayama to Matsumoto |
| Takayama base with mostly bus day trips | Point bus fares | Rail legs |
The decision tree below runs the same logic. It narrows you to one candidate, which you then test with the fare total above.
Reserved Highway Buses
Buses close the two gaps in the rail ring, and most of them need a reservation. For how highway buses work in general, see Highway Buses: The Budget Alternative to the Shinkansen; for numbered-ticket local buses, see Local Buses: Getting Around in Rail-Sparse Regions.
The Takayama, Shirakawa-go, and Kanazawa line
Reservation rules on this line depend on which company runs your bus. Nohi Bus's timetable marks most through runs to Kanazawa as 予約制 (yoyakusei, "reservation required") and some as non-reserved (as of October 2026; confirm with Nohi Bus and Hokutetsu).27 Hokutetsu states that all of its highway buses require seat reservations made in advance.26
Nohi lists 16 round-trip services a day (as of October 2026).27 Takayama to Shirakawa-go takes about 50 minutes, Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa about 1 hour 20 minutes, and Takayama to Kanazawa an estimated 2 hours 15 minutes (as of October 2026).27263
In Kanazawa, Hokutetsu's buses board at Kanazawa Station's West Gate, and the driver is the only staff on board (as of October 2026).26 The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association also lists a direct bus from Nagoya Station at about 2 hours 30 minutes (as of October 2026), and Meitetsu Bus and Hokuriku Railroad began jointly running a Nagoya to Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa line in February 2023.163 Check that line's current timetable with the operators before relying on it.
Nohi Bus warns that "delays of two hours or more can occur due to traffic from waiting for private car parking at Shirakawa-go, heavy snowfall, or expressway closures" (as of October 2026).27 Avoid booking a tight onward train or a non-refundable connection straight after a Shirakawa-go bus.
For the village itself, see Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages.
Takayama to Matsumoto and the Kamikochi connection
Nohi Bus and ALPICO Kotsu jointly run the Takayama to Matsumoto express bus via Hirayu Onsen; some stop locations change by season.9 Reservations have been required since 1 April 2024, by phone to the Nohi Bus Reservation Center (0577-32-1688, 9:00–17:00) or online at highwaybus.com (as of October 2026).9
ALPICO adds an exception for short trips between Hirayu Onsen, Takayama Bus Center, and Shin-Hotaka Ropeway: same-day boarding is possible if seats are free, but those sections cannot be reserved in advance.28 Bookings open up to one month before boarding (as of October 2026).28
Nohi's timetable lists departures from Takayama at 6:50, 7:50, 11:50, 13:50, 14:50, and 16:50, plus one extra run starting at Shin-Hotaka Ropeway at 11:30 on 8–16 August 2026 and 29 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 only (as of October 2026).9 ALPICO's green-season timetable runs 1 April to 15 November 2026 (as of October 2026).28 Its 2026–27 winter timetable was still marked in preparation; the previous winter season ran 1 December 2025 to 31 March 2026.29
ALPICO's winter-season page states that there is no restroom on board and that the bus makes one restroom stop at Hirayu Onsen.29 None of the JR pass pages cited in this article lists this bus.1152131421
Kamikochi restricts private cars year-round, so from the Gifu side you reach it by bus or taxi from Hirayu Onsen.30 Nohi's Kamikochi line operates 17 April to 15 November 2026, at ¥1,500 one way or ¥2,800 round trip from Hirayu Onsen, with no reservation needed (as of October 2026).30 For Kamikochi itself, see The Japanese Alps: Kamikochi and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
Booking channels and pass-holder reservations
Paying passengers on the Shirakawa-go line can book through Japan Bus Online, a multilingual bus booking site that both Nohi and Hokutetsu name; Hokutetsu lists it as available 24 hours a day (as of October 2026).2726 Phone lines include Nohi at 0577-32-1688 (9:00–17:00) and Hokutetsu at 076-234-0123 (8:00–18:00 daily; as of October 2026).2726 Nohi also sells mobile tickets for its non-reserved buses.27
Takayama to Matsumoto seats are booked by phone or through highwaybus.com.928
Pass holders are a separate case. For the Takayama-Hokuriku pass, JR West describes the covered buses as needing advance telephone reservations (as of January 2024), and no source describes booking a zero-fare pass seat through Japan Bus Online.4
Luggage Strategy for Multi-Stop Loops
Bus legs and village stops make large suitcases awkward on this route. For courier fees and the full procedure, see Luggage Forwarding in Japan: How Takkyubin Courier Services Work; this section covers how to fit forwarding to a central Japan loop.
Forward ahead by one or two nights
Yamato Transport's 宅急便 (takkyūbin, "door-to-door parcel delivery"), sold in English as TA-Q-BIN, is sent from a hotel, airport, or tourist facility by applying at that facility's counter; advance reservations cannot be made (as of October 2026; confirm with Yamato Transport).31 Yamato's delivery-time standards do not count the day of shipping, can differ by area, and may run longer in bad weather.32
That makes sending a bag two stops ahead the practical pattern on this route. Ship it past the Shirakawa-go night or the Alpine Route crossing, carry a day pack, and check Yamato's delivery-time page for your actual origin and destination.32
Whether a 旅館 (ryokan, "traditional inn"), 民宿 (minshuku, "family-run guesthouse"), gassho farmhouse, or other guesthouse accepts a forwarded parcel, and from what date, is each property's own policy, not a regional rule. Ask the receiving property before you ship; even Kanazawa's hands-free service, below, cannot deliver to properties without a front desk.33
Same-day hands-free service at Kanazawa Station
Kanazawa Station has a same-day baggage delivery counter, the Hands-Free Travel counter on the left side of the Kanazawa Station Tourist Information Centre, open 8:30–20:00 (as of October 2026).33 The Japanese label behind such services is 手ぶら観光 (tebura kankō, "hands-free sightseeing").33
Delivery is same-day, but you cannot choose a delivery time.33 It reaches Kanazawa City, the Noto area, the Kaga hot springs, and hotels and inns in Awara City in Fukui, and it cannot deliver to inns or guesthouses without a front desk, such as whole-house rentals.33
The counter takes credit cards, transport IC cards, and e-money, and asks groups to consult at least 10 days ahead (as of October 2026).33 The service page does not state a per-bag fee, so confirm it at the counter. This is a Kanazawa Station tourist-center service, not a region-wide offer, so do not assume the same service exists elsewhere on your loop.
Bus holds and village storage
Suitcases go in the highway bus's luggage hold, but Nohi notes that the trunk is shared and that it may be unable to take large items.27 Passengers load their own bags, and mobile batteries must stay with you in the cabin.27
At Shirakawa-go, the coin lockers at the Shirakawago Bus Terminal cost ¥500 per use for small and medium boxes and ¥1,000 for large ones, available 8:00–17:00 (as of October 2026).34 A luggage storage service next to the terminal also operates until 17:00.34
Both the terminal lockers and the storage service next to the terminal close at 17:00.34 If your onward bus leaves later, collect your bag before closing, or forward it ahead so you are not carrying it around the village.
For station fallbacks elsewhere on the loop, see Coin Lockers: Sizing, Cost, and the Real Risk of None Available.
Sample Loops: 4, 6, and 8 Days
Each loop below is a skeleton: the order of stops, night counts, the matching pass, and the main booking pinch point. Fill in sightseeing time to suit.
Four days: Nagoya to Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, and Kansai
Every leg of this loop sits inside the Takayama-Hokuriku pass, and its 5 consecutive days leave a day to spare (as of October 2026; confirm with JR Central and JR West).2
| Day | Route | Night | Covered by Takayama-Hokuriku pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nagoya to Takayama on the Hida | Takayama | Yes |
| 2 | Takayama | Takayama | Not needed |
| 3 | Bus Takayama to Shirakawa-go, then on to Kanazawa | Kanazawa | Yes, with a bus reservation |
| 4 | Kanazawa to Tsuruga on the Shinkansen, then Thunderbird to Kyoto or Osaka | Kansai | Yes (Shinkansen non-reserved seats) |
Nagoya to Takayama takes approximately 2 hours 20 minutes (as of October 2026).8 The pinch point is the day-3 bus seat, booked by telephone for pass holders.4
Six days: Tokyo to Kanazawa and Takayama, then Kansai
This loop uses the Hokuriku Arch Pass for the long rail legs and pays separately for the buses.115
| Day | Route | Night | Covered by Hokuriku Arch Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen | Kanazawa | Yes |
| 2 | Kanazawa | Kanazawa | Not needed |
| 3 | Bus Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go, then on to Takayama | Takayama | No (paid bus) |
| 4 | Takayama | Takayama | Not needed |
| 5 | Bus Takayama to Toyama, then Shinkansen to Tsuruga and Thunderbird to Kyoto or Osaka | Kansai | Bus no; rail yes |
| 6 | Depart from Kansai, including Kansai Airport by Haruka | None | Yes |
The bus legs cost ¥2,800 each for Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go and Shirakawa-go to Takayama, and ¥3,800 for Takayama to Toyama (as of October 2026).2726 Nohi's fares for rides from 2026-12-01 are ¥2,900, ¥2,900, and ¥3,900 (as of 2026-10-11).2425 The pinch point is the day-3 bus seat.
For a Matsumoto and Nagano detour, the Takayama to Matsumoto bus costs ¥4,400 and needs a reservation (as of October 2026).9 JR West's release adds the Shinetsu area ("toward Matsumoto, etc.") to the 2026 free area, so confirm on the pass's coverage map which onward sections from Matsumoto are covered before building the detour around it.10 See Matsumoto and Nagano: Castles, Temples, and Snow Monkeys for that leg.
Eight days: the Alpine ring (mid-April to November only)
The Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass covers a ring from Nagoya through Takayama, Toyama, the Alpine Route, Shinano-Omachi, and Matsumoto back to Nagoya.13 Because it lasts only 5 consecutive days, start it on the day you leave Takayama and pay the first Nagoya to Takayama leg separately.13
| Day | Route | Night | Covered by Alpine pass |

The spare day matters because the pass's own terms anticipate Alpine Route suspensions, offering a refund if one forces you to cancel the trip (as of July 2021).20 Forward your main bag from Toyama to Matsumoto around the crossing, allowing for Yamato's delivery standards, which do not count the shipping day.32
Season limits this loop. The Alpine Route opened 15 April 2026 and runs to 30 November 2026, but the pass can be used only until 10 November 2026 (as of October 2026).1335 The 2027 dates were not yet published as of October 2026.13
Continuing from Matsumoto to Nagano and Tokyo instead of returning to Nagoya takes you outside the pass's ring.13 The pinch point is the Alpine Route itself, where pass holders cannot use the Tateyama cable car's reservation system, a disadvantage japan-guide.com flags for busy days.19
Winter-Route Contingency
By the end of November the Alpine Route and the Kamikochi buses have closed for the season, and the bus links that keep running face snow delays. For ski-resort timing, see Planning a Ski or Snowboard Trip to Japan: Season Timing and Regional Choice.
What closes and what keeps running
The operating windows below come from each operator's own pages (as of October 2026; confirm current dates with the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, JR Central, Nohi Bus, and ALPICO Kotsu).

Buffers and a winter-safe loop
In winter, put the long legs on rail: the Hokuriku Shinkansen and the Hida carry the corridor, and Shirakawa-go becomes a daytime bus hop from Takayama or Kanazawa.45 Nohi's warning about snow and expressway delays applies most in these months, so leave slack between a Shirakawa-go bus and any onward train or flight.27
Check service status each morning on JR Central's conventional-line information page and JR West's English train information page, both of which the railways cite in their own notices.45 Parcels sent by courier can also arrive later than the standard in bad weather.32
Good to know
The Arch Pass now costs ¥35,000, not ¥30,000
The Hokuriku Arch Pass rose from ¥30,000 to ¥35,000 for passes sold from 14 March 2026 (as of October 2026; confirm with JR West or JR East).10115 It was ¥24,500 until March 2024, so any page quoting ¥30,000 or ¥24,500 predates a price change.4 Budget from JR West's or JR East's own pass page.
Passes need Temporary Visitor status
Every JR regional pass compared in this article is limited to holders of a foreign-government passport who entered Japan with 短期滞在 (tanki taizai, "Temporary Visitor") landing status.10411514 The rule depends on your landing status, not on which country issued your passport.
For the Takayama-Hokuriku and Alpine passes, touristpass.jp's usage guides ask you to show a passport with a Temporary Visitor stamp or seal at issuance, and tell travelers who entered through automated gates to ask staff for one (as of July 2021).1820
Pass holders can be shut out of reservations
Two passes limit how you book. Alpine pass holders cannot use the Tateyama cable car reservation system and collect a boarding pass at the Tateyama or Ogizawa counter instead (as of February 2026).1319
Takayama-Hokuriku pass holders reserve bus seats by telephone, or at the bus terminal according to japan-guide.com; neither source mentions an online option for pass holders (as of January 2024).417 Paying passengers, by contrast, can book online around the clock.26
The JR Takayama Line has a record of long suspensions
From 18 March 2026, JR Central suspended the Takayama Line between Sugihara and Inotani after finding scour at a bridge pier, cancelling Hida services between Takayama and Toyama with two listed exceptions; a replacement bus covered the gap.536 The trade publication railf.jp reported that service resumed from the first trains on 30 May 2026.37
It was not the first long closure: heavy rain in July 2020 cut the line, and JR Central reopened it in stages.38 Before you count on the Takayama to Toyama rail link, check JR Central's service information.5
The Shirakawa-go winter light-up is reservation-only
The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association states that visitors who arrive on the day without an advance reservation are not permitted to attend the light-up evenings (as of September 2026).39 See Takayama and Shirakawa-go: Edo-Era Streets and Gassho Villages for how entry works.
