Overview​

This guide compares the major journey-planning apps for daily resident use: Yahoo Norikae, Jorudan Norikae Annai (and its English Japan Transit Planner), NAVITIME, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and the JR East, JR West, and Tokyo Metro operator apps. It covers what each one searches, which languages it supports, what free and paid tiers include, and which two-app stack works for foreign residents.

A 乗換案内 (norikae annai, "transfer guide / route search") takes a departure point and a destination and returns timed routes with transfers, travel time, and fares.12 The 時刻表 (jikokuhyō, "timetable") and 運行情報 (unkō jōhō, "operation / service status information (delays, suspensions)") sitting behind it decide whether that answer survives contact with a delay.13

Major Japanese Route-Search Apps​

These three domestic planners compete on timetable depth, fare detail, and real-time disruption handling. All three are free to install, and each monetizes differently (as of 2026-09-08; confirm current figures with each publisher).124

Yahoo Norikae​

Yahoo!乗換案内 (Yahoo Norikae, "Yahoo transfer guide") is the LY Corporation (Yahoo! JAPAN) route-search app for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android.1 Its listing states that all listed functions are usable free of charge, with ads shown (as of 2026-09-08; confirm current figures with LY Corporation).1

Route search covers nationwide railways including conventional lines, limited expresses, and Shinkansen, plus airplanes, local buses, highway buses, and ferries, subject to supported stations and lines.1 Search accepts station names, bus stops, addresses, and facility names, and pairs train results with a walking-route map from the current location to the station for door-to-door guidance.15

Delay, suspension, service-change, construction, and resumption information is built in, with free push notifications for up to 10 registered lines after a free Yahoo! JAPAN ID login (as of 2026-09-08).1 Results show fare breakdowns (base fare plus limited-express charges), total travel distance, and 定期券 (teikiken, "commuter pass") fares including commuter and student variants.1

Save commuter routes as My Timetable entries

Registering a daily station timetable as a My Timetable entry (up to 20 entries) puts real-time delay and train-position status one tap away instead of inside a fresh route search each morning.3

Real-time train position and delay status also appears inside the timetable view for supported operators. The January 2024 supported rail set named JR East, Seibu, Odakyu, Tokyo Metro, and Toei Subway, plus listed bus operators across Tokyo, Kanagawa, Toyama, Fukui, and Okayama (as of 2024-01-12; confirm current figures with LY Corporation).3 The store listing cites a cumulative 60 million downloads with a 10M+ install tier on Google Play, and shows an update date of Sep 2, 2026 (as of 2026-09-08).1

Jorudan Norikae Annai​

Jorudan Co., Ltd. was founded in December 1979 as Jorudan Information Service and renamed in December 1989.6 Its Norikae Annai product was born as an electronic-book version in May 1993, published as a nationwide web version in April 1996, launched for mobile phones in December 1998, and launched as a smartphone app in December 2008.6

Japan Transit Planner is the multilingual version of that domestic Norikae Annai app, with the inbound service launched in May 2016.62 The listing states it holds timetables for all stations across Japan except some sections.2

Route, fare, and required-time search runs from departure to destination station, with nearest-station-from-current-location search and input history.2 A one-tap toggle switches between IC-card fare and ticket fare, and searches can consider Japan Rail Pass and Tokyo Subway Ticket coverage.2 Seat preferences (reserved, non-reserved, Green car), sort orders (less time, less fare, fewer transfers), station-numbering input and display, en-route timetables, and departure and destination weather round out the search screen.2

NAVITIME JAPAN was founded on March 1, 2000 and operates as a Tokyo-based navigation technology and services provider.7 Japan Travel by NAVITIME is its multilingual travel platform for visitors to Japan, covering navigation, transit information, destination info, and travel services.7

Listed languages total 13: English, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Indonesian, and Vietnamese (as of 2024-05-28; confirm current figures with NAVITIME JAPAN).7 Route search covers public transport including trains (JR and subway lines), airplanes, taxis, and ferries, with platform numbers, station lists, and timetables.4

A Japan Rail Pass mode shows the most efficient route for pass holders, and an interactive zoomable Tokyo-area map supports direct transit search.4 Up to 50 recently searched routes save for offline viewing, and offline spot search covers free Wi-Fi hotspots, currency exchange points, ATMs, tourist information centers, and stations.4

Japan Travel versus domestic Norikae NAVITIME

Japan Travel by NAVITIME is the inbound multilingual branch; the domestic resident-side counterpart is the separate Norikae NAVITIME app. Both share the NAVITIME routing engine but are distinct store listings, so install the one matching daily language needs.8

The English car-navigation function was substantially upgraded in May 2024 with real-time traffic, traffic-based rerouting, enlarged intersection images, and up to five route types covering recommended, toll, local-only, shortest-distance, and best-fuel-efficiency options (as of 2024-05-28).7 The listing shows a 1M+ install tier with an update date of Aug 13, 2026 (as of 2026-09-08).4

Global Map Apps​

Global map apps win on English-default interfaces, walking legs, and station exits. They lose on fare granularity and pass logic compared with the domestic planners above.

Google Maps​

Google Maps shows public-transport departures in app, with some transit stations on real-time departures and others on scheduled departures.9 Google Transit builds these results from participating agencies' static schedule feeds (stops, routes, schedules, fares) shared in GTFS form at no charge to the agency.10

For a resident this means major-city rail routes with transfers, fares, platform hints, and walking segments in one familiar interface, backed by secondary guides describing it as reliable for Tokyo and other major cities (as of 2026-09-08).1112 Treat any non-explicitly-live departure as scheduled, and verify disruptions, last trains, and pass coverage with the operator before critical trips.9

Downloaded offline areas orient within the downloaded area when connectivity drops, but transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable offline, and offline driving loses traffic and alternate routes.10

Do not plan transit offline on Google Maps

Download the home and office areas for orientation backup, but keep mobile data for actual train and walking routes. Fresh transit directions need a connection.10

Apple Maps​

Apple Maps added real-time transit information for the Tokyo metropolitan area on 2024-08-07, covering more than 20 rail, bus, and tram lines including services via JR East, Tokyo Metro, and ODPT (Public Transportation Open Data Council) providers, with no software update required (as of 2024-08-07; confirm current figures with Apple).13

Real-time updates include detailed timetables, live departures and arrivals, transfers, and suspension and delay notices whenever a transit route is planned.13 Apple Maps station pages attribute Japanese transit information to Jorudan Co., Ltd.13

Launch-day analysis noted an uneven operator rollout with JR East, Tokyo Metro, Toei, and Seibu visible first and other private operators to follow via the JR East real-time data platform, so coverage outside the supported set still reads as scheduled rather than live (limitation: single-analyst launch observation, not an Apple coverage statement).12

Operator-Specific Apps​

Operator apps trade nationwide comparison for depth inside one territory: live train positions, congestion, station maps, and direct booking. Use one alongside a national planner, not instead of it.

JR East App​

The JR East app is the official East Japan Railway Company app, with the listing stating over 14 million downloads (as of 2026-09-08; confirm current figures with East Japan Railway Company).14 Real-time train-location display covers JR East lines plus direct private railway and subway lines including Tokyo Metro, Tokyu, Odakyu, Keio, Seibu, Tobu, and Sotetsu, with delay and cancellation push notifications (as of 2026-09-08).14

Transfer search covers trains and buses nationwide, linked to timetables with delay-aware rerouting, including Shinkansen and limited-express search.14 Station maps, coin-locker availability, restroom and elevator info, per-car congestion on some lines such as the Yamanote Line, Suica balance and history via NFC hold, and Eki-net Shinkansen and limited-express reservation integration complete the commuter set.14

The listing updated Jul 30, 2026 with a 1M+ install tier (as of 2026-09-08).14 English-language Play reviews repeatedly report the UI as Japanese-only, with developer replies confirming Japanese-only support in 2023 threads, so treat it as a Japanese-first app with official English timetable sites as backup (as of 2026-09-08; review-based, not an official language specification).14

JR West App and Tokyo Metro App​

WESTER is the official West Japan Railway Company navigation app for timetables, route search, and operation information, with Shinkansen reservation, ICOCA integration, and WESTER points.15 The listing shows 1M+ installs with an update date of Apr 5, 2026 (as of 2026-09-08).15 JR West separately publishes English real-time train-status pages across the Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku, Sanyo Shinkansen, Hokuriku Shinkansen, and limited-express areas, plus an English Timetable and Route Finder.16

The Tokyo Metro my! app offers multimodal route search centered on the Tokyo metropolitan area, covering Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, the Sakura Tram, and the Nippori-Toneri Liner plus through-service railway lines, and combining subway and train legs with walking, bus, taxi, shared bicycle, and community bus options.17 It shows operation info, train positions, per-car real-time congestion on Tokyo Metro lines, in-station walking navigation, barrier-free facility info, and commuter-pass search (as of 2026-09-08; confirm current figures with Tokyo Metro).17 The listing updated Aug 19, 2026 with a 1M+ install tier (as of 2026-09-08).17 Tokyo Metro separately publishes an English subway map PDF and an English fare and transfer search.18

Keep the operator app for disruption mornings inside its territory and the national planner for everything crossing operators. One screen for status, one screen for comparison.141617

Foreign-Resident Strategy​

Run a two-app stack: Google Maps for English-default daily navigation plus Yahoo Norikae or Japan Transit Planner for deeper routes, fare detail, and real-time operation info.1112 Secondary comparison guides converge on this pairing because global maps handle exits and walking legs well while domestic planners handle fare basis and disruption detail better (limitation: secondary-guide recommendation pattern).1112

The setup below assumes an iPhone or Android phone with mobile data, and cites the primary capability behind each step.124

Install Google Maps plus Yahoo Norikae or Japan Transit Planner first, since Yahoo lists all functions free and Jorudan offers its multilingual branch from May 2016.162 Save home, office, and frequent stations in both apps, using NAVITIME-style favorites or Jorudan history where available.24 Set the fare basis (IC versus ticket) and any Rail Pass or subway-ticket mode before comparing prices.2 Register the commute timetable and delay push alerts (Yahoo: up to 10 lines after ID login; JR apps: registered-route push).114 Set up accounts and mobile data before the first commute, since fresh searches need connectivity on every app here.210

Good to know​

Last-train search deserves its own button​

Check the last-train condition explicitly on late nights instead of trusting a daytime route. Timetables switch across weekday, Saturday, and holiday schedules, and special trains on a given day display only under date-specified search.12 Yahoo and Jorudan both frame timetable search around date and train-type filtering for exactly this reason.12

Free tiers need live data so plan connectivity first​

Treat every route search as an online action. Jorudan states an internet connection is required apart from saved history, Google states transit, walking, and bicycling directions are unavailable offline, and NAVITIME offline covers saved routes and spot lists rather than fresh searches.2410 A pocket Wi-Fi or local eSIM beats hoping for station Wi-Fi during a disruption.

IC fare versus ticket fare changes the displayed price​

Toggle the fare basis before budgeting a commute. Japan Transit Planner switches IC-card versus ticket fare with one tap and the two can differ, while Yahoo shows fare breakdowns plus commuter-pass fares that also need the right basis selected.12 The 定期券 (teikiken, "commuter pass") fare is its own display mode, not a rounding of the single-trip fare.1

Station names are not unique so confirm the operator​

Confirm the operator and station numbering before tapping search. Jorudan supports station-numbering input and display precisely because similarly named stations exist across operators, and JR West advises copying the station name from its route map to avoid spelling-driven mis-searches.216
