Wise Japan Remittance: Sending Money To and From Japan
Wise Japan remittance covers inbound and outbound transfers between the rest of the world and Japanese bank accounts, priced at the mid-market rate with an explicit upfront fee.1 The difference that matters for a 1K-10K USD/EUR/GBP transfer is rarely the stated fee alone; it is the exchange rate the provider converts at, and that is where a documented comparison pays for itself.
Procedures, fees, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at the Wise Help Centre and the Wise Japan pricing pages.
Overview
Wise moves money through Wise Payments Japan K.K., licensed as a Type 1 and Type 2 Funds Transfer Service Provider with license number 00040 under the Kanto Local Finance Bureau.1 You set up a transfer, fund it from your own bank account or card, and Wise pays out from its local account on the receiving side.1
This article applies to anyone sending money in to or out of Japan, whether your Wise account is registered to a Japan address or you are sending from abroad to a Japanese bank account. The verification, JPY send-limit, and holding-limit rules below are stated at the national Wise Japan scope; they do not vary by ward office or nationality.234
How Wise Prices a Transfer
Wise converts at the mid-market rate, the rate you can check on Google, and charges an explicit fee on top rather than marking up the rate.15 Send-money and conversion fees vary by currency and start from 0.27 percent (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Wise).5 Later figures in this section carry the short date form only.
On the Japan inbound calculator, sending 1,000 USD cost 4.99 USD when funded from an existing Wise balance (as of 2026-09).1 The same 1,000 USD cost 7.26 USD by direct debit, 11.67 USD by bank transfer, and 17.81 USD by debit card (as of 2026-09).1 Credit card, Google Pay, and Apple Pay each cost 66.68 USD on the same amount (as of 2026-09).1
A practitioner calculation at early-February-2026 mid-market rates put Wise at about 600-700 JPY all-in on a 100,000 JPY Japan-to-US transfer, versus about 3,000 JPY flat plus about 2 percent selling-rate markup at Japan Post Bank online and 3,000-5,000 JPY flat plus 2-3 percent markup at megabanks online (as of 2026-02).6 The same comparison describes the typical all-in gap as about 1-4 percent of transfer value in Wise's favour versus most bank wires on typical transfers, which is a dated estimate rather than a guarantee (as of 2026-03).6
| Send 1,000 USD to Japan by | Transfer cost | As of |

The table above reflects Wise's own route calculator at fetch time; confirm current figures with Wise before comparing, since fees move by corridor and pay-in method. Transfers over 25,000 USD or equivalent attract a discounted fee (as of 2026-09).1
Set the same send amount in each provider's calculator and compare what the recipient actually receives. A provider stating no fee can still cost more through its exchange rate markup, which never appears as a fee line.1
Reading the Fee Before You Confirm
Wise shows the total fee, the exchange rate, the arrival estimate, and the recipient-gets figure before you confirm.1 Use that recipient-gets figure as the baseline when you price a bank wire or another app against Wise, holding the send amount constant.1
Standard transfer fees also apply to automatic withdrawals when an excess holding-limit balance is swept to your external account.4
Holding Yen in a Wise Account
A Wise account can hold a yen balance and send JPY out at any time, subject to a Japan-specific balance rule.24 Holding money in the account is stated as free (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Wise).5
If your Wise account address is registered in Japan, a default holding limit of 1 million JPY equivalent across all currencies and Jars applies under local regulations.24 Non-JPY holdings count toward the limit at the mid-market rate; Wise illustrates this with 500,000 JPY plus 5,000 USD at 135 JPY/USD totalling 1,175,000 JPY.4
You can set a temporary custom holding limit of up to 20 million JPY for up to six months, which resets automatically to the 1 million JPY default on the selected expiry date.4 A new, changed, increased, or decreased custom limit can only be set while you currently hold 1 million JPY or less across all currencies.4
While you are over the limit you can still send money and use the Wise card.4 After an email reminder you have 30 days to move the excess out manually or through a pre-registered external account; beyond 30 days Wise restricts the account until the excess leaves.4 That external account must be in your own name, denominated in JPY, EUR, SGD, USD, GBP, NZD, or AUD, and cannot be a Wise account.4

Sending Money To and From a Japanese Bank Account
JPY can be sent to any Japanese bank account domestically and through SWIFT, and to international accounts able to receive JPY through SWIFT where the amount is over 1 million JPY.2 JPY pay-ins to Wise can only come from banks within Japan, never by SWIFT.2 The name on the funding bank account must match your Wise profile name; third-party payments and cash deposits are rejected.2
The flow below is the same in both directions: fund locally, convert at mid-market, pay out locally.
For a Japan-registered address, send limits are up to 1 million JPY or equivalent from the Wise account balance, and up to 150 million JPY or equivalent using Send while paying from outside Wise such as a bank account or card.2 For an outside-Japan registered address paying to domestic Japan recipients, the limit is up to 150 million JPY per transfer regardless of pay-in route; over 1 million JPY to a SWIFT recipient in Japan goes SWIFT-only.2
Sending Money Into Japan
Inbound transfers pay out from Wise's local bank account, so the recipient needs no Wise account.1 For a domestic payout, provide the recipient's full account name (usually katakana, matching the bankbook exactly), the usually-7-digit account number, the account type (普通 futsū for savings/general, 貯蓄 chochiku for savings deposit, or 当座 tōza for checking/current), and the bank and branch name or code.2
For a SWIFT payout, provide the full Latin-alphabet account name, the SWIFT/BIC code, and the account number.2 Correspondent banks in between may deduct handling fees, and delivery takes longer than domestic routing.2 Wise recommends asking a JPY recipient for a domestic account for furikomi purposes wherever possible because the transfer is faster and cheaper than SWIFT.2
Sending Money Out of Japan
Outbound JPY transfers are funded by domestic bank transfer, debit card, or PayPay to Wise's Japan collection account; first-time senders complete identity verification during transfer setup.23 My Number collection at setup is required under the Act on Submission of Statement of Overseas Wire Transfers for Purpose of Securing Proper Domestic Taxation.3 JPY pay-ins by credit card are not accepted.2
Pay-in timing to Wise is usually 0-2 working days depending on method (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Wise).2 PayPay payments usually arrive instantly with same-business-day processing before 3pm JST, while payments to the MUFG collection account can take up to 2 business days (as of 2026-09).2 If you cancel, bank-transfer refunds take 1 working day while Japanese debit-card refunds usually take 5-10 working days and in some cases up to 1-2 months (as of 2026-09).2
A pay-in from another person's account is rejected, including joint-account edge cases that trigger extra verification. Send the furikomi from the account whose name matches your Wise profile.2
Verification Holds and Tenure Evidence
Identity and address verification is required before sending, receiving, or adding money on a Japan-registered account, and it starts automatically at the first such action.3 The name, date of birth, and address on your photo ID, your My Number document, and your Wise profile must all match exactly; update anything outdated before starting, since mismatched addresses are a common cause of delay.3
Accepted photo ID depends on residency status. Japanese nationals may use a My Number card, a driver's licence, or a passport issued before February 2020.3 Permanent residents may use a My Number card, a driver's licence, or a residence card.3 Long-term-stay visa holders may use a My Number card or a residence card.3
Passports issued in or after February 2020 are not accepted because they lack the address-bearing Information on Bearer page (所持人記入欄, shojisha kinyūran).3 My Number cards or notification slips stamped returned or moved-out are not accepted either.3 Where the My Number card is not your photo ID, provide one My Number document: a valid My Number card (front and back), a jūminhyō issued within the last 6 months showing the 12-digit My Number and requested without honseki details, or a My Number notification slip with current information.3
Verification uses a 4-digit code expiring after 30 minutes, photographed with the ID (front with the code paper below, a tilted thickness shot, and the back), plus a selfie holding the code; review usually takes one working day by email.3 Japan's strict KYC setting means occasional verification holds can interrupt even a smooth transfer history, though Wise publishes no general tenure-evidence schedule or volume threshold, so practitioner reports of requests after months of use should be read as a possibility rather than a rule.37
Moving out of Japan (国外転出, kokugai tenshutsu) ends eligibility for a Japan-registered account; update to the new country of residence and verify there where Wise is supported.3
Speed and Timing
On the Japan inbound calculator, funding from a Wise balance, by direct debit, debit card, credit card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay showed arrival in about 2 hours, while bank transfer showed arrival by Wednesday at fetch time (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Wise).1 Later figures in this section carry the short date form only.
Once Wise receives and converts JPY-bound money, arrival in the recipient's bank account usually takes 1 working day, while conversion itself can take up to 2 working days; SWIFT recipients take longer (as of 2026-09).2 JPY pay-in to Wise usually takes 0-2 working days, with weekend, holiday, late-night, or early-morning payments processing on the next business day (as of 2026-09).2
Every transfer shows a personalised time estimate at setup with a step-by-step tracker in the account; the chosen pay-in method or routine checks can move delivery off that estimate.17 Secondary resident guides describe typical major-currency delivery as one to two business days once the yen reaches Wise, which fits inside the official pay-in plus payout windows (as of 2026-05).8
Good to know
A bank wire quote hides most of its cost in the rate, not the fee
A practitioner calculation at early-February-2026 rates found that on 100,000 JPY to USD, a 2 percent selling-rate markup costs about 2,000 JPY in value before any flat fee is counted (as of 2026-02).6 Compare providers on the recipient-gets figure at the same send amount, not on the stated fee alone, because Wise converts at mid-market while banks convert at a marked-up selling rate.16
Verification documents must match exactly before the first transfer moves
Starting the first transfer with a mismatched name, birth date, or address across the photo ID, My Number document, and Wise profile causes verification delay, so update documents and profile first.3 Review usually takes one working day once documents are accepted, so a rejection restarts that clock.3
The 1 million JPY holding limit is a balance rule, not a transfer cap
Treating the 1 million JPY equivalent default holding limit as a per-transfer ceiling understates what can be moved.24 Larger amounts go through the Send route paying from outside the balance, up to 150 million JPY or equivalent for Japan-registered accounts, while the balance itself stays under the holding limit.2 Holding over the limit triggers the 30-day move-out-or-restrict sequence even though sending and card use keep working during the window.4
Tenure evidence can appear after months of smooth transfers
Practitioner sources describe occasional re-verification or tenure-evidence requests once volume or tenure crosses internal review thresholds, but Wise official Japan pages publish no general 6-12-month rule or threshold figure, so expect the possibility without planning around a specific number.37 Each transfer carries its own estimate and routine checks can extend delivery, so set up time-critical transfers ahead of the deadline.7
