Online Bank Alternatives for Foreign Residents

For a foreigner choosing an online bank in Japan, the shortlist is almost always the same three names: SBI Shinsei Bank, Sony Bank, and Rakuten Bank.123 Each one solves a different problem, and each one leaves a different gap that the other two do not cover.

Confirm current details with official sources

Procedures, fees, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at SBI Shinsei Bank, Sony Bank, or Rakuten Bank's official site.

Overview

These three banks are online alternatives to the branch-first default, not replacements for the whole banking system. SBI Shinsei Bank leads with English-language web banking and support, Sony Bank leads with foreign-currency deposits and travel spending, and Rakuten Bank leads with a fully online application tied to the Rakuten group ecosystem.143

Nothing in this article generalizes one bank's terms to another. Features, language coverage, fees, and transfer routing differ by bank, so every section below names the bank its claims belong to. Rakuten Bank reached 18.07 million accounts at the end of March 2026, described in its group press release as Japan's largest digital bank against named peers (as of 2026-03; confirm current figures with Rakuten Bank).5

SBI Shinsei Bank: English-first everyday banking

SBI Shinsei Bank is the pick for readers whose first requirement is doing banking in English. Its English top page advertises online services and English-speaking support for transactions anytime and anywhere.1

PowerFlex account and PowerYokin foreign-currency deposits

The PowerFlex (pawāfurekkusu, "SBI Shinsei's everyday yen account") account offers English internet banking 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, plus English support services.6 Every PowerFlex customer gets at least one free domestic online transfer per month (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with SBI Shinsei Bank).6

Partner convenience-store ATM withdrawals are free for Standard-stage customers up to 5 times per month (as of 2026-09).67 The 6th and later withdrawals cost 110 yen including tax (as of 2026-09).7 Withdrawals from Japan Post Bank ATMs, major city-bank ATMs, and the two trust-bank ATM networks cost 110 yen including tax per withdrawal (as of 2026-09).7

The foreign-currency lineup sits alongside the yen account. It includes foreign-currency savings deposits in 13 currencies, 2-week maturity deposits in US dollars, euros, Australian dollars, and New Zealand dollars, and time deposits from 1 month to 5 years in 13 currencies.8 The Step Up target-products table lists Power Yokin (pawā yokin, "a yen deposit product name") among the yen deposit products, so treat Power Yokin as a yen-side product label rather than the name of the foreign-currency lineup.7

Foreign-currency deposits are not covered by deposit insurance. Yen-denominated principal can fall on conversion because of exchange-rate moves and exchange fees, even when rates look flat.8 Interest on these deposits is subject to 20.315 percent withholding tax, split into 15.315 percent national and 5 percent local tax.8

International transfers after the GoRemit change

The GoRemit overseas remittance service was discontinued as of October 20, 2025.9 SBI Shinsei now points customers to the International Remittance Service provided by SBI Remit Co., Ltd., with separate application pages for individuals and sole proprietors versus corporate customers.9

GoRemit ended in 2025; follow the SBI Remit path instead

Old guides still name GoRemit as the in-account transfer button. Start from the current Sending Funds Overseas page so the application lands at SBI Remit Co. rather than a dead end.9

Incoming foreign-exchange remittances carry a handling fee equivalent to 2,000 yen, but Silver-stage and higher customers receive 2,000 yen cash back to their yen deposit account by the end of the following month (as of 2026-09).7

Step Up Program tiers and ATM access

The Step Up Program (suteppu appu puroguramu, "balance and usage-linked preferential tier system") sets stages of Standard, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond from balances, designated investment-product holdings, mortgage status, and transaction counts.7 Free domestic online transfers to other banks run 1 per month at Standard, 3 at Silver, 5 at Gold, and 10 each at Platinum and Diamond (as of 2026-09).7 Transfers above the free count cost 214 yen at Standard, 110 yen at Silver and Gold, and 75 yen at Platinum and Diamond, all including tax (as of 2026-09).7

New accounts sit at Platinum until the sixth month from the opening month. The seventh-month stage reflects transactions from the opening month through the fifth month.7 Customers under age 28 receive Diamond stage regardless of usage, valid until the month after their 29th birthday (as of 2026-09).7 The Step Up page states its described services are available as of September 23, 2025, and that eligibility, services, and periods may change or end without notice.7

Sony Bank: multi-currency and travel use

Sony Bank is the pick for readers who hold foreign currency or spend across borders. Its official pages describe foreign-currency deposits in 12 currencies and the Sony Bank WALLET card usable in over 200 countries and regions.42

Foreign-currency deposits (外貨預金) in 12 currencies

The 外貨預金 (gaika yokin, "foreign-currency deposit") lineup covers 12 foreign currencies across ordinary, time, and accumulation purchases with low minimums.4 Foreign-currency ordinary deposits start from 1 US dollar, time deposits from 1,000 yen or 10 US dollars, and accumulation purchases from 500 yen (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Sony Bank).4

Yen-to-US-dollar purchase exchange cost runs 4 to 15 sen depending on conditions (as of 2026-09).4 Foreign-currency remittances in and out, plus transfers between Sony Bank accounts in foreign currency, complete online. Sony Bank to Sony Bank foreign-currency transfers are free and real time.4 The foreign-currency pages carry a principal-risk warning and point readers to the important-matters notice before trading.4

Sony Bank Wallet Visa debit abroad

The Sony Bank WALLET (sonī ginkō uoretto, "Visa-debit cash card") carries yen plus 10 foreign currencies on one card: US dollars, euros, British pounds, Australian dollars, New Zealand dollars, Canadian dollars, Swiss francs, Hong Kong dollars, South African rand, and Swedish krona.10 Spending at Visa merchants in over 200 countries and regions debits the account immediately, in yen or the relevant foreign currency.10

Overseas ATM withdrawals pull local currency directly from the foreign-currency ordinary account. Where no foreign-currency balance exists, the yen account can still fund the transaction.10 A yen-assist function automatically covers shortfalls from the yen ordinary account when the foreign-currency balance is insufficient.10

Partner domestic ATMs number about 100,000. Deposits are free in principle 24 hours, and withdrawals are free up to 4 times per month combined (as of 2026-09).10 Domestic shopping cashback rises with Club S (kurabu esu, "rewards program") status from 0.5 to 2.0 percent, and status also adds one free transfer to other banks plus free after-hours partner-ATM use (as of 2026-09).10

English app and account-opening interface

Sony Bank launched an English-language smartphone app in 2020 covering yen and foreign-currency deposits, transfers, foreign-currency remittances, the WALLET card, and account administration.11 Its English top page currently presents the WALLET card, the Club S rewards program, and foreign-currency deposits in 12 major currencies as featured products.2

Treat the application form's current language coverage as unconfirmed. Secondary resident-focused sources report that Sony Bank stopped accepting account-opening applications through its English interface around mid-2025, while existing English online-banking users keep full English access. Confirm current application-language coverage on Sony Bank's official pages before applying.2

A dedicated WALLET app manages balances, push notifications on Visa-debit use, temporary card suspension, and per-use limits including online and overseas restrictions.10

Rakuten Bank: ecosystem-linked online banking

Rakuten Bank is the pick for readers already inside the Rakuten group ecosystem. Its group press release counted 18.07 million accounts at the end of March 2026, the largest digital-bank account base against named peers (as of 2026-03; confirm current figures with Rakuten Bank).5

Account opening and Money Bridge with Rakuten Securities

Rakuten Bank offers an English account-application path on PC or smartphone. Applicants prepare a 在留カード (zairyū kādo, "residence card") or special permanent resident certificate and submit identification by smartphone app or by post.3 One customer may hold only one account. Non-residents of Japan, corporate applicants, and under-18 applicants cannot use the English form, and Japanese nationals must use the Japanese form.3

Services, including customer support, are Japanese-only after the account application is registered. The bank states some services cannot be used.3 The bank app is Japanese-text only and downloadable only from Japanese app stores. Applicants who cannot use Japanese stores submit identification by post.3 English phone support exists at 0570-091-910, Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, closed on weekends, national holidays, and New Year holidays.3

Money Bridge (manē burijji, "account-linking service between Rakuten Bank and Rakuten Securities") has linked bank and securities accounts since April 2011, is free to set up, and passed 7 million accounts.5 It adds an automatic sweep between the two accounts plus a preferential ordinary-deposit rate and Rakuten Points on securities transactions through the Happy Program (happī puroguramu, "customer loyalty program").5 The preferential ordinary-deposit rate is 0.48 percent per year before tax on balances of 10 million yen or less and 0.42 percent on the portion above, applying for one month to users set up by the prior month end (as of 2026-08; confirm current figures with Rakuten Bank).5

Rakuten Card, Mobile, and Pay ecosystem

Group press material frames the bank inside the Rakuten Ecosystem of group services, including securities-linked borrowing launched in June 2025.5 Resident-focused guides describe linked use with Rakuten Card, Rakuten Pay, and Rakuten Securities, including the sweep that removes manual transfers when buying securities.12

The bundled-card application pattern after a card decline

Resident-focused publishers describe Rakuten Card as the most accessible first Japanese credit card for foreigners, with a standard card at no annual fee and a 1 percent base points rate.13 Approval is never guaranteed and depends on visa, residency length, and income.13 No primary Rakuten Bank or Rakuten Card source confirms that applying for the card together with the bank account improves approval odds. Treat the bundled application as practitioner lore worth one attempt, not a documented bank process.13

Side-by-side comparison

English coverage differs structurally, as the table below shows (figures as dated in each row; confirm current figures with each bank). SBI Shinsei offers English internet banking around the clock plus English support services, Rakuten Bank's own English page states services turn Japanese-only after registration, and Sony Bank's English app dates to 2020 with current application-interface coverage unconfirmed.6113

The decision below sketches which problem each bank fits, without ranking the banks against each other. Readers who need a different problem solved should read across rows rather than down one column.

Trade-offs of minimal physical presence

All three accounts here are applied for and operated online or by mail. An urgent transfer error goes through apps, forms, or phone lines rather than a counter visit.14103

Stopping or recalling a wire without a counter to visit

SBI Shinsei's non-Japanese-customer path is mail-only from July 2026 with in-branch opening discontinued.14 Its branches state counter services are mainly Japanese with English-speaking staff not always available, so in-person error recovery in English cannot be assumed.1 Rakuten Bank's English phone line runs weekday business hours only, so an after-hours problem waits until the next business day.3

A transfer mistake after hours waits for the next business day

With no counter to walk into, a wrong transfer cannot be stopped in person. Check the recipient details before confirming, and keep a branch-accessible backup account for urgent corrections.143

Identity verification and mail-based steps for new arrivals

SBI Shinsei directs non-Japanese applicants to an English application page completable from anywhere in Japan without a branch visit. The bank warns the process may take time and recommends early application.14 Rakuten Bank's English path requires a residence card or special permanent resident certificate, submitted by smartphone app or by post, with the cash card and setup guidebook mailed afterward.3 Sony Bank's WALLET app supports biometric login, push notifications, temporary suspension, and limits, while the account-opening identification steps themselves were not verifiable on primary English pages in this pass.10

Good to know

English coverage can differ between the app and the application form

Rakuten Bank states services turn Japanese-only after the application is registered even though the application form itself is English. A reader who completes the form alone may still need Japanese help for daily use.3 Secondary sources report Sony Bank's English application interface changed in 2025 while existing users keep English banking. Confirm current application-language coverage on Sony Bank's official pages before applying.2

Foreign-currency deposits carry exchange-rate risk, not principal protection in yen terms

SBI Shinsei warns foreign-currency deposits are not deposit-insured and yen principal can fall on conversion even without a market move once fees apply.8 Sony Bank's foreign-currency pages carry a principal-risk warning and point to the important-matters notice before trading.4

Points and preferential rates are tiered and can change

SBI Shinsei's Step Up services are stated as available as of September 23, 2025, and may change or end without notice. New accounts start at Platinum only through the sixth month.7 Rakuten Bank's Money Bridge preferential rate applies for one month to users set up by the prior month end and moves with financial conditions (as of 2026-08).5

Keep one branch-accessible account alongside an online-only account

Each bank's features, language coverage, and transfer routing differ, so a second account at a branch-accessible bank covers the error-recovery and after-hours gaps above. This is an establishment-axis caveat: the limitation comes from which bank holds the account, not from which ward the reader lives in.1143
