Sample Budget Templates by Lifestyle Tier
A Japan budget template saves a first-time resident from building a monthly plan from scattered forum posts. Each of the six worked examples below fixes a monthly total and shows where every yen goes.1
Procedures, fees, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at the Statistics Bureau of Japan and the Japan Pension Service sites.
Overview
These templates cover a frugal single in Tokyo at 170K, a standard single in Tokyo at 240K, a frugal family of four in the suburbs at 350K, a standard family of four in Tokyo at 500K, a high-tier single with international hobbies at 350K, and a high-tier family with international school at 1.2M. Each table lists rent, food, utilities, transit, phone plus internet, insurance and pension, and discretionary on one row per line item.
All yen figures are volatile planning inputs with explicit as-of dates. National context helps: one-person households spent about 163,303 per month in Q3 2025, and households of two or more spent about 314,242.2
How to use these templates
Copy the template closest to your household, then replace the rows that differ in your ward or commute. Rent bands assume the stated location for each tier, and insurance rows assume self-paid National Health Insurance plus National Pension so freelancers can copy them directly.
Reading the line items and As-of dates
Each table carries its own As of column, so every row shows its currency without repeating a confirmation clause per row. The 定期券 (teikiken, "commuter pass") row assumes cash cost before any employer reimbursement, and figures tied to a ward formula should be rechecked with your local ward office.34
Single-person total expenditure averaged 173,042 per month across 2025, which is why the two single templates sit on either side of that mean.5
Frugal single in Tokyo at 170K per month
This template fits an outer-ward 1K renter who cooks at home and keeps fixed costs low. Outer wards list 1K rents from 55,000 to 80,000, so 65,000 assumes an older building a walk from the station.136
Where the 170K goes
Figures below reflect published 2025 to 2026 bands (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the Statistics Bureau and your ward office for insurance rows).
| Item | Amount | As of | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rent (outer-ward 1K) | ¥65,000 | 2026-01136 | Older 1K, management fee extra |

| Discretionary | ¥19,000 | 2026-09 | Toiletries, clothing, limited outings |
| Total | ¥170,000 | 2026-09 | Sum of rows above |
A budget SIM from a carrier such as Rakuten Mobile keeps the phone row near 2,000 to 3,000, which protects the 170K total without changing housing or food.3
Standard single in Tokyo at 240K per month
This template fits a mid-city 1K renter who mixes home cooking with regular eating out. Mid-city 1K rents list 90,000 to 120,000, so 95,000 assumes Nakano or Suginami rather than Shibuya or Minato.36

Frugal family of four in the suburbs at 350K per month
This template fits a suburban 2LDK family using public schools and home-centered cooking. Suburban 2LDK rents list 110,000 to 160,000, so 110,000 assumes Saitama, Chiba, or western Tokyo rather than inside the 23 wards.3

| Total | ¥350,000 | 2026-09 | Sum of rows above |
The 国民健康保険 (kokumin kenkō hoken, "National Health Insurance") row grows with each enrollee because the system has no dependent concept; each family member adds a per-capita levy.4 The 国民年金 (kokumin nenkin, "National Pension") row is simpler at 17,920 per adult per month from April 2026.9
Standard family of four in Tokyo at 500K per month
This template fits a 23-wards 2LDK or 3LDK family using public schools with regular outings. Central 2LDK rents list 180,000 to 260,000, so 180,000 anchors the low end of that band.3
Where the 500K goes

| Discretionary | ¥60,000 | 2026-09 | Extracurriculars, outings, clothing |
| Total | ¥500,000 | 2026-09 | Sum of rows above |
High-tier single with international hobbies at 350K per month
This template fits a central 1LDK single who skis, dives, plays music, or travels domestically most months. Central 1K rents run 120,000 to 160,000, so 150,000 assumes a central 1LDK rather than a studio.1
Where the 350K goes
Figures below reflect published 2025 to 2026 bands (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the Statistics Bureau for utility rows).
| Item | Amount | As of | Notes |

| Total | ¥350,000 | 2026-09 | Sum of rows above |
Hobby spend is the swing row here. One month of ski weekends or a dive trip can absorb the full 50,000, while a quiet month leaves room for savings.
High-tier family with international school at 1.2M per month
This template fits a central 3LDK family with one child in international elementary school. Tuition of 2.0M to 2.8M per year amortizes to about 250,000 per month for a 3.0M school year, before first-year admission and facility levies.1112 Aggregators list central 3-bed rents from about 327,682 to 390,300, so the 280,000 row below assumes outside the premium core or an older lease.72
Where the 1.2M goes
Figures below reflect published 2025 to 2026 bands (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the school for tuition rows and with your ward office for insurance rows).
| Item | Amount | As of | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|

| Insurance and pension | ¥116,000 | 2026-064 | High income-based NHI under the 1.09M cap plus two pensions |
| International school (amortized) | ¥250,000 | 2026-011112 | 3.0M per year for one child, tuition only |
| Discretionary | ¥340,000 | 2026-09 | Travel fund, lessons, help, savings buffer |
| Total | ¥1,200,000 | 2026-09 | Sum of rows above |
The NHI row here is capped: the FY Reiwa 7 levy limit is 1,090,000 per year across the medical, support, and care portions.4 Two National Pension premiums sit on top of that cap at 17,920 per adult per month.9
Good to know
Residence tax bills arrive in year two, not year one
Residence tax for an income year is billed starting the following June, so a new arrival pays little or nothing in year one and meets the first full bill in year two (as of 2025-12).6 Guides describe holding back about 15,000 to 20,000 per month through year one as a reserve, and the same pattern can repeat into year three after a full earning year.6
National Health Insurance is cheapest in year one
Premiums combine a prior-year income levy with a flat per-person amount, so the first year prices near the minimum of about 2,000 to 5,000 per month before jumping with reported income (as of 2026-06).410 Low-income households can access statutory reductions, and the annual household cap is 1,090,000 (as of 2026-06).4
Winter utilities can add 5K to monthly spend
Japanese apartments insulate poorly, so heating demand lifts winter bills by about 5,000 above spring and autumn baselines (as of 2025-12).6 Electricity unit math scales with use plus the national renewable surcharge of 3.98 per kWh applied from May 2025 meter reads (as of 2025-11).8
Commuter passes are often employer-paid
Most employers reimburse the fixed home-to-office route in full, which can reduce one adult's cash transit row to near zero. Confirm reimbursement coverage before locking the transit budget, since irregular trips and family travel still come from the household.
International-school totals exclude first-year admission fees
Published tuition of 2.0M to 3.5M per year understates year one, when admission, facility, and capital levies push all-in costs to 3.5M to 5.5M (as of 2026-05).1113 Expect 4 to 7 percent annual uplifts on top (as of 2026-05).13
