This guide covers domestic residential moves within Japan for tenants who already have a move date in mind. It explains the two mover models, how seasonal pricing works, how quotes work, what service tiers cover, and when shipping boxes alone makes sense.
Pricing and availability work the same way nationwide. Only the yen figure and the branch schedule vary by route and date, so the seasonal and quoting logic here applies whether the move stays inside one city or crosses prefectures.
The Mover Landscape in Japan
Japan's movers divide into formal full-service companies with crews and truck fleets, and the Akabou light-truck cooperative network built around small volumes. Both are legitimate licensed options. They simply suit different move sizes.

Formal full-service movers
Sakai Moving Service describes a standard flow of quotation inquiry, pre-move survey by visit or video, written quotation, packing support, moving-day transport, and completion confirmation, with quotations free of charge.1 The company recommends arranging the survey one to one and a half months before the move, and asks for at least the destination city name plus item volume at inquiry.1
Sakai sends cardboard boxes matched to the agreed move volume, free according to goods volume.1 Optional services include appliance disposal, air-conditioner and washing-machine dismantling and installation, packing services, house cleaning, and piano transport.1
Art Moving Company structures its Omakase Pack in three courses, Basic, Half, and Full, alongside limited packs such as student, ladies, and senior plans.2 Estimates open from about three months before the move, and the company recommends requesting one from one to two months ahead down to about two weeks ahead.2 Small low-volume single moves can be estimated by phone or mail.2
Nippon Express runs single-person plans, including a small-load long-distance pack and a short-distance same-day pack, plus family plans in self, half, and full variants.3 Every plan carries moving-cargo transport insurance, and optional add-ons are available across plans.3 Family plans cover all Japan except some remote islands with no volume cap, crews of two or more, and free boxes by volume, while single packs cap volume at about one person with narrower service areas on some packs (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Nippon Express).3
The Akabou light-truck model
Akabou is a national cooperative federation of independent light-cargo operators, and its moving service is a chartered run with no transshipment between vehicles from origin to destination.5 The Single Pack product targets single-person and student moves sized to one light truck, carrying only the customer's goods straight through.5
The official guide also describes family moves handled with multiple trucks, plus short-distance or narrow-street moves where large trucks cannot operate.5 Per-vehicle fares are published by regional cooperative on prefecture fare pages, so there is no single national Akabou tariff to quote.5
In practice, tenant guides describe the Akabou run as one driver with one small truck where the customer helps load and unload, a workable tradeoff for a studio or one-bedroom short move.6 Heavier pieces such as a small fridge or couch mean lending a hand with lifting.6 One dated practitioner band put a small Tokyo Akabou run at about JPY 9,000 to 12,000 (as of 2018-09-12).6 Treat that figure as an illustration of the model's price position, not a current tariff, and confirm the live fare with the departure prefecture's Akabou page.
Off-Season vs Peak-Season Pricing

The March-end to April rush
MLIT states that moving requests concentrate every year from March to April, and asks users to shift dates where possible, citing reports of lower fees and easier booking off the last March weekend.8 The concentration follows Japan's April-start fiscal, corporate-transfer, and school calendars landing on the same weeks.

Off-season windows and weekday effects

A weekday move generally costs less than a weekend one, though the saving is smaller than the seasonal swing.47 Mid-month weekday afternoons off-peak form the cheapest combination, while month-end, start-of-month, and fixed morning slots each add a premium.49 Accepting a flexible no-time-specified slot trims a small further amount, described as roughly JPY 2,000 to 5,000 off the fixed-slot price (as of 2026-08-06).7
Quote Shopping Is the Norm
There is no published fixed rate in this industry. The mover surveys the load and issues an itemized written quote, and comparing three or more such quotes on identical conditions is the expected tenant behavior.47

How a pre-move survey and written quote work

Comparing like for like and negotiating
Comparison works only on identical conditions: same volume, same distance, same date and time flexibility, and the same add-on lines.7 Aggregator sites such as Hikkoshi Samurai and SUUMO Hikkoshi request multi-company quotes at once, but submissions typically trigger follow-up phone calls, so requesting three companies directly avoids the call burst.47
Mentioning a competing quote and asking politely for a reduction is widely practiced and not considered rude.47 The commonly cited phrase is "Mo sukoshi yasuku narimasen ka" (Could you make it a bit cheaper).7 Reported reductions run roughly JPY 3,000 to 10,000 on comparable quotes (as of 2026-08-06).7 Treat that band as anecdotal leverage, not a guaranteed discount.
Service Tiers: What Each Level Covers
Formal movers sell the same job in layers. The base is transport with furniture handling, and each higher tier moves more of the packing work onto the crew. Optional add-ons sit outside all three tiers.
Basic: move only
The basic tier, Art's Basic Course and Nippon Express's Self Plan, covers large-furniture packing, carry-out, transport, carry-in, and setting, while the tenant handles box packing and unpacking.23 Book this tier only with every box finished before crew arrival, since tenant-side delays cascade into the crew's schedule.7
Standard: move plus reassembly
The standard tier adds mover-side work around the same transport core. Art's Half Course adds mover packing to the basic core, while Nippon Express's Half Plan keeps the unpacking at the tenant's own pace.23 Furniture disassembly and reassembly plus wall and floor protection sit in this standard core.27
Premium: pack, move, unpack, install
The premium tier, Art's Full Course and Nippon Express's Full Plan, adds both packing and unpacking to the basic core for tenants who want everything handled.23 Appliance installation such as washing-machine and air-conditioner removal and reinstallation, unwanted-item disposal, house cleaning, piano transport, and temporary storage remain optional add-ons, adding roughly JPY 10,000 to 50,000 or more depending on scope (as of 2026-08-06; confirm current figures with the quoting mover).7
The Boxes-Only Option for Small Moves
A full mover is not mandatory for a small move. Parcel carriers and single-person container packs cover box-only volumes at lower cost, provided no large furniture travels along.
When boxes-only fits
Parcel carriers ship box by box at roughly JPY 1,500 to 2,500 per box, workable up to about ten boxes with no furniture (as of 2026-08-31; confirm current figures with the parcel carrier).4 Yamato's TA-Q-BIN network, the 宅急便 (takkyubin), "door-to-door parcel delivery", runs next-day or two-day delivery to most of the country on size-banded rates with cashless and agency discounts.10 Sagawa and Japan Post run equivalent parcel products.10
Yamato Home Convenience offers a single-person moving product built around a dedicated special box matched to goods volume, suited to customers with few or small household goods.11 The formal-mover analogue is the 単身パック (tanshin pakku), "fixed-price single-person container pack": belongings share a truck in a fixed-size container at roughly JPY 25,000 to 50,000 off-peak, with delivery on a date range rather than a chosen hour (as of 2026-08-31).43
Washing machines usually decide the question. Disconnecting, transporting, and reinstalling one without help is awkward, and a leak in a Japanese apartment becomes an expensive liability claim, so a mover beats boxes-only once a washing machine travels.4 A self-drive rental van at roughly JPY 8,000 to 15,000 per day is the cheapest path for license holders with help (as of 2026-08-31).4

Book peak-season dates two to four months ahead
For late-March to early-April moves, request quotes in January and book one to two months ahead for single moves or two to four months ahead for family moves.7 Some large firms take peak bookings three to six months out.7 Outside peak season, two to three weeks of notice is usually enough, which is part of why off-season moves feel far less stressful to schedule.7
Weekend and month-end slots cost more even off-peak
Weekend, month-end, start-of-month, and fixed-morning slots each add a premium over a mid-month weekday flexible slot.49 The フリー便 (furii bin), "free-date discounted slot", trades a mover-chosen time window for a lower figure.9 Where the date can flex, a Tuesday in the second week of the month beats the last Saturday of March by a wide margin.
Self-packing saves money but shifts damage responsibility
Opting out of packing and unpacking is the single easiest cost cut, and most firms still supply free boxes even on self-pack plans.7 The tradeoff is schedule risk rather than just effort. Boxes must be finished before the crew arrives, because an unfinished pack delays the truck for every job behind it that day.7
Confirm appliance installation and box collection in the quote
Air-conditioner and washing-machine installation, unwanted-item disposal, and piano handling are add-ons rather than core inclusions, so each line needs to appear in the written quote before booking.137 Empty-box collection also needs one explicit line. Most firms collect used materials afterward, but Art's FAQ prices box collection as a paid service, so confirm who collects and whether a fee applies before assuming pickup is free.27
