Overview
Most people in Japan can get glasses entirely through the メガネ屋 (megane-ya, "optical shop"), without an ophthalmologist's prescription.1 You walk in, take the store's vision measurement, choose frames, and have lenses fitted on site.53
This guide covers all residents needing vision correction. Buying glasses is an ordinary retail purchase, and chains list no required documents.6 National chains offer in-store measurement at their stores across Japan.37
The optical-shop default
Refraction-only fittings live at the optical shop, while the 眼科 (ganka, "ophthalmology clinic") handles eye health.82
You return to an ophthalmologist for specific eye-health concerns or a contact-lens first prescription, not for routine glasses.89 This article stays on the glasses path and describes access, not treatment.

The in-store visit step by step
The visit follows one short flow from entry to pickup, as the diagram shows.53
Walk-in is the norm, and some chains also take same-day reservations through their store pages.3 OWNDAYS links its store measurement devices to a Tokyo control center over a dedicated line, so measurement continues even without an on-site specialist.3
Chains quote a fastest handover of 20 to 30 minutes when lenses are in stock (as of 2026-09-25; confirm current patterns with the shop).3144 Zoff's own guide, dated 2019, describes a whole visit including measurement as about an hour.6
What to bring and what to expect at reception
No prescription or residency paperwork is needed for a refraction-only fitting.16 Bring your current glasses if you own a pair, plus a payment method.6 Zoff still recommends an ophthalmologist's prescription for first-time wearers, children of junior-high age and under, and people whose astigmatism or presbyopia is progressing.1
Reception confirms what you need: new glasses, a prescription update, or a lens exchange. Staff then guide you to the measurement corner before frame selection.3
Zoff asks customers to bring any glasses they currently wear as a reference for the new pair.6
Costs and insurance
Public health insurance does not cover glasses for ordinary vision correction, so every pair below is full self-pay at retail prices.15 The exception is treatment glasses for children under 9 with amblyopia, strabismus, or refractive correction after congenital-cataract surgery, reimbursed as 療養費 (ryōyōhi, "reimbursement of medical costs paid up front").1516

When to see an ophthalmologist instead
Eye-health concerns belong at an ophthalmology clinic with a licensed physician, not at the optical-shop counter.8 Pain, redness, sudden vision loss, eye fatigue that rest does not relieve, an eye injury, or chemicals in the eye all point to 眼科 (ganka) rather than a refraction corner.82021
A contact-lens first prescription also runs through the ophthalmologist path.9 That process, including fitting and follow-up, sits outside this glasses-only guide.9

Strong prescriptions and same-day limits

Ask about timing before paying when your prescription is strong or your lens choice is unusual. A one-day delay beats a second trip across town.3
Lens options priced into the frame
Standard thin lenses come bundled in the frame price at value chains, while extras add fixed amounts.312 Color lenses add around 4,000 JPY and light-adjusting lenses add from 6,000 JPY at OWNDAYS (as of 2026-09-25).12
Decide on options before processing starts. Each add-on changes the final bill but not the insurance picture, since glasses for ordinary vision correction stay self-pay either way.1512
Contact lenses are a separate path
A glasses fitting does not substitute for a contact-lens first prescription at an ophthalmologist; JINS, for example, does not measure for contact lenses in store.92 Contact lenses follow their own clinical path: a check of the cornea's curve, lens selection by the ophthalmologist, and regular follow-up visits.9
Start that path at an eye clinic when you want contacts for the first time. Return to the optical shop for glasses whenever refraction alone is the goal.91
