Vocational High Schools: Commerce, Industry, Agriculture, Nursing

Vocational high schools run three-year programs with a practical-skills focus. The classic departments are 商業高校 (shōgyō kōkō, "commercial high school"), 工業高校 (kōgyō kōkō, "industrial or technical high school"), 農業高校 (nōgyō kōkō, "agricultural high school"), and nursing courses (看護科, kangoka).1 Students graduate with occupational skills, workplace practice, and qualifications that employers recognize at hiring time.

Course availability varies by prefecture and school: not every prefecture offers every field, and nursing courses in particular concentrate in designated schools. The curriculum blends general subjects with stepwise specialized engineering education, emphasizing experiments, practical training, and hands-on skills on top of theory.3 By graduation, students hold knowledge and skills at or above university level in their fields, which explains the system's strong reputation with industrial employers.2

Admission after middle school

Entry requires junior-high graduation and passes through entrance examinations held by each college.23 Students enter at around age 15, effectively replacing high school with the first three kosen years plus two years of associate-level technical education. After graduation: work, advanced course, or university transfer

Graduates earn the title of associate (准学士, jun-gakushi) and face three well-trodden exits. Many enter engineering employment directly, where kosen graduates are strongly recruited. Others continue into the college's two-year advanced course (専攻科, senkōka), after which examinations and report work can yield a bachelor's degree through the national degree-awarding institution.3

Families sometimes confuse them with vocational high schools because both carry the vocational label; the structural difference is timing, with senshu-gakko requiring high-school-age completion first.

The boundary matters here for one reason: a student who wants hands-on training has two doors at age 15 (vocational high school, kosen) and a third door at age 18 (senshu-gakko), and choosing the age-15 door never locks the age-18 one.

Vocational tracks and kosen are open to resident foreign students, and the kosen system in particular is competitive while producing strongly employed engineering graduates.25 For hands-on learners with solid mathematics and science, kosen can outperform an academic track that ends in an unmotivated university placement.

Kosen instruction is in Japanese

All kosen classes are given in Japanese.6 That single fact filters applicants more than any exam syllabus: a student who can converse socially but cannot follow technical lectures will struggle from the first term. Build academic Japanese, especially mathematics and science vocabulary, before entry rather than after.

Vocational choice narrows some university paths

General-university admission from vocational high school tracks is possible but less direct than from academic tracks.1 Students should confirm the admission requirements of any target university early, since required subjects may not be covered in depth by a vocational curriculum.
