Kenkyusei: The Research-Student Bridge in Japan

Kenkyusei Japan status lets a prospective graduate student research under a professor before entering a formal degree. The six-month supervised term builds the relationship and the research base that the degree entrance examination later tests.

Overview

The 研究生 (kenkyusei, "non-degree research student") is a supervised, non-degree status for academic research under a specific professor. Prospective master's and doctoral students commonly use a six-month or one-year term as the on-ramp to the formal degree at the same institution.12

No degree or qualification is conferred on completion. The formal degree entrance examination remains mandatory after the kenkyusei term, and the supervised period often weights preparation without replacing the exam. Applicants weighing a taught route instead can compare the language-school on-ramp in Language-School Bridges to University and Senmon-Gakkō.2

Status: non-degree supervision

Kenkyusei research runs on a defined subject under a 指導教員 (shido kyoin, "supervising professor"). Admission presumes supervisor acceptance first, then administrative screening by the graduate school. Cold applications without a willing supervisor rarely advance.1

International applicants also clear security export-control screening before and after enrollment under university regulations tied to foreign-exchange law. Certain research themes can face enrollment or activity restrictions after review. Applicants in sensitive technical fields should expect the extra step.1

Terms and the path into a degree

Terms commonly run six months and renew by application. At the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, Student-visa kenkyusei time caps around two years including prior kenkyusei periods at other universities, absent special circumstances (as of 2026-09). That cap is a school-specific rule cited as an example, not a national limit.1

The degree path runs through the standard entrance examination after or during the kenkyusei term. Supervision builds the proposal, methods, and academic Japanese or English record that the exam and interview assess. Applicants building Japanese alongside research can use Evaluating Japanese Language Schools for the preparatory-school market. Treat the term as funded preparation with structure, not as provisional admission.2

The diagram shows the bridge shape: supervision first, examination second, degree third. Extension loops inside the supervised phase without skipping the exam.

Tuition and fees

National-university examples set the band clearly. The University of Tokyo charges an 84,600 yen admission fee plus 173,400 yen tuition per six months for kenkyusei (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the graduate school). That converts to roughly 28,900 yen per month before screening and admission fees.12

The table reflects Todai and THERS-region national examples (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the target school). Private universities set their own tables and vary widely, so the national band does not transfer (limitation noted; school pages govern).3

No admission-fee or tuition waivers apply to kenkyusei at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science under current terms (as of 2026-09). Commuter passes and student discounts are also generally unavailable to kenkyusei, which raises the effective monthly cost above the tuition line alone. City budgets around the fee are easier to set with Realistic Cost of Living: Single Resident, Three City Tiers.2

Visa and enrollment mechanics

Kenkyusei hold Student residence status. The Certificate of Eligibility flow illustrated in the Student Visa Process Through a Language School shows the mechanics even though kenkyusei file through their graduate school. Admitted applicants pay entrance and tuition fees by the school deadline, then complete immigration procedures with university-issued documents. Schools expect applicants to handle passport, visa, and travel steps themselves rather than through an agent.1

Part-time work during the term follows the same permission system as other Student statuses, covered in Working While on a Student Visa. Payment deadlines cluster just before term start. The October-enrollment Todai example sets combined payment in early September, a pattern other schools mirror with their own dates. Missing the payment window voids the admission regardless of visa progress.1

Confirm who issues the Certificate of Eligibility paperwork

Most graduate schools support the Certificate of Eligibility documents while the applicant files the visa at the home-country mission. Confirm the division of labor in the guideline PDF, since it varies by school.

Finding a supervisor

Supervisor contact precedes paperwork in practice. A concise proposal with theme, methods, timeline, and fit to the laboratory's published work outperforms a generic request. Reading two or three recent laboratory publications before writing is the minimum credible preparation.1

Fit outweighs prestige at this stage. A responsive supervisor in the exact subfield produces stronger examination outcomes than a famous laboratory with no meeting time. Ask about supervision frequency and language before accepting any informal offer. Graduates who stay for employment after the degree typically switch to a work status such as the Engineer/Humanities/International Services Visa.

Good to know

Kenkyusei time does not convert automatically into a degree

The status confers no qualification and no guaranteed seat. Degree entry still runs through the entrance examination with its own subjects, dates, and quotas.2

Supervisor fit matters more than laboratory prestige

Daily guidance quality and theme alignment determine what the term produces. A mismatched placement costs six months and weakens the later degree application.

Discounts and waivers rarely apply to kenkyusei

Tuition waivers, commuter discounts, and student-price schemes commonly exclude non-degree research students. Budget the full sticker rates plus transport at market fares.2
