Secondhand Buying and Selling in Japan: Mercari, Jimoty, and Recycle Shops

Secondhand buying and selling in Japan runs through three main channels: Mercari for items you can ship, Jimoty for bulky items collected locally, and recycle shops for fast cash or a whole-apartment clearance.123 Whether you are furnishing a first apartment on a budget or clearing out before a move or departure, selling or giving items away often costs less than paying your city to collect them as oversized trash.456

Confirm current details with official sources

Procedures, fees, and requirements can change. Confirm current details at the Mercari Help Center (help.jp.mercari.com) and at each platform's or city's own pages. This article is general information, not tax or legal advice; for your specific case, consult a licensed zeirishi (tax accountant) about repeated or high-value sales, or a gyōseishoshi (administrative scrivener) or your prefectural police's public safety commission if you plan to buy and resell goods as a business.

Overview

Japan's secondhand market splits by how an item changes hands. Mercari is a shipping marketplace: the buyer pays in the app, the seller sends the parcel, and neither needs to know the other's name or address.78 Jimoty is a local classifieds board where the buyer or taker comes to collect, often for free.2

A リサイクルショップ (risaikuru shoppu, "recycle shop") buys items over the counter, by mail, or by visiting your home.3910 Some pay cash on the spot and will collect large items from your home, which matters in the last weeks before a move.39

Which channel fits which item

The right channel depends on the item's size, its value, and how much time you have. The table below compares the four channels covered here; fees are as of 2026-10-10 (confirm current figures with each platform's help pages).

The mechanics suggest a simple split. Items that fit a parcel and are worth more than the shipping suit Mercari; items too large to ship suit Jimoty's buyer-collects model; a recycle shop can clear whatever is left in one visit.

What this article covers and what lives elsewhere

This article covers how to buy and how to sell on each channel, plus the offloading and departure angle: disposal costs, ID rules, payouts, and tax. Price benchmarks for used furniture and appliances, and new-furniture options, are covered in Furnishing on a Budget: Where Used Furniture Lives.

Mercari

Mercari (メルカリ, Merukari) is a flea-market app run by Mercari, Inc. The rules below come directly from its help center.201

Account setup and phone verification

Mercari asks you to prepare a mobile number that can receive an SMS or a call.12 Fixed-line numbers, numbers starting with 050, and 通信専用 (tsūshin sen'yō, "data-only") numbers cannot be used for phone verification (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current rules with the Mercari Help Center).12

電話番号認証 (denwa bangō ninshō, "phone-number verification") is not strictly required to open an account. Without it, though, you cannot list items, use Merpay (Mercari's payment service), join campaigns, or buy from Mercari Shops (as of 2026-10-10).12 Mercari also lists situations that can trigger an SMS code, including new registration, re-login, some payment settings, and the first purchase after logging in on a new device or browser (as of 2026-10-10).21

Mercari's help pages do not say whether a non-Japanese mobile number is accepted.1221 If you do not yet have a Japanese mobile number, plan to get one before relying on Mercari. Registration and the app itself are free (as of 2026-10-10).1

Buying on Mercari

Paying by credit card, Merpay balance, Apple Pay, FamilyMart's FamiPay, or Merpay credit costs nothing extra. Konbini payment, ATM payment, and carrier billing carry a fee that rises with the amount, under a schedule Mercari revised on 2023-05-23 (current as of 2026-10-10).1

Payment amount (konbini, ATM, or carrier billing)FeeAs of
Up to ¥5,000¥1002026-10-101

¥30,001–¥40,000¥7002026-10-101
¥40,001 and above¥8802026-10-101

Mercari's Japanese fee page lists no separate buyer service or "protection" fee beyond these payment-method fees (as of 2026-10-10).1

How a purchase completes

Your money does not go straight to the seller. It is released only after you confirm the item arrived, which is what protects you if something goes wrong.8 The flow runs as follows.8

With らくらくメルカリ便 (Rakuraku Merukari-bin, "Mercari shipping via Yamato") or ゆうゆうメルカリ便 (Yūyū Merukari-bin, "Mercari shipping via Japan Post"), neither party sees the other's name or address. Mercari calls this 匿名配送 (tokumei haisō, "anonymous delivery").711 Transaction messages close once more than 2 weeks have passed since the last message after completion (as of 2026-10-10), so keep anything you need.8

If an item arrives damaged or not as described

Do not give the 受取評価 (uketori hyōka, "receipt rating"). Message the seller in the transaction thread about the item's condition and try to agree a fix, such as a partial refund.22

If you cannot resolve it, contact the Mercari office within 14 days of the item arriving (as of 2026-10-10).22 For メルカリ便 shipments, Mercari may ask for photos, for the item to be sent to a recovery center, and for identity verification.22

Identity verification (本人確認) with a residence card

本人確認 (honnin kakunin, "identity verification") is optional for buying, but it changes how your sales proceeds behave and is required for some Merpay functions.2013 Foreign nationals complete it only in the smartphone app, through the アプリでかんたん本人確認 (apuri de kantan honnin kakunin, "in-app quick verification") method (as of 2026-10-10).20

Accepted documents and the process

Foreign nationals can verify only with a residence card or a special permanent resident certificate. The My Number card reading method is not available to foreign nationals (as of 2026-10-10).20

You photograph the front, back, and thickness of the card, take a photo of your face as instructed on screen, and select the nationality shown on the card.20 Completing verification enrolls you in Merpay's fund-transfer service, so you can spend your sales proceeds directly on purchases.20

New-format cards (the 特定在留カード and the 第二世代在留カード) issued from 2026-06-14 can be used (as of 2026-10-10).23

Restrictions by status of residence (Merpay only)

Applies to: Student (留学) and Dependent (家族滞在) status holders, and anyone who entered Japan less than 6 months ago.

For these users, Mercari says some Merpay services may be restricted (as of 2026-10-10); its page does not list which ones.20 The restriction is stated for Merpay services, not for listing or selling on Mercari.20

Student and Dependent holders who verify with a new-format card must also submit extra documents proving at least 6 months' residence (as of 2026-10-10), because the new cards no longer print the permission type and date on the front.23 Mercari tells affected users which documents to send by in-app message; the help page does not list them.23

When your residence card expires

As your card nears or passes its expiry date, Mercari asks you to submit it again. The card you submit must have 60 or more days of validity left (as of 2026-10-10); cards with less time left, cards still in renewal processing, and expired cards are not accepted.24

Until you re-verify, some Mercari functions and all Merpay functions, including Merpay's send-and-receive transfers, become unavailable.24 Re-verification takes from several hours to about 5 days (as of 2026-10-10).24

Renew your card before resubmitting it to Mercari

A card that is still in renewal processing cannot be submitted, so the earliest you can re-verify is when the new card is in your hand.24 Build that gap into any plan to sell heavily around a renewal.

Listing, pricing, and buyer etiquette

Mercari's seller guidelines ask for photos of the actual item from several angles, close-ups of any damage, and a description with specific defects, measurements, and materials.25 A line such as "画面に小さな傷が2箇所あります" ("two small scratches on the screen") is the expected level of detail.25

Every listing carries one of six 商品の状態 (shōhin no jōtai, "item condition") grades, defined by Mercari as follows (as of 2026-10-10).25

GradeMeaning
新品、未使用Bought new, never used
未使用に近いUsed a few times, little sign of use
目立った傷や汚れなしMinor wear or marks, not noticeable
やや傷や汚れありNoticeable scratches or marks
傷や汚れありScratches or marks most people would see
全体的に状態が悪いScratches, marks, or damage throughout

Price negotiation

値下げ交渉 (nesage kōshō, "price negotiation") usually happens in the comments, and Mercari also has a formal 値下げ依頼 (nesage irai, "price-reduction request"). If the seller accepts a request, the buyer can buy at that price, but must do so within 24 hours (as of 2026-10-10), and other buyers can still purchase in the meantime.26

The request feature does not work on items priced ¥300 or less, Mercari Shops items, sold items, or auction-format listings (as of 2026-10-10).26

Messaging norms

Mercari's etiquette page says greetings are not mandatory but help trades go smoothly. Buyers should not dictate a price ("○○円で買います", "I'll buy it for ○○ yen") or demand large reductions.27

Comments and rating comments are visible to every user, so your rating history follows you.27

Anonymous shipping from a konbini

Mercari offers two anonymous shipping services with flat nationwide rates: らくらくメルカリ便, run with Yamato Transport, and ゆうゆうメルカリ便, run with Japan Post.71128

The seller chooses who pays at the time of listing: 送料込み (sōryō komi, "shipping included", paid by the seller) or 着払い (chakubarai, "cash on delivery", the buyer pays the carrier).29 An item listed with shipping included cannot later be sent cash-on-delivery.29

Where to drop off

Each konbini chain handles only one of the two services, so pick your shipping method with your nearest store in mind.30 The drop-off options branch as follows.112830

集荷 (shūka, "home pickup") for らくらくメルカリ便 costs ¥100 per transaction (as of 2026-10-10).28 Parcels over 160 cm go only from a Yamato office or by pickup, and ゆうパック (Yū-Pakku, "Japan Post parcel") sizes 120 and above go only from a post office (as of 2026-10-10).3132

Fees and getting paid

Mercari takes its 10% 販売手数料 (hanbai tesūryō, "seller fee") from the sale price when a transaction completes (as of 2026-10-10).1 Your share then sits in the app as 売上金 (uriagekin, "sales proceeds") until you withdraw it or spend it.13

A 振込申請 (furikomi shinsei, "withdrawal request") cannot be made when your balance is at or below the ¥200 fee (as of 2026-10-10).39 The fee is waived if you use メルカリバンク (Merukari Banku, "Mercari Bank", a linked Minna Bank account) or are borrowing under メルペイスマートマネー (Merupei Sumāto Manē, "Merpay Smart Money", Merpay's loan service).39

The 180-day proceeds deadline

Unverified sales proceeds carry a 180-day withdrawal deadline (as of 2026-10-10).13 Once you complete in-app identity verification, they show as a 残高 (zandaka, "balance") with no deadline, and you can spend them through Merpay instead of withdrawing.2013

Unverified sales proceeds can lapse entirely

If unverified proceeds go unused past the deadline, Mercari tries an automatic transfer to your registered bank account up to twice, charging ¥200 each time (as of 2026-10-10).13 With no registered account, or proceeds of ¥200 or less, the money 失効 (shikkō, "lapses") and cannot be used.13

Withdrawals go only to an account in your own name. Japan Post Bank savings (貯蓄) accounts, virtual accounts, and accounts whose holder name is in alphabetic characters cannot receive them (as of 2026-10-10).39

Jimoty

Jimoty (ジモティー, Jimotī) describes itself as a local community bulletin board (地元の掲示板) where people sell items and also give them away.2 Registration and fees are free, with optional paid features to boost a listing's visibility (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current terms with Jimoty's help pages).2

How Jimoty works: local classifieds, not shipping

A seller posts an item and waits for inquiries. A buyer presses the contact button and fills in a form, and the two then arrange handover and payment in chat or through a Jimoty-provided relay email address.2

Listings marked あげます・譲ります (agemasu / yuzurimasu, "giving away / handing on") are free or near-free transfers, which makes Jimoty a natural route for furniture you would otherwise pay to dispose of.2

Payment

The standard deal is cash on the spot: meet locally, hand over the item, take payment.40 To prevent fraud, Jimoty prohibits bank transfers and any outside payment method (as of 2026-10-10).40

Sellers can also enable オンライン決済 (onrain kessai, "online payment"), in which Jimoty holds the money until the buyer rates the transaction.40 Accepted methods are VISA or Mastercard credit cards, d払い (d-barai, a smartphone payment service), konbini payment at Lawson, FamilyMart, Ministop, or Seicomart, bank ATM payment for items of ¥5,000 and above, and Paidy deferred payment (as of 2026-10-10).40

The fees in this table apply only when online payment is used; a cash handover costs nothing (as of 2026-10-10).4

Registration and verification

Jimoty offers several verification types, each shown as a badge on posts and user pages.15

VerificationWhat it unlocks
電話番号(SMS)認証 (phone/SMS)Posting in some categories and sending inquiries15
身分証認証 (mibunshō ninshō, ID document)Posting in all categories15
法人書類認証, 古物商許可証認証, 宅建業免許番号認証Business verifications (corporate documents, secondhand-dealer licence, real-estate licence)15

Some categories require ID or corporate verification, and Jimoty may ask for extra ID verification when you reply about high-value items (as of 2026-10-10).1541 Jimoty's pages do not say whether a non-Japanese mobile number works for SMS verification.

Jimoty publishes its accepted documents for ID verification as one valid, publicly issued document: a driver's license, a passport, a pension book or certificate (年金手帳/年金証書), or a residence record (住民票) issued within 3 months (as of 2026-10-10).42 Since 2026-02-26 it also accepts My Number card verification through the Digital Agency's マイナアプリ (Myna App).42 The published list does not name the residence card; confirm with Jimoty's support before relying on it.

Checks take 30 minutes on average and up to 1 business day (as of 2026-10-10).42

Pickup etiquette and no-shows

Cancelling an agreed handover without notice, known as ドタキャン (dotakyan, "last-minute no-show"), is prohibited on Jimoty. After support confirms what happened, Jimoty may warn or suspend the account, and you can report a no-show from the message screen.43

To prevent no-shows, Jimoty suggests scheduling the handover soon after agreeing, sending a confirmation message at least 1 hour beforehand, and agreeing in advance what happens if there is no reply.43 Its example: cancel if there is no answer 30 minutes after the confirmation message.43

For the handover itself, Jimoty advises:4445

  • Avoid 密室 (misshitsu, "closed-room") transactions and meet where people are around; small items can change hands at a nearby station or shopping street.
  • For furniture or appliances that must come out of your home, have family or a friend present, and place the item outside the entrance beforehand so the other person does not need to come in.
  • Share a description of your clothing or the vehicle's license plate in advance.
  • Check the item on the spot, including that electronics power on, and confirm the payment amount.

Municipal reuse partnerships

Some cities formally partner with Jimoty as a disposal alternative. These are local arrangements, not a national program, so check whether your own city has one.4647

Sakai City (Osaka Prefecture) signed an agreement with Jimoty on 2022-06-28, and its page also links to a separate city-run reuse program for bulky waste.46 Hamamatsu City (Shizuoka Prefecture) has a cooperation agreement with Jimoty and directs residents to it to find local takers for unwanted items (as of its 2026-02-24 page update).47

Recycle shops and buyback chains

Recycle shops are the fastest exit. The chains below pay on the spot or soon after, and some will collect furniture and appliances from your home in one visit.3948

In-store and home-pickup buyback

There are three ways to sell to a chain: 店頭買取 (tentō kaitori, "in-store buyback"), 出張買取 (shutchō kaitori, "home-pickup buyback"), and 宅配買取 (takuhai kaitori, "mail-in buyback").3910 Item-age limits and minimums are each chain's commercial policy, not law, and 2nd Street notes that eligibility can differ at some stores.49

The policies below are as of 2026-10-10 (confirm current terms on each chain's own pages).

ChainPolicyAs of

When booking a 2nd Street home pickup, tell the store if your move date is fixed.3 Treasure Factory also offers a combined buyback and moving service, トレファク引越 (Torefaku Hikkoshi).48

For the buying side, recycle shops are also a cheap source of furniture and appliances. Price benchmarks are in Furnishing on a Budget: Where Used Furniture Lives.

The ID check at the counter (古物営業法)

A shop that buys from you is a 古物商 (kobutsushō, "licensed secondhand dealer") under the 古物営業法 (Kobutsu Eigyō Hō, "Secondhand Articles Dealer Act").1750 When it buys, exchanges, or takes goods on consignment, the law requires it to verify your identity, for example by confirming your address, name, occupation, and age.17 It must also report to the police immediately if it suspects goods are stolen, which is why a seller cannot stay anonymous.17

What the law requires

The law exempts transactions below an amount set by National Public Safety Commission rules. That amount is ¥10,000 (as of 2026-10-10), so the statutory ID check applies to purchases of ¥10,000 and above.1751

Some goods always require the check regardless of amount (as of 2026-10-10):51

  • Motorcycles and mopeds, including parts (generic parts such as screws and bolts excepted)
  • Air-conditioner outdoor units and heat-pump water-heater units
  • Home video-game software
  • CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and other optically recorded sound or video
  • Books
  • Electric wire and metal gratings

What chains require on top

Many chains go further than the law. BOOKOFF requires ID for every item you sell (as of 2026-10-10).19 Hard Off's store buyback requires an official document showing your address and name (as of 2026-10-10).9

2nd Street lists the residence card (在留カード) and the special permanent resident certificate among accepted documents, which must be originals, within validity, and show your name, current address, and date of birth (as of 2026-10-10).18 Hard Off's mail-in buyback also accepts the residence card, but the applicant, pickup, and ID addresses must all match (as of 2026-10-10).10

Treasure Factory's home pickup needs you present with a valid ID whose address matches the visit address. A utility bill from the past 3 months may be accepted as a supplement if it does not (as of 2026-10-10).48

Update your card's address before a buyback

Several chains check that the address on your ID matches your current or pickup address.181048 A residence card that still shows a previous address may fail that check, so as a general precaution, have your new address recorded on the card before booking.

Disposal vs. resale: the cost comparison

Everything you cannot sell or give away has to be disposed of, and for furniture that usually means paying your city.56 That fee is the baseline any resale or giveaway beats.

Sodai gomi fees as the baseline

Large household items go out as 粗大ごみ (sodai gomi, "oversized waste"), collected by appointment for a per-item fee.52 Each municipality sets its own fees and booking process, so the two cities below are examples only.56

Sakai's fees are as of 2026-07-14 and Shinjuku's are effective from 2023-10-01 (confirm current figures with your own municipality's sodai gomi page).56 Disposing of a 3-seat sofa costs ¥2,300 in Shinjuku and ¥1,200 in Sakai (as of the dates above), while giving the same sofa away on Jimoty with a cash handover costs nothing in fees.456

In Shinjuku you book by phone or 24-hour online booking, buy fee tickets at a konbini or ward facility, stick them on, and put the item where agreed at booking (as of 2026-07-01).52 Sakai takes applications by phone or online (as of 2026-07-14).5 The full procedure is covered in Oversized Trash (Sodai Gomi) and the Prepayment Sticker.

The decision for each item runs roughly as follows.45253

Air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines

The 家電リサイクル法 (Kaden Risaikuru Hō, "Home Appliance Recycling Act") covers four household appliance types: air conditioners, TVs (CRT, LCD, and plasma), refrigerators and freezers, and washing machines and clothes dryers (as of 2026-10-10).53 Shinjuku, for example, does not collect any of the four as sodai gomi because they fall under this law (as of 2026-07-01).52

The Act's duty to hand an appliance to a collector or recycler and pay the fees applies when you discharge it as waste; the statute's term is an appliance that "has become waste" (廃棄物となったもの).5455 When you discard one of the four, you pay a recycling fee set by the manufacturer plus a collection and transport fee set by the retailer.5356

The usual disposal routes are the store selling you a replacement, the store where you bought the old unit, your municipality's guidance, or a 指定引取場所 (shitei hikitori basho, "designated collection site") after paying the recycling fee by postal transfer.53 METI's FAQ also treats resale of a used unit as a recognized path for retailers.56 While a unit still works, selling it or giving it away is an alternative to the recycling-fee route, which applies when you dispose of it.5456

Neither Mercari's nor Jimoty's prohibited-items list names appliances or installed air conditioners.5758

Avoid trucks advertising free appliance pickup

METI warns against unlicensed collectors that advertise free pickup by loudspeaker or in vacant lots, citing illegal dumping and fires.5356 Use a retailer, your municipality's route, or a designated collection site instead.

Selling before you leave Japan

A departure sell-off has a fixed end date, so the order matters more than the price. No official source prescribes a countdown; the sequence below is built from the platform rules above.24393

A countdown for offloading belongings

Start with whatever has hard lead times. Mercari re-verification needs a residence card with 60 or more days of validity left and can take up to about 5 days (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current rules with the Mercari Help Center).24 Book recycle-shop home pickups with your fixed move date stated.3

Treasure Factory's combined buyback and moving service can merge the last two physical steps for some households.48 Sodai gomi booking lead times vary by city and are not covered by the sources used here, so check your municipality's page early. Related timelines are in Departure Checklist: The 90-Day Run-Up, Move-Out Notice: The 1-2 Month Standard, and Moving Day Logistics: Movers and the Hikkoshi Industry.

Sayonara sales and expat groups

A "sayonara sale" is a departing resident's sell-off, often run through English-language Facebook groups. The Village House blog described groups such as "Tokyo Sayonara Sales" and "Osaka Sayonara Sales" in 2022, with buyers often meeting at a local station; group names and activity may have changed since.59

Do not move a Mercari buyer to another channel

Mercari prohibits steering a counterparty to outside services or to payment methods other than its own.6061 Do not use Mercari comments or messages to send a buyer to a Facebook group, a cash meeting, or a bank transfer.

Payouts after departure

Withdraw your Mercari proceeds while you still have a Japanese bank account in your own name. Each request costs ¥200 (as of 2026-10-10), and accounts whose holder name is in alphabetic characters cannot receive transfers.39

Unverified proceeds that you leave behind face the 180-day deadline (as of 2026-10-10), up to two automatic transfers at ¥200 each, and then lapse if no account is registered or the amount is ¥200 or less.13 An expired residence card blocks some Mercari functions and all Merpay functions until you re-verify, and an expired card cannot be submitted.24

Mercari's help pages do not say whether overseas bank accounts can receive withdrawals, or what happens to a verified balance after you leave Japan.39 Sequence the withdrawal before the account closure covered in Closing or Maintaining Bank and Brokerage Accounts.

Taxes and resale-as-business limits

Most people selling their own used belongings owe no tax on the proceeds. The exceptions are high-value items and selling as a trade.6263

Personal household goods are generally not taxed

Income from selling 生活用動産 (seikatsuyō dōsan, "movable property for daily living"), such as furniture, household goods, a commuting car, and clothing, is not taxed.62 The National Tax Agency (NTA) states specifically that selling old clothes and household goods through net auctions or flea-market apps is non-taxable.63

The exemption does not cover precious metals, jewels, calligraphy and paintings, antiques, and similar items worth more than ¥300,000 per item or set (as of 2026-04-01; confirm current figures with the National Tax Agency).62 Gains on those can be taxable as 譲渡所得 (jōto shotoku, "capital gains").62

When selling becomes taxable or licensed

Selling other assets, or providing services through such platforms, generally counts as 雑所得 (zatsu shotoku, "miscellaneous income").63 A salaried worker whose year-end adjustment is done must still file a return if other income, such as side income, exceeds ¥200,000.63 Filing mechanics are covered in Crypto and Side Income Tax in Japan: The 200,000-Yen Rule.

Running a 古物営業 (kobutsu eigyō, "secondhand-goods business"), meaning buying used goods to resell, requires a 古物商許可 (kobutsushō kyoka, "secondhand-dealer licence") from the prefectural 公安委員会 (kōan iinkai, "public safety commission").6450 The legal definition excludes a business that only sells, or buys back only from its own customers.64

National Police Agency guidance defines "business" as repeated, continuing trading for profit. Whether trading at recycle shops, flea markets, or online flea-market sites counts is judged case by case; for bazaars and flea markets, the guidance weighs factors such as item prices, how often they are held, buying volume, and use of proceeds.65

The same guidance treats goods acquired for someone's use as 古物, so even unused items that once reached a consumer qualify.65 Whether your own pattern of buying and reselling crosses the line is a question for a 行政書士 (gyōseishoshi, "administrative scrivener") or the prefectural police, not a self-assessment.

Good to know

Scams on marketplace apps

Mercari prohibits asking for or accepting payment outside its system, including direct bank transfer, cash handover, registered cash mail, crypto, cash on delivery, and online gift cards, and gives no support if such a payment goes wrong.60 It also bans steering users to SNS or other sites, citing cases where the buyer paid directly and nothing shipped.61 Jimoty bans bank transfers and outside payment for the same reason (as of 2026-10-10; confirm current rules with Jimoty's help pages).40

Phishing emails and SMS lead to Mercari look-alike sites. Mercari advises not clicking links in messages claiming to be from Mercari and using the official app or a bookmarked URL instead.66

The National Consumer Affairs Center reported in 2025 on buyers receiving suspected fakes and on sellers whose returned item was swapped (すり替え, surikae, "swap") after a counterfeit accusation.67 It advises buyers to ask questions before buying and sellers to use trackable shipping, notes that disputes are in principle settled between the parties, and points to the 188 consumer hotline.67 Related guidance is in Fraud and Scams Targeting Residents and The Consumer Affairs Hotline (188).

Sales-balance and account timing around a residence-card renewal

Mercari accepts only a residence card with 60 or more days of validity left, and rejects cards in renewal processing (as of 2026-10-10).24 Re-verification can take up to about 5 days (as of 2026-10-10), and until it is done, some Mercari functions and all Merpay functions are blocked.24 Re-verify as soon as the renewed card arrives, not on the eve of a sell-off.

Student and Dependent holders who re-verify with a new-format card issued from 2026-06-14 must also send extra documents proving at least 6 months' residence (as of 2026-10-10).23 Mercari notifies affected users of the documents by in-app message.23

Prohibited and restricted items

Mercari prohibits tickets (paper tickets only under conditions; e-tickets not at all), cash and cash equivalents, medicines and medical devices, items that can be used as weapons, and quasi-drugs or cosmetics made or repackaged without permission (as of 2026-10-10).5768

Jimoty prohibits medicines and medical devices, health foods containing pharmaceutical ingredients, firearms and swords (including blades over 6 cm), items usable as weapons, and event tickets judged to be for resale or profit, and restricts live animals (as of 2026-10-10).58

Yahoo!フリマ prohibits gift certificates and stamps, cash and cards, infringing goods, tickets judged acquired for resale, tobacco, medicines, and adult products (as of 2026-10-10).69 Listing an item you do not have, and paying outside its own payment system, are also banned.69

Yahoo! Flea Market as an alternative

Yahoo!フリマ (Yahoo! Flea Market), run by LY Corporation, charges a 5% seller fee including tax, listed as its standard fee as of 2026-10-10.1670 The fee is fixed when the buyer gives a receipt rating, or around noon 15 days after purchase.16

A new-seller program launched on 2026-05-19: someone with no listing history who sells 3 or more items within 30 days of their first listing pays no seller fee for the next 90 days, on up to 50 items (as of 2026-10-10).7170 The first 3 qualifying sales are still charged 5%.71

Proceeds can be charged to PayPay or withdrawn to a bank. Withdrawal to PayPay Bank is free and other banks cost ¥100 per request, against Mercari's ¥200 at any bank (as of 2026-10-10).3972 Proceeds can be held until the last day of the month in which 5 months have passed since receipt (as of 2026-10-10).72

Large-item handover in apartments

When a buyer collects furniture from an apartment, Jimoty's advice applies: have a companion present, avoid closed-room handovers, and place the item outside your entrance beforehand.4445

For items going out as sodai gomi instead, place them where agreed at booking; in Shinjuku, for apartments, that can be an area such as the ground-floor exit (as of 2026-07-01).52 Your building and city may set different rules.
