Home fiber means a 光回線 (hikari kaisen, "fiber-optic line") run to the building or unit, with an ISP carrying traffic over it. Some carriers bundle line and ISP in one contract; others sell the NTT fiber wholesale to retail ISPs under the 光コラボ (hikari korabo, "hikari collaboration") model.²³⁴

The Major Fiber Providers

The market splits into two network families. All headline speeds are technical-maximum, best-effort values. Actual speeds run lower depending on wiring, equipment, and congestion, a point every carrier states in its own terms.²³

NURO Hikari

NURO Hikari is operated by Sony Network Communications (So-net) on its own network, separate from NTT wholesale.⁶ The standard tier advertises up to 2.5Gbps downstream (network-to-terminal maximum), with a 10Gbps tier for heavier use (as of 2026-09-06; confirm current figures with NURO).⁶

Entry monthly pricing starts from ¥2,980 for mansion types and ¥3,980 for detached houses on discounted plans, plus a ¥550/month home-gateway fee (as of 2026-09).⁶ Coverage is limited to selected prefectures across Hokkaido, Kanto, Tokai, Kansai, Chugoku, and parts of Kyushu, with Tohoku served at 10G only (as of 2026-09-06).⁶

NURO's footprint is the narrowest of the major options. Check the address on NURO's site before comparing its prices against nationwide alternatives.⁶

docomo Hikari

docomo Hikari is a provider-integrated service on NTT Flet's lines, with DOCOMO supplying OCN インターネット (OCN Internet, "DOCOMO's own ISP") and other ISPs selectable.²⁸ The 1Giga plan starts from ¥4,400/month for mansion types and ¥5,720/month for detached houses, while 10Giga starts from ¥6,380 for both (as of 2026-09-06).²

The fixed-term plan runs two years with auto-renewal. Cancelling outside the renewal window costs ¥5,500 for houses or ¥4,180 for mansions (as of 2026-09-06).² The application follows three steps: an area search via NTT East or West, the application itself, then installation work after a start-of-use notice.²

Phone support in English, Portuguese, Chinese, and Spanish is available for hikari inquiries.² That makes the application path workable for residents with limited Japanese.

au Hikari

au Hikari runs on KDDI's own fiber network and sells internet with optional phone and TV over a single fiber line.⁷ Plans split into Home for detached houses and Mansion for apartment complexes, with detail rates published on Japanese-only charge pages.⁹

Phone service adds ¥550/month to the internet fee, and TV service adds ¥550/month plus set-top-box rental (as of 2026-09-06).⁹ Third-party 2026 comparisons cite mansion pricing near ¥3,740/month, though practitioner sources describe these figures inconsistently across building types (as of 2026-06).⁵

Coverage expands over time but remains partial, so availability needs a per-region and per-building check.⁷ Paired au mobile lines earn calling-charge and bundle advantages.⁷

SoftBank Hikari

SoftBank Hikari is SoftBank's ISP retail on NTT fiber, and its transfer rules treat Flet's and other collabo users (docomo Hikari, OCN, BIGLOBE) as no-construction transfers.³ The 1Giga two-year plan costs ¥4,180/month for mansions and ¥5,720/month for houses; 10Giga costs ¥6,380 for either type (as of 2026-09-06).³

A +¥330/month revision to existing 1Giga plans takes effect on 2026-12-01 (as of 2026-09-06).³ New-installation construction fees for applications from 2026-06-01 are ¥47,520 lump sum (or ¥1,980 x 24) with an on-site visit, and ¥5,280 without a visit; transfer customers pay ¥0 (as of 2026-09-06).³

The contract renews automatically every two years. Cancelling outside the expiry month plus the two following months incurs a fee equal to one month's undiscounted charge (as of 2026-09-06).³

SoftBank bundle savings land on the mobile bill

The Ouchi Wari discount cuts the paired mobile bill by up to ¥1,100/month for SoftBank lines or up to ¥1,650/month for Y!mobile lines, and requires a ¥550/month option pack (as of 2026-09-06).³ The fiber bill itself does not shrink.

Regional and Cable Options

BIGLOBE Hikari and OCN-based services are collabo retailers on NTT Flet's lines; SoftBank's own transfer list names both alongside docomo Hikari as collabo sources.³⁸ OCN now positions OCN Internet as its docomo-Hikari-compatible provider, while legacy standalone OCN Hikari products are closed to new applications.⁸

J:COM NET bundles line and provider, so no separate ISP contract is needed, and sells both fiber (1G and 10G) and cable courses with TV bundling.⁴ Promoted campaign pricing for the 10G fiber course runs below standard levels for the first months, with post-campaign levels around ¥5,258 for 1G with Wi-Fi and ¥6,160–6,886 for 10G depending on course (as of 2026-09-06).⁴

Installation Timing: Wired Versus Unwired Homes

Whether setup takes days or weeks depends on one fact: is fiber already wired into the unit. Where it is, activation can be a no-visit procedure, including transfer paths at ¥0 and no-visit tiers around ¥5,280 (as of 2026-09-06; confirm current figures with the carrier).⁶³

Where new in-home wiring is needed, a technician visit of about an hour is standard, and scheduling typically takes one to three weeks in the general market (as of 2026-09-06).³¹⁰ NURO runs longer: around one to two months for houses and one to three months for mansions outside the fastest building type (as of 2026-09-06).⁶

The application path looks like this:

Have the exact building and unit name, a reachable Japanese phone number, ID such as the 在留カード (zairyū kādo, "residence card"), a payment method, and landlord or building permission where wiring work is involved.¹¹⁰ Timing extras such as weekend work (around ¥3,300 at SoftBank) or evening and late-night visits (up to ¥13,926 and ¥27,852 respectively for recent applications) add cost as well as scheduling (as of 2026-09-06).³

Apply early and keep a backup connection for the gap

A new-wiring appointment can land weeks after move-in. Arrange a mobile or pocket-WiFi fallback so work and messaging survive the wait.¹⁰

Check availability at your exact address before comparing plans

Coverage is an address-level fact, not a city-level one. NURO serves only selected prefectures, au describes expanding but partial coverage, and NTT-based collabo options transfer across the Flet's footprint; even inside a covered region, building equipment decides mansion-type eligibility.⁶⁷³ Run each carrier's address checker with the exact building name before shortlisting.

Bundle discounts only apply with the matching mobile contract

Discounts such as docomo's up-to-¥1,210 or SoftBank's up-to-¥1,100/¥1,650 come off the paired mobile bill and require the matching carrier plus, at SoftBank, a ¥550/month option pack (as of 2026-09-06).²³ A household on a mismatched carrier, or one that skips the required options, earns nothing from the bundle.

Same-day activation only happens where in-unit fiber already exists

No-visit and transfer paths exist only where fiber already reaches the unit. New wiring needs a technician visit and a one-to-three-week window in the general case, longer on NURO's network (as of 2026-09-06).⁶³¹⁰ Ask the landlord or agent whether the unit is already wired, and file the application as soon as the address is fixed.
