Foreign-Resident Garbage Mistakes in Japan

Japan trash mistakes foreigners make in the first months are almost always the same six patterns, and each one ends the same way with a bag or item left uncollected at the station.1 The fix is equally repeatable once you know which local rule you broke.2

Overview

Japan has no national sorting rule. Each municipality runs its own waste system, so category names, bags, and collection days for the same item differ between cities and even between wards.13 This article covers six recurring new-arrival mistakes and the four tools that prevent repeats: the ward-office multilingual guide, the building notice-board, a quick question to a neighbor, and the municipality schedule and category app.45

Sorting mistakes that get bags rejected

A bag with mixed categories is tagged and left uncollected. Take it back inside, re-sort it, and put it out on the next correct collection day.12 Yokohama leaves improperly disposed garbage in place with a warning sticker, and repeat offenders who ignore warnings face a 2,000 JPY fine (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the City of Yokohama).2

The 燃えるごみ (moeru gomi, "burnable garbage") stream takes kitchen waste and soiled paper, while 燃えないごみ (moenai gomi, "non-burnable garbage") covers ceramics, glass, and small metal items in most cities.6 Recyclables form their own streams with preparation rules, which is where newcomers stumble.6

Plastic packaging mixed into burnable

Plastic food trays, wrappers, and containers carrying the プラ mark belong to the plastic-packaging stream in municipalities that collect it, not to burnable garbage.6 Yokohama collects items under 50 cm made entirely of plastic as プラスチック資源 (purasuchikku shigen, "plastic resources"), while Shinjuku collects plastic containers and packaging plus qualifying plastic products as recyclable resources on the weekly recyclables day (as of 2026-09).67

Treating all soft plastic as burnable is the classic first mistake because the handling of plastics varies more by municipality than any other stream.13 Yokohama excludes contaminated items that hinder recycling, thick hard items such as cutting boards, items 50 cm or more, and products mixing plastic with other materials from plastic resources.6

Glass bottles put in non-burnable where a separate category exists

In Yokohama, cans and glass bottles that held food or drink form a cans, glass-bottles, and PET stream separate from non-burnable garbage.6 The びん・かん (bin/kan, "glass bottles and cans") stream is emptied, rinsed containers only.6 Cosmetic and medicine bottles, excluding oral medicines, go to non-burnable instead.6

Shinjuku collects metal, ceramic, and glass garbage twice a month on a 1st-and-3rd or 2nd-and-4th weekday pattern by district. Dropping a glass bottle into non-burnable where a separate bottles and cans day exists produces a rejected bag.81

Food-soiled plastic placed in recyclables without rinsing

Yokohama requires rinsing and wiping food stains and dirt off plastic resources before disposal, and it excludes food scraps and contaminated items that hinder recycling.6 Cans, glass bottles, and ペットボトル (petto botoru, "PET bottles") must be rinsed out as well.6 Shinjuku excludes containers with residual contents and extremely dirty items from recyclables collection.7

Heavily soiled plastic that cannot be rinsed clean is treated as burnable instead of recyclable.13 Resident guides list unrinsed recyclables among the standard rejection causes, which matches the municipal rinse rules above.13

Heavily soiled plastic belongs in burnable, not the sink marathon

If a container still looks dirty after one quick rinse, stop scrubbing and put it in burnable. One downgraded item keeps the whole recyclables bag collectable.13

Timing and place mistakes at the garbage station

Yokohama requires sorted garbage at the designated collection site by 8 a.m., prohibits leaving anything out the night before or after collection, and sets collection days by area.2 Check the sticker at your collection site or ask someone in your neighborhood for your area's days.2

Trash put out the night before where prohibited

Yokohama prohibits putting garbage out the night before collection.2 Shinjuku requires recyclables and garbage at the collection point by 8 a.m. on collection day.8 Overnight bags attract crows and cats, which is why the morning rule exists.3

Night-before put-out is described as the most common neighbor complaint against foreign residents.31 In many buildings the morning-only rule is explicitly posted, so the building notice-board settles the question faster than the city website.5

Trash left at a different building's station

Garbage must go to your assigned or designated collection point, not a convenient pile elsewhere.21 Using a different building's garbage area is listed as a standard foreign-renter mistake.5

Buildings add their own layer on top of city rules. Some have 24-hour garbage rooms, others allow garbage only in set hours, and small buildings may use a shared neighborhood point.5 Confirm your building's spot and hours at or before move-in.5

Building rules outrank city rules for daily use

The city sets the categories and days, but your building sets the spot, the hours, and often the net. When the two seem to conflict, follow the building's posted instructions and ask the manager.5

Oversized items put out without a booking and prepayment sticker

Items over the size threshold are 粗大ごみ (sodai gomi, "oversized garbage") and are never collected on normal days.9 Yokohama defines the line as metal items with the longest side 30 cm or more, and all other items such as plastic or wood with the longest side 50 cm or more.96

Oversized collection requires advance application by phone or online, and in Yokohama it takes around 2 weeks from application to collection (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with the City of Yokohama).9 Per-item fees run roughly a few hundred to several thousand yen depending on item and city (as of 2026-09).13

StepWhat to doNotes
ApplyContact the oversized-garbage center by phone or onlineAround 2 weeks lead time in Yokohama 9
PayBuy the handling sticker at a designated bank, post office, or convenience store7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson sell them in Yokohama 9
AttachWrite your name on the sticker and fix it where collectors can see itA code or initials works by prior arrangement 9
Put outLeave the item at the specified place by 8 a.m. on collection dayCollected on rainy days too 9

The applicant is told the collection date, place, and handling fee at booking time.9 The 粗大ごみ処理券 (sodai gomi shoriken, "oversized-garbage handling sticker") is proof of payment, so an item without one is left in place.91 Leaving oversized items in the normal garbage area without booking can bring complaints or extra charges from the building.15

The booking flow above is the shape almost every municipality follows, with local differences in thresholds, lead times, and sticker denominations.1

Four home appliances never go through oversized pickup

Air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators and freezers, and washing machines and clothes dryers fall under the Home Appliance Recycling Law. Arrange disposal through a retailer or designated route and pay the recycling plus transport fees; leaving one at the collection point counts as illegal dumping.1011

How to stay on track from week one

Four habits cover nearly every mistake in this article. Each one takes a few minutes at move-in and pays off every collection day after.13

Pick up the ward-office multilingual sorting guide

Shinjuku City Office distributes recyclable and garbage sorting guides in multiple languages.4 Yokohama publishes sorting pamphlets in 6 languages and leaflets in 10 languages, available at ward offices.6 Ask for the multilingual version at the residents' counter when you register your address.13

Read the building notice-board before the city website

Building rules on garbage-room hours, collection-point location, net use, and English instructions sit on top of city rules and matter more day to day.5 Many apartments post sorting rules by the bins, sometimes in Japanese and English.35 Photograph the posted sheet so you can look up unknown words later.5

Ask a neighbor when the guide is unclear

Yokohama's own rules page tells residents to check the sticker at the collection site or ask someone in the neighborhood for their area's collection days.2 Brief clarifying questions to a building manager or neighbor are normal and expected.5 If you receive a warning, ask which rule was broken and where the instructions are rather than guessing again.5

Install the municipality schedule and category app

Shinjuku offers a recyclables and garbage sorting app covering separation and area collection days.4 Yokohama offers the Mictionary item-lookup tool on PC and smartphone in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean, plus a garbage-sorting app in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean.6 Type the item name, get the stream and the day, and set the reminder.64

Good to know

Rules change when you move wards, not just prefectures

Sorting categories and collection days vary by municipality, so a move across wards triggers a fresh check of the new ward's calendar, bags, and station.15 Shinjuku's frequencies below are one ward's example, not a national pattern (as of 2026-09; confirm current figures with Shinjuku City).8

StreamShinjuku frequencyNotes
Combustible garbageTwice a weekSundays and year-end excluded; holidays collected 8
Recyclables including plasticsOnce a weekPlastic expansion did not change the schedule 7
Metal, ceramic, and glassTwice a month1st-and-3rd or 2nd-and-4th weekday by district 8

A rejected bag comes back inside until the next correct day

A stickered bag is not collected. Take it back inside, fix the sort or the bag, and put it out on the next correct collection day.13 Leaving it in place turns a small mistake into a neighborhood dispute.3 Yokohama fines repeat sorting violators 2,000 JPY after warnings (as of 2026-09).2

Four home appliances never go through sodai gomi

Air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators and freezers, and washing machines and clothes dryers fall under the Home Appliance Recycling Law: retailers collect from consumers, manufacturers recycle, and consumers pay collection and transport plus recycling fees.1011 The recycling fee is set by the manufacturer and the collection and transport fee by the hauler or retailer, so no fixed sticker amount covers them.11 Mistakes here are forgiven when the household is visibly making an effort, which is exactly what asking early signals.5
