JLPT N3 Mock Tests and Practice Materials

JLPT N3 mock tests are full-length, exam-shaped practice papers that N3 candidates take under timed conditions to rehearse the real test. Knowing which materials actually exist, and how each is labeled, saves you from chasing past papers that the JLPT never releases.

Overview: What "Mock Test" Means at N3

An N3 candidate has usually finished a study base and wants something that looks and feels like the real exam. The catch is that common search terms, "past papers," "sample questions," and "mock test," point to three different things. Only some of them exist for the JLPT.

This article inventories the materials. The protocol for taking a mock test, scoring it, and drilling the gaps lives in How to Take a JLPT Mock Test Properly, so it is not repeated here.

Mock tests vs sample questions vs past papers

Three terms often get conflated, and the difference determines what a learner can actually take.

Sample questions (公式サンプル) are the official free set on jlpt.jp. The set shows one item per item type for each level, so the question count differs from a real booklet. It is a format preview, not a full-length paper.12

The Official Practice Workbook (公式問題集) is a paid book that, for each level, contains close to the same number of questions as an actual test, drawn from items used since the 2010 test revision.3

Past papers (過去問) are complete, previously administered exam booklets. For the JLPT, these are not publicly released.3

So in N3 prep, "mock test" or 模擬試験 usually means one of two things: the Official Practice Workbook used end-to-end under timed conditions, or a commercial or third-party reconstructed full-length test. No official past papers exist to take.3

Search for the right word: 模擬試験, not 過去問

模擬試験 (mogi shiken) is the standard term for a practice or mock exam. 過去問 (kakomon) means past exam papers. The distinction matters because learners search for 過去問 that, for the JLPT, do not exist as public releases.3

What the JLPT does and does not release

The JLPT does not publicly release full past exam papers. The official site offers only two relevant materials: the free sample-question set and the paid Official Practice Workbook. Neither is a complete past paper.13

The issuers describe the Official Practice Workbook as containing, for all levels, almost the same number of questions as an actual test, with questions selected from those used since the 2010 revision. It is the closest official approximation to a real paper, not an archive of past exams.3

One persistent misconception deserves a direct correction. 官報 (Kanpō) is the official gazette of the Japanese government, issued under the Cabinet Office (内閣府). It carries laws, cabinet and ministerial orders, rules, and public notices to inform the public.4

官報 is not a JLPT past-paper source

Any guidance that points to 官報 (Kanpō) for JLPT past papers is wrong. The gazette is the government's legal-notices publication and contains no exam papers. A learner sent there for N3 past papers has been sent to the wrong document entirely.4

Where to Find N3 Practice Materials

N3 practice material falls into three main tiers: free official, paid official, and commercial study series. A fourth, unofficial bucket of online reconstructions sits below all three.

Free official: jlpt.jp sample questions

The sample-question set is issued by the Japan Foundation and JEES, the two bodies that operate the official JLPT website.5 It is free and covers all five levels, including N3.12

The format is one sample question per item type. It previews every question format, but it is not a full-length test. The number of questions differs from a real booklet.12

For listening, the site provides one sample question with an audio file for each item type. The download bundle includes PDFs, listening MP3s, answer sheets, scripts, and answer keys.2

The official site also warns that there may be differences from the questions in the actual test booklet.1

The Official Practice Workbook is issued by the Japan Foundation and JEES and published by Bonjinsha (凡人社).3 There are two editions: the original 2012 volume and Vol. 2 in 2018. Each covers all five levels, including N3.3

Each volume contains, for each level, almost the same number of questions as an actual test. The items are selected from those used since the 2010 test revision.3

This is the closest official stand-in for a full paper. You can use each edition as one format-faithful timed rehearsal. But each holds only about one test's worth of questions per level, so it is a finite resource, not an endless bank.3

Spend the workbook deliberately, not all at once

With only about one test's worth of questions per edition, and two editions in total, the Official Practice Workbook is finite. Reserve it for the moments when you want the most faithful rehearsal. Do not burn both editions early in a prep cycle.3

Commercial series: Shin Kanzen Master, So-matome, TRY!

The best-known N3 commercial materials are study series split by skill, not stand-alone mock papers. The table summarizes each tier and what it offers.

新完全マスター (Shin Kanzen Master) is published by 3A Corporation, also known as 3A Network (スリーエーネットワーク). It is sold as separate N3 volumes by skill: 文法 (grammar), 語彙 (vocabulary), 読解 (reading), and 聴解 (listening comprehension).6

The grammar volume is structured as a problem introduction, a practical skill-building section with three problem types, and two mock-test sets at the end. It is a study and section series, not a pure mock-test product. Still, individual volumes do include mock sets.7

日本語総まとめ (Nihongo So-matome) is published by ASK Publishing (アスク出版). N3 is issued as skill-split volumes: 文法 (grammar), 語彙 (vocabulary), 漢字 (kanji), 読解 (reading), and 聴解 (listening comprehension).8

The revised edition added mock tests, review questions, detailed explanations, translations of example sentences, and downloadable audio. It is a paced, coverage-oriented study series, not a dedicated mock book.8

TRY! N3 is published by ASK Publishing (アスク出版). It is a grammar-driven integrated text. The N3 volume builds around N3 sentence structures and presents them through varied text types such as blogs, notices, recipes, conversations, and interview dialogue.9

All three are grammar-from-context or section study series, not mock-test products. In practice, match a series to a weak section. Reserve the Official Practice Workbook for the most format-faithful full rehearsal.368

Third-party online mocks

Free reconstructed full-length N3 tests circulate online. They are unofficial third-party reconstructions whose accuracy is unverified, and no specific site can be sourced to an authority for endorsement.

The authoritative point is the contrast: the official channels are the free sample set and the paid Official Practice Workbook. Anything full-length and free online is necessarily unofficial.13

Treat free online full-length mocks as unverified

Reconstructed N3 mocks online can add volume to your practice, but their accuracy and difficulty calibration are unconfirmed. For anything you treat as authoritative, rely on the official sample set and the Official Practice Workbook.13

How to Use N3 Mock Tests

A mock is only as useful as what you do with the result. The full protocol is in a companion article. What follows is the N3-specific layer on top of it.

The method lives in the companion article

The cycle of taking a test under timed conditions, scoring it, then reviewing and drilling the gaps is covered in How to Take a JLPT Mock Test Properly. This article defers to it and does not re-teach the protocol.

N3-specific notes

The Official Practice Workbook is the most format-faithful material to rehearse with, because its question counts and types approximate a real N3 paper since the 2010 revision. Use it when you want the closest thing to real timing and section shape.3

Because the workbook is finite, about one test's worth per edition across two editions, spend it deliberately. Do not burn both editions early in a prep cycle.3

For everything else, match a weak section to a section-specific series. Use Shin Kanzen Master N3 for depth in a single skill such as 読解 (reading) or 聴解 (listening comprehension), and So-matome N3 for paced, broad coverage across skills.68

Good to know

過去問 vs 模擬試験: naming the thing you are looking for

過去問 (kakomon) means past exam papers. 模擬試験 (mogi shiken) means a mock or practice exam. For the JLPT, public 過去問 do not exist. What a learner can actually take is 模擬試験 material: the Official Practice Workbook or third-party reconstructions.13

Treating 官報 as a JLPT past-paper source

官報 (Kanpō) is the government's official gazette. It carries laws, orders, and public notices, and is issued under the Cabinet Office. It has no connection to JLPT exam papers. Pointing a learner to 官報 for N3 past papers sends them to the wrong document entirely.4

Treating the free sample questions as a full mock

The official free sample set gives one item per item type, with a question count that differs from a real booklet. It previews the format but cannot stand in for a full-length timed paper. Treat it as a format primer, not a mock.12

"I failed mocks before I passed the real test"

Some candidates score below passing on mocks yet pass the actual exam. The reverse also happens. A mock score is a diagnostic that shows where to drill, not a verdict on the real result. Read a low mock as a map of weak sections, not a prediction.
